  1. Really? Apart from spectacular table dives after derailments, I can't say I've had any issues at all with the strength of the construction of HE (not helped by my modifying it to have all 4 of the coaches I have articulated, plus there being a cable running through the whole train to save on excessive battery packs). As for the Maersk, not had a single issue with construction, and as I preferred the container size (and design) used for that set over the city ones, I modified my existing rolling stock and containers to suit. (The built two custom coloured extra mearsk wagons and build some more containers with better looking doors, but that's another story.)
  2. If you're 9v-ing, that return loop is a bad idea (at least according to every 9v era instruction manual).
  3. Nice work on the tender. Keep up the good work!
  4. Anyone else feel that if this was the next Creator set, no one would complain?
  5. Not a bad idea that.
  6. Are there no single or double window frames in the correct colour? Would be much simpler than labeling the windows.
  7. Oh god ain't that the truth! I don't think I have a single 'final version' LDD file that is *exactly* the same as the actual final build.
  8. I think that overall you've managed to capture a good likeness, especially for a first loco MOC. I've some suggestions for the tender; Firstly, I think it's a little short, both in length and (to a lesser extent) height. (Making it bigger would also help should you chose to to put the PF stuff in the the tender.) Secondly the back of the tender really should be green too. Thirdly (and finally), have you tried using 1x2 jumper plates for the steps on the back, it'd make them closer to the prototype (see image). Here's how I did it for my 7 wide Southern Railway Q Class. At 6 wide, you'll either have to have offset steps, but only on one side, or steps on both sides, but one directly above the other. (Also, ignore the wonky buffers I keep forgetting to fix on the LDD, lol)
  9. If you use standard Lego track, road vehicles and buildings, it's well worth considering *not* going to full scale length, because it often just looks odd. The Lego minifigs are completely out of scale with the Lego track (hell Lego minifigs are completely out of scale with themselves), so if you are intending on using them, you are going to have to compromise anyway. tl:dr: Lego scale isn't really in sclae with anything, so don;t worry too much about scale length.
  10. I know, my Dad's the Director of Engineering, lol.
  11. Little known fact, for a long time, the A1 Trust seriously considered using Flying Scotsman's 2nd tender's frames for Tornado's tender until common sense prevailed and it was decided that the all new build loco should really have an all knew build tender.
  12. That's exactly what I did. When I first started, I was really impressed with the PF stuff (I still think it pretty neat, and intend to use it for any future MOCs of electric locos because the noise is spot on), but it soon became apparent to me that if I wanted to do the type of trains I wanted to do (British steam era), in the size I wanted to do (7 wide, 8 looks wrong for the British loading gauge in my eyes and 6 wide is just too restrictive) I was going to have to bite the bullet and go for 9v. Of course there are work arounds, but I don't want to make custom battery holders and I like to be able to run the locos light engine, which means they need to be powered.
  13. Impressive use of the limited space.
  14. Really nice build!
  15. OK, gonna stand against the tide here, you don't *have* to be exactly to scale if you don't want to. I am slowly building up a fleet (well, one full train at the moment, but give it time) of 7 wide British stock, and I've designed it all using nothing more than 'does it look right'? Until you are really comfortable with how to build Lego trains the way *you* want them, why constrain yourself to such rigid (and often very awkward) parameters? On to more useful advice, look at the Lego train ideas Flickr group (link) for general and more specific ideas on how to tackle difficult areas. Also search the rest of Flickr, Brickshelf and Google Image Search, both for how other people have solved problems, and also for prototype photos. Whilst the drawings are useful, nothing is more useful than a ton of good clear photos from as many angles as possible.
  16. How do you design the stickers and what do you use to print them?
  17. There's nout wrong with using compatible pieces from other companies. Where do the bricks used for the bellow platform lever come from?
  18. Very nice.
  19. At some point, I want to build some tank engines too. I'm toying with building a Stroudsly A1x Terrier (which will be nigh on impossible to power using standard Lego parts) plus the pushpull 2 coach set that one of the railways in the Isle of Wight used (which would allow me power it but not need to run it around the train to go the other way). As for further pictures (and LDD files!), I'm gonna slowly post most of my MOCs in this thread, so watch that space.
  20. Oh god, he actually did it! lol
  21. The way I see it, the Modular buildings would all be the big ones in the posher part of town, while the creator ones would have to be backstreet shops or the poorer part of town. As for creator houses, they'd be out of town anyway, so it doesn't matter as much (although there's not a lot of good Creator houses right now).
  22. So jealous! There's no LUGs anywhere near me (especially as I don't currently have a car), and the only event I know of is half the country away (admittedly, that's not very far compared to half your country!). And that's before I go into how jealous I about about the railway and rolling stock you and your group have, lol.
  23. It can, but what you save in sudden changes in the track's gradient you lose in the extra resistance of the track.
  24. Heh, honestly, I have no idea what colour/s the interior of Pullmans are (I may have step foot in one once... maybe... ), so I just went for colours I felt something of that age and luxury would use (that was easily available in Lego).
