A stunning build and presentation, absolutely every detail of this MOC is eye candy. The stern galley, bowsprit and rigging are incredibly elegant. Superb work, you have put together a masterpiece!

Book II - Nocturnus: Guild sign-up and Discussion
MassEditor replied to ZCerberus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks for the encouragement Lord Vladivus and Ska for the quick answer! My first Warlords build is now up: Warlords: Anfauglir: Phase 1 -
Lord Anfauglir is my sig fig and the number two guy in the faction I'm developing for Nocturnus. He is the loyal lieutenant and enforcer of Senurhem Nogad's will. Nicknamed The Black Maw by his troops and enemies alike, Anfauglir has been a servant of Senurhem's longer than any other. He is trusted primarily with the enforcement of internal affairs and as captain of the dreaded Vulkhar, powerful liches clad in black who ride undead mounts to battle. It is rumored that Anfauglir was once a mortal man who, through the most profane practice of necromancy, succeeded in attaining eternal life - but at a cost. Instead of maintaining the visage of his youth Anfauglir slowly deteriorated into the horrific, undead monster he is today. Though new to Nocturnus, Anfauglir and the rest of Senurhem's forces have declared their solid allegiance to these shadowy lands and commit themselves to the fight against the Black Spire. Anfauglir is a lover of siege weapons and spends much of his time maintaining his tower defenses and training troops in their use. When not serving his master's will and attempting to undermine the forces of good, Anfauglir enjoys an evening alone over a nice bottle of Avalonian wine and a pipe of Kaliphlin tobacco (all wrongfully gained, of course). Any C&C welcome!

Gorgeous build Bentoft! There's so much to look at here and it's all very well done. The flower garden/statue and inner stair case are my favorites.

Great job capturing your guild's architecture and presenting it in a very unique style!

Great scene and story! I look forward to seeing some more! The blood, axe and minifig posing convey a very emotional scene which you captured very well. I love the snowy hill, especially after you touched it up with a few more cheese slopes.- 17 replies

Book II - Nocturnus: Guild sign-up and Discussion
MassEditor replied to ZCerberus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks Gunman and Emma! I appreciate the warm (er.. cold?) welcome! Alright, I feel like I might be getting the hang of what's going on around here, maybe... I've almost completed my first Warlords build and got something started for the second and for a GNAR build. Unfortunately I'm coming to the game a little late so I'll doubt I'll have the third phase Warlords done by the May 31 deadline. One question though, do free builds I make for Nocturnus outside of a challenge count towards anything for our Guild? For instance, if my third phase Warlords build doesn't make the deadline can I still post it to some advantage for Nocturnus? -
Thanks but I was able to find it!

Wow, stunning build. That wood floor looks incredibly real. So many great little details - too many to count actually. The walls and folded rug are very clever. Beautiful scene and story!

Another awesomely crafted scene. The lighting and photography are super sharp.

