Review LEGO Elves Azari's Magic Fire Polybag
Vorkosigan replied to brickpreviews's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I plan to pick up one or two Elves sets for the parts so I'll be glad to get this polybag thrown in. I'm strangely excited about the presence of red apples. -
It makes sense to me that they would update the printing and even create back printing just to make a unique figure with nostalgic value but not an exact reproduction. Its nice to think it could be for a Futuron revival but it doesn't seem that probable.

Beautiful! Like the use of the 1x1 with spike for a shield, did a double take on that one. Overall just really detailed.
-
Nice build, I like the big vehicle and the interesting snow speeder bike. Cool technique with the railing in the base.
-
This is my first attempt at a train MOC. Its not as detailed as many, but I tried to put in some good play features. This is built largely on 60052, 60036, and 60035. This glass bottom observation platform slides in and out. A place to rest and unwind (but only in shifts). The crane also reaches the hopper when the cars are in sequence.

The swamp police helicopter polybag and friends smoothie cart polybag are 50% off at Target in the Valentine's section. My local store had quite a few left this morning.

I'm not a fan of either of those themes, but I'm not sure why you guys assume that sort of super theme would be a bad thing. I mean chima does have a lot of cool parts and detailed figures. There doesn't have to be mechs and tanks just because there is a tie in tv show. Think, game of thrones for kids. Lots of competing factions and intrigue. Whether the next theme is fantasy based or all humans, I would mainly like to see more factions with different colors, figure styles, and architectural styles.
-
But what if this is not exactly Castle, but a new medieval fantasy theme with the scope of Ninjago and Chima, and associated TV tie in. Both of those themes started in January.

The heavy haul train isn't what I hoped for, but it has some good elements. I don't have the yellow cargo train so I don't mind a similar engine in red. The hopper is cool, it would have been nice to see 2 hoppers so it tied together well with the backhoe. Another helicopter is the main downside. Actually if it was in octan colors and logos that would make it a bit more interesting, I don't know why they made it so close but not quite. I had hoped the train would be transporting some large structure that could be assembled, like a wind turbine or small bridge.

Why doesn't Castle have its own section of Eurobricks?
Vorkosigan replied to thetang22's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I don't see that its a problem practically speaking. And despite being a "classic" theme, Castle is definitely 2nd or even 3rd rate in terms of current popularity. It doesn't have a line every year, and the last line in 2013 had only 5 real sets plus a couple battle packs. Now hopefully there is a more expansive Castle theme in 2016 and it regains some popularity. I still think we'll be ok with just the historic forum. -
The financial failure of the Lone Ranger movie and then subsequent financial failure of the Lego tie in line suggests to me that it is very unlikely to see a full Wild West theme. I just don't think it is popular subject matter with today's youth. The CMF figures and TLM tie in sets are a way to provide some western subject matter to the market without committing to a theme.

Go back and take a picture.

Yea the big sub from the 97 divers had the nice feature of opening in the back and a computer for a second minifig to use for research. The computer with a picture of a fish on it always cracks me up.

Based on this shot from the youtube posted a couple pages ago, there is nothing back there for minifigs. There are the storage containers on the sides, and then it narrows down and is just engine structure. I think at most there might be a little storage for diving equipment behind the operator.

Since language was invented people have been complaining how things used to be better in the old days. If anything this is a golden age, look at the variety and many amazing large sets. There have been other previous golden ages that you may prefer, that doesn't change that this is a good time. There are still high quality small sets as well. Not everything will be mind blowing when a company makes so many products. I think most people's complaining stems from burn out on the hobby. You gotta know when to take a break.

It won't be made as is, but I think there is a chance it would be modified into a sort of medieval modular. Perhaps like the helicarrier it won't get approved but a set along similar lines will be made at a smaller scale.

I'm glad to see sea animals in every divers set, but I was kinda hoping for a return of the manta ray from 6442. One thing I would've liked to see in the arctic sets is more polar bears, or penguins for the small sets.

Modulo I get the leaps that technology has made. I have experience with 3D printing and running a CNC. While 3D printing is great for hobbyists and engineering, I think it is a long long way from being competitive with buying a set off the shelf. You know the old joke "If cars had developed like computers we could buy a $25 car that got 1000 miles to the gallon"? I think 3D printers are closer to cars than computers, because the hard aspects are more of a materials problem than an electronic or software one. More people will own 3D printers, but just like people don't regularly print their own books just because they have a laser printer, average consumers won't be printing full LEGO sets any time soon.

I don't know that 3D printing will ever be that easy. Think of all the spools of wire you'd need for the colors, or some kind of sophisticated process to dye the plastic as its injected. Without a revolutionary technology leap I don't think printing a real set will be cheap or simple enough for anybody but the most die hard hobbyists.

All the subs, I'll take all you got. My order of preference: 1) An underwater base 2) A large sub, like a $100 set with a detailed interior 3) A coastal / island base, although coast guard has had variations on this already Though if there is a TRU exclusive or something, maybe it will be a small base...

Well the Divers theme from the 90s had yellow subs with red and black figures. The main difference is these have more black than red. I want to see higher resolution pictures of these sets before I judge this.

I used to restore and tune 70s mopeds (real mopeds with pedals, not scooters). I did a lot of fabricating custom parts as I got more into it. Had upwards of 15 mopeds at once at the peak, only have one left at this point. Bought stuff at yard sales and auctions and sold it on ebay, mainly vintage technology: film cameras, projectors and films, reel to reels, sewing machines, commodore 64 stuff, etc. As part of this I collect, restore, and use Polaroid cameras. This hobby is also winding down at the moment. Photography in general, although this fits in well with LEGO as it gives me something to take pictures of.

Already release creator set: http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Red-Creatures-31032?fromListing=listing Ship, and sunken ship, and small sub seems like a big set for $80. It looks like it might actually include a baseplate?! Very interesting set for me. I wish there was a picture of the sub on the right edge of this picture, it looks like it might be the biggest sub ($25 set). Helicopters must sell but I'm sick of them. Why not give us a big sub instead? Nice colors but too similar to the multiple police Chinooks from the last few years. If it comes with that sub below it I will have to get it though.
