Book II Challenge III Dwarven Affairs

Anyone wanna cook up some collabs? -
Thanks guys!

Thanks guys. I wish I had more pastel colors. They work very nicely with Kaliphlin builds, with the tan I guess. This is about all the blue I had in that shade as well. Not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate about this? I was emulating the guards from another Ruadh build. Thanks a bundle. And don't worry, I'll never abandon Mitgardia. True North, Strong and Free. Thanks everybody! It was challenging to make a compact build with so much stuff. Wall, building, outside display, road... etc.

Ridiculous, Ces. Just ridiculous.

Floka's Fine Fabrics is a new addition to the market area of Ruadh. Though she's planning an expansion, proprietress Floka is currently using the building and yard as a showing space for the dyed linens and textiles she imports from her family in Mitgardia. Mitgardian cloth, especially dyed cloth, is highly prized throughout Kaliphlin and the thicker, woolier fabrics are the perfect solution to cold desert nights. You can't go very far in Ruadh without stumbling across artists at work. Here, a husband and wife practice a heady mix of Queenscross lyre and Rakathi calligraphy. So far, Floka has been able to manage with just the warehouse space and outdoor racking available to her. Though theft is not much of a problem in Ruadh, Floka worries that it will be as the village grows. If she keeps doing so well, she'll be too nervous to carry the day's earnings on her person back to her home where it is stored in a strongbox. Thankfully, her request for a foot patrol above the shop was approved. Floka tries her best to stock as many colors and styles as possible. Here comes a customer. Floka may look Kaliphlinite after long years away from home, but she's Mitgardian down to her bones. Even at her age, she lugs a hefty roll of dyed wool in preparation for a visiting noble's order. The strain barely shows in the corner of her mouth. The second of my Ruadh builds! Not as complex or difficult as the amphitheater, but nontheless plenty of fun. This pretty much exhausts my tan which is too bad as I'd like to do something more extensive in Kali at some point. Things I notice about this build that I'd fix next time would be: a better overhead pic as I did a nice carpeting thing on the roof in bright green and purple. I'd also remove the wooden plank flooring inside Floka's shop in favor of another carpety build, perhaps a cheese mosaic or something. I was not that ambitious this time around. Finally, I should have put in supports or otherwise bulked up the catwalk above the cloth racks. Looks a little flimsy as is. Anyway, thanks for looking! It's good to be back building GoH!

Book II Challenge III Dwarven Affairs

I would suggest that people NOT mix tall dwarves and humans (both men and women, you know?) in the same build. That will just get confusing fast. -
Thanks and I agree re: Greco-Roman. Would love to see more of it in Historica. Thanks Tomsche! Thanks all! Oh thanks Cesbrick! Yeah. What's that cat fella selling!? Ah, so glad you liked it. Especially the tree, which appears to be becoming a kind of signature for Ruadh builds. One of my goals here was to show off some ethnic diversity in Ruadh because it feels like the kind of place people from all over would gather. Thanks DG. Yeah, this may be the first Greek-style amphitheater in GoH. Not sure. Thanks Gideon! After your last Kali build (let alone any other one!), such praise from you is wonderful. Seems like you made a more traditional curving wall with the linked build? It's hard to tell because you hid the work so well. :P For the amphitheater, I made "pies" offset by small 1x3 (?) wing plates reinforced with additional, invisible hinges. It's not like any other curved wall technique I've seen. I looked around quite a bit too, because that part of the build had me stumped for hours! Thanks mrcp6d! I had to restrain myself from adding more and more figs. All the jumper plates on the forum show my indecisiveness about placing and quantity. I looked at the finished build and was like "hey, that's enough!" and then stopped. Thankfully. Been known to overstuff a MOC with 'figs.

Dwarves' side here. Just for fun! -
Thanks! That "bleacher" structure was incredibly hard to get right. Took 3 hours of fiddling. Thanks MK. It wasn't easy! Yeah, I wanted to give a shoutout to SarahJoy's design because it's awesome and feels like a signature for Ruadh to me. Thanks! Thanks!

