^ I see, well I believe that technic bricks contributr to the cost a lot. Well... perhaps my 'cost saving' strategy would not save that much in the end :) Anyway, I'm not about to build anything this bis - that's just completely out of my budget range.
-
^ I meant the grille slopes in general, I basically just seconded what Chupacabra said - that it looks to big for what it represents. But I think it's better than not having that veature so... no better solution in my mind :)

$900 and 25 orders... well wow. I admire your dedication, yet thinking, wouldn't it be beneficial to spend some time re-designing the model in order to avoid some rare or hard to find parts? Given that this design is quite old already, I'm sure there would be even better (simpler/sturdier/better looking) solutions if newer parts were used. With all the respect to Cavegod's design, I think an update would make such model much more build-friendly.

I like the panels eventhough I agree that these grille accents are to excessive. I really like all these rabbets that are showing on render but my concern is, will this feature be distinct enough in real? Your render hide all the other seam lines which makes for very beautiful, yet not very real look. Otherwise the detailing is wonderful. That indentation on the bottom is especially lovely. By the way are you going to match the different horizontal sloping angle for the center and front/back panels? The one that makes for incresing the step towards the top? Anyway, I hope you start building real soon :)

[LPub3D] Step Number for Callout step
Kristof replied to Kristof's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
^Thanks for tip. Jeeez... That forum couldn't be more inconvenient :/ -
Hello, I have recently started with LDCad and LPub3d in order to get some instructions done. So far everything works out quite well for me except one thing: When I use callout inbetween the standard steps, I can't manage to get the step number (should be no. 7 on the image bellow) to it. The individual steps within the callout are numbered but that big number for whole step is missing, which is unfortunate. Any idea how fo fix this? Thanks!

^Hi, thanks! As I just said several posts above and explained earlier(I guess I should make some announcement in leading post - I know it's inconvinient to read all the replies), partlists are yet incomplete. I'm working on building the models in LDraw software and im about 10% through now. As soon as I complete these, I'll let you know regarding these part lists ;) (I have the initial LDD files which can provide part lists but both models changed a lot since I stopped making the updates to those files, and multiple parts aren't available in LDD)

(WIP LDD MOC) How 75098 should have been
Kristof replied to YellowCorvette's topic in LEGO Star Wars
'How . . . should have been' - well that's a bold title. Perhaps to much on a bigheaded side really. Except of the nice shape created by these round bricks, I don't see anything to groundbreaking or super fancy on your design, which is not that original anyway: Random find on MocPages (http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/421621) Anyway, the color scheme is not movie-accurate. There is nothing like thick dark stripe in the middle. The connections between discs should have smaller diameter (more like on the image above). Your internal structure is very brick-wasting. Such design would not be suitable for the set element. And since you don't include 'weird play feature', you can make this rigid with using way less bricks in more clever way. In the end, the only positive is the size and yet, you know that TLG designers deal with restrictions there. If you called this just your Hoth MOC, I wouldn't bring up this critique (would probably give you heads up and best wishes for your progress) but you apparently try to line up how some set 'should have been', which means you have to measure your creatinon with the same or higher standards (and I wouldn't even claim to know all the criteria)! -
^ Yes, I'm also tempted to get more of these :D It's not that expensive and I'm sure some of you guys easily could (it's like one bricklinked UCS MF would easily give for 6+ of these :D ) but surely enough expensive for me (even building one required some self persuasion. Anyway, Munificent - yes. That was actually the initial plan making most of the Coruscant battle spaceships in the same scale (I even have crazy plan to make scaled Lucrehulk-class but that's 15k piece estimate - need to discover a gold vein on my backyard... speaking of which, I need to get my backyard first - anyway, long way to go). I have LDD scatches for both Munificent and Recusant but sp far they lack the perfection (that sounds puffy right? :D ) I managed to achieve with Venator and Invisible Hand. But I'll surely get back to them. Now focusing on the instructions.

Hi, well I was obtaining bricks for both of the ships simultaneously but I don't think it would be any easier if I were focusing on just the Venator. All in all, I had about 600 bricks to start in my collection. The rest I had to hunt down on BrickLink (7 orders) and Lego B&P (1 order). It could have been a bit easier If I accepted 'used' parts which I didn't want to. Also on Bricklink, I only chose stores from mid europe to minimize the delivery time. Time is not my best friend here, haha. But I started workin on MLCad model so I'll have a partlist soon. I'll probably offer it along with instructions though, I better not let you buy parts before it's sure that you will have the instructions eventually :D At least I'm motivated to hurry up with the instructions. Thank you, I hope I can make them available for you in some reasonable time. Anio's model (based on Thire5 original masterpiece - I always make sure to mention that ;) ) is of course whole another league, but... at least four times more expensive, stationary and like you say, harder to display unless you have generous amount of shelving space. Anyway, I hope this one will fulfill your expectations ;) For anyone - I Finally got myself a better camera so I can take some better pictures. Should find some time for it this weekend.