One of the common spaces in Ruadh, this amphitheater (also known as the Ruadh Forum) hosts scholars, orators, philosophers, and teachers from all around Historica. Today, a young woman debates the esoteric metaphysical claims of a long-dead Nocturnian mystic. Many have come to hear the debate and learn, others to have a bit of wine and victuals in attractive company. Since the space is public and free to all, the philosophers must shout competitively over the capering of a juggler and the self-involved bleating of a lecher with a horn. Most boys would probably prefer a nice apple to whatever that merchant is selling. Phew. Been a while since I've done a GoH build. Sorry about that! This one was discussed with SarahJoy about a month ago and was thus a relatively long-planned comeback build after all my inactivity of late. Destiny + new school year = Lego lull. I hope everyone (especially SarahJoy!) likes this one and thank you for looking! C&C always welcome, of course. Especially since this is my first Kali build. I've now officially done a build in every Guild!

Great series. I like the way the story is expressed through these, and appreciate the humor! Those first two builds are my favorite. Excellent capturing of Mitgardian terrain.

Still needs some work landscaping wise, but your photography and the filter set a great mood and I'm excited to see how that affects future, hopefully more detailed builds!
-
Really like the activity in this. Lots of interesting characters doing interesting things. I especially like the rooftop garden and the assassin below (?).
-
Great vignette here. Lot's going on here without it feeling overly busy and it's also a very nice execution of a simple (good) idea.
-
Amazing build. A lot of work went into this and you can easily tell at a glance. I like the boldness of including so many details where you could have placed Minifigs but didn't. Adds to the atmosphere to have it all kind of abandoned outside of the travelers. I especially like your signpost. Very clever.

Diaries of Beorthan II: Departure (HSS Military)

The fortification looks strong and very clean. It's a great build, similar to Kabel's AOE2 inspired Ruadhic house. Good landscaping too, with the only weak point being the grass around the pump. -
Second build for Book 2 finally done. I was on a bit of a Lego hiatus and to be honest, had some creative block with this one. It's not my favorite but it'll do. OP updated.

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
mccoyed replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
Welcome. Good sigfig. Is that the werewolf hair though? -
Yeah definitely an AOE2 vibe here!
-
Very cool way to do a series of small builds. I like the maps on the walls especially.
-
Beautifully executed and clean build here. Everything about this one is win. The elements of balcony, main house, orange tree, and yard with kiln are well balanced and everything is visible.

Thanks Kabel. And yeah, I hear you. I had a hankering to do something a bit darker and more urban and LoR had the right contests and stuff going on. I'll be doing some more GoH very soon. It's been sort of an off-Lego period for me these last few weeks in general. The timbers are meant to be more inspired by tudor/half-timber style than strictly emulation but I can see how closer emulation would look way better. Especially the framing. I hear you. I'd like to do more cinematic shots for sure. It can be difficult with my photography setup. The reason my angles are sometimes sort of "straight on" is due to trying to keep edges of my background out of the shot. I also crop pictures to remove that and sometimes they end up having funny dimensions as a result. Something to work on. I think you're explanation of the different ways to photograph builds is apt and an interesting discussion topic in itself. I think these builds aren't quite "story builds" the way you define it. I like your distinction and can see what you mean about the way a "story build" should be done to immerse the viewer. These are more diorama style than that, I suppose. Still need to do a better "overview" shot for any large-size builds I do. If you browse through my Flickr feed, maybe you can help me by pointing out specific builds I've done with shots closer to what you mean or point out how they could be improved?

The tower looks great when the build is photographed with it behind the house. When the tower is fully visible, it suffers in comparison of detail. The rest of the house is great but I really hate that tree. It's probably just aesthetics but to me, it looks like some kind of swampy tree monster about to eat all those poor ladies. In the context of Lego trees, it just... kind of doesn't look like a tree. :P