^Don't you think it's recession of the UCS trademark? Nothing against bigger playsets though - Death Star was also just massive playset, still it was clearly standing out. So was the Hellicarrier (which could in my opinion deserve the UCS label better than this). People call this Hoth mashup a superpack and I think that's justified comparison. You mention Christmas shopping parents but do you really think they will be grabbing this set? I mean, even if I had to spend that budget for lego gifts for a child, I'd much rather grab several smaller sets (more boxes - check, more diversity - check, more exciting building experience - check). Plus I think that most of todays children would prefer some rebels/clone wars/new trilogy stuff anway.
-
Yep, that's exactly why this message to TLG is important - they tried something (collectorish-playset-like-heavy-pricetag-mishmash) and now they need to know it's not what we would really like :) But I think it's more eye striking with this Hoth set. Batcave is quite solitare (thus unique) in terms of theme, minifigs and also the execution (at least I don't recall similarly looking set).
-
Thank you for bringing up some reasonable feelings. I can understand your point, still I think it's minority approach. If you intended to buy retired sets on the aftermarket, then this really is a blessing for you. But from wide perspective, I don't think there would be many like you (even hundreds doesn't equal many regarding worldwide sales measure). I may also like certain aspects of that set, the blast doors are quite nice and if it was part of classic $100 playset, I can imagine there would be zero complaint, But here again, nothing that would sit me donw and desire for it, like UCS sets usually do. The same goes for shield generator - c'mon, it's very nice but few bricks afterall. People have been MOCing similar things ever since these curved bricks came out. Justifying the price from PPP point is a bit odd here. I think every set over $200 need to offer similar PPP anyway, along with some extra design/exclusivity/wowness value. How about some exclusive bricks? Except minifigs, I don't really see any. Thus I'm quite confident that you could buy most of these bricks on BL for much lower price. Exactly! Haha, well that's obvious. But in fact, I can pretty much imagine buying this on 50% discount ;) Although that is insecure to happen - I can imagine LEGO lowering the production load on this set with all this feedback so in the end, this may become pretty rare. But these are just uneducated guesses :D

Riding the mainstream hype of negative reactions is popular nowdays, that's true. But so is going against mainstream, just for the purpose. And unlike most people to joint the mainstream thoughts, these counter acting individuals have no real arguments to back up their opinions. I'd be really (no irony) interested in hearing some reason why anyone think this is a good set (with all its aspects including price point) in geneal perspective (not just 'this is cool set because I like such sets and it's a must buy for me'). I am not happy when I complain about anything and I'm especially inconvenient about it in this particular case because I highly respect and admire the set designer. But there is no point in being lenient - LEGO exists because of the customers buying their products. It's for their own benefit to know that some product is less than Ideal. And really, I don't think there will be some big plot twist when this set get's unboxed and built - we pretty much know everything about it already and most of the complaints are absolutely valid. All in all, I hope such type of set won't appear often and the best I can do to prevent that from my position is to publish my negative oppinion about it.

42056 - Porsche Speculation
Kristof replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
^ Nice By the way, about LEGO RC supercars in general - I really wonder if it's worth it. Considering that even when greatly executed by real MOC pros, the output is always slow as a snail and you almost head the drivetrain parts cry from all that torque. Small cars with OP propulstion = OK. Big machines that are 'supposed' to be slow = OK. But big scale supercar...? Pointless for me. -
42056 - Porsche Speculation
Kristof replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
^ +1 :) By the way, is this the most pre-release discussed technic set ever? 39 pages with just several photos taken, all in less than a month... that's really a hype :D -
Trying to avoid some cruel statement, I'll say that this review is really pointless for the reader. If I exclude the statements that contain just general things (how the model gets its shape along the building process) or very obvious facts (box is small), plus all the 'fillament' phrases (which are otherwise very nice, certainly appreciable if the text was longer), very few of the actual information is left. I know that there is probably not very much to say about such small set but once you decided to review it... And of course, the lack of any picture contributes really badly to the overall impression. Actually I think that no matter how good the text is, without the pictures there is no acceptable review. However, such attempt may have point for you as you may grasp the feedback and make your next review better. My strongest advice then is to make sure that besides being well written, your output actually provides some informational value to the reader. Of course there are types of reviews that are mainly to entertain or bring fun, yet I don't think that was your goal.

Oh I see.

^ is it? from most pice of ghost I googled up, this top cickpit looks slightly narrower than front dome diameter, thus when you have 8-9 stud dome, this is 8 stud wide and it should be nearly to wide shouldn't it? (Considering two curved wedge slopes added on both sides. I can't help myself thinking that the shape formed by multiple 30536s is noway near the real thing.

[LDD Idea] Spinning Gyroscope
Kristof replied to sheo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I was already worried that you might be not continuing. So great to see this progress! Wonderful. -
Id suggest using something like THIS piece for the top windscreen. not entirely round (still quite ccurate regarding the size) but much less tricky to use than those three canopies.
-
^ Of course that building full in-scale interior is impossible, still I think this is big enough to accomodate some 2 stage decent interior, with at least some of those details.

Instructions by Jorgeopesi
Kristof replied to jorgeopesi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you! Really good instructions, especially for the first try. Of course you could have gone more fancy but as long as I went through briefly, it seems sufficient and well usable. Perhaps just one question - is there a way not to display mini LAs as three parts each? By the way could you estimate how long has it taken to make these? I'm just about to learn with MLCad and LPUb to make instructions for my SW models, yet I'm afraid I won't have enough time for that. -
Lol :D Funny and perfectly executed. I wish I'm capable of making such models one day! :D