More reinforcements! And thanks for the welcome everyone! -
Thanks! Haha! To be honest, I took the Tower apart the same day I finished it. I love a lot of the sets but I just don't ever keep them together - I need the pieces too bad for my own stuff! I think one of the keys to MOCing is not getting too attached to the stuff you build. That's what I told my fellow builders on Saturday during our show, at the end of which I completely demolished the Crater of Doom (with some glee, I might ad)! Now I finally get to work on something else! Thanks! I'm glad I finally quit lurking and joined up! You know, this was my first build ever where I attempted to estimate the pieces I used. I gave up at the ~25,000 mark (including the 10K in orange dots). As far as weigh goes, I'd say it was in excess of 60 pounds (we have 50-pound sacks of feed for the cattle, which feel MUCH lighter than the Crater) Thank you sir! Thanks a ton for your interest!! Thank you Gunman, means a lot coming from an accomplished builder like you. Thanks a ton! Awesome! I'm glad you like it! Your Nocturnus builds are through the roof though. Hey futuresportz, honestly I didn't have any kind of master plan and mostly built through trial and error. I think the keys things to consider is having a wide variety of dark bley (or light, if that's your thing) slopes, plates and bricks in your possession. BURPS can be a great base to build a mountain from. Use your unused, multi-color bricks and plates to build up the support on the inside of the mountain. Since no one can see in there, who cares what color you use? Also, try looking at real rock formations to get an idea of what you want to do. Rocks and mountains may look incredibly random but there is still a lot of pattern. Try to replicate that but don't forget about the wilder geological features too (which I admittedly did not do enough of in this MOC) like jutting rocks and loose boulders at the base. I hope that helps a little. I would love to see what you get together! Thanks! Thanks Konig78! I'd say about three months of build this scene, though it went through several major reincarnations before I settled on the current design. I appreciate it Funky Rooster! Thanks! Haha! Oh my, this is absolutely wonderful! Masterful landscaping and castle design. The siege engines in particular are the best I've seen.
-
I think as long as you are using other techniques to add variety to your architecture then heck yeah, it will only add to the realism of the build. A castle wall built simply from standard bricks doesn't look great in any color. I do have to say, I've felt great peace since the day I finally weeded out my last dark grey and light grey pieces!
-
Pretty scene, and very big! The battlements and corn fields are beautifully done! I would suggest a couple of simple things though. To get rid of that gap under the castle just throw some brown or green tiles around the border of the base. That way you'll get that angled look (which is always great) and it'll be flush with the landscaping. Also, I think your terrain could benefit from just a little more detailed landscaping by using some 1x1 and 1x2 plates to break up the lines of the different elevations. I try to show no more than three or four studs in a row before breaking the lines up with some smaller plates. Plants can also help with that. Oh yeah, can you please, please, PLEASE tell me how you got that shield embedded in the castle wall like that?!?

Wonderful design, this would be a great compliment to the corsair ship already released. This ship has "official Lego set" written all over it. I'm glad to do what I can to support it!

Very nice little ship, looks perfect for the swamps! I'm guessing the skeleton in the back didn't exactly get the best seat in the house?

So clever and so much of what makes France great summed up in one MOC! I love the tower and the addition of Corsica. Very nice work!

Book II - Nocturnus: Guild sign-up and Discussion
MassEditor replied to ZCerberus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Hello! Hopefully I'm doing this in the right place but here goes my attempt to join Nocturnus! The forces of Senurhem Nogad wish to seek an alliance with the other armies and leaders of Nocturnus and to aid its goals in any way possible. Here's some (admittedly lengthy) background on my sig fig and others in this faction for those who are interested! I have to admit I haven't done much minifig customization so I'm sure the look of my characters will evolve somewhat as time goes on. Lord Anfauglir (and a couple of his not-so-scary-looking underlings) Lord Anfauglir is my sig fig and the right hand man... er, wraith of Senurhem Nogad. Anfauglir is the loyal lieutenant and enforcer of Senurhem's will. Unable to return to the world of the living, Anfauglir spent decades preying on the weak and helpless in the isolated parts of the world. Like a dark shadow enveloping the forest he spread fear and dissent wherever he went. Eventually he was uncovered by a young hero who rallied what forces of good he could and drove Anfauglir to the east. Homeless, alone and hunted like a rabid dog, Anfauglir was caught unawares by a troop of Orcs commanded by the powerful warlock Senurhem. Unaware of what power Anfauglir possessed, the orcs chained him, struck him with the blunt end of their axes and rifled through his belongings. For three days the orcs marched Anfauglir with neither rest nor water. For three days Anfauglir never uttered a word, despite how hard the orcs would strike him in their attempt at discover his purpose in these lands. Upon the fourth day their master's fortress could be seen in the distance and the troop doubled its pace. The orcs, anxious for fresh meat and mead, did not notice the dark words now being whispered by Anfauglir, nor did they notice the evil shadow forming around him.Upon reaching the gate to Senurhem's dark fortress, the orc chieftain moved ahead and commanded the wall guards to open its massive doors. Before the orc could turn back to his troop and command them to enter, a darkness enveloped the troop and nothing could be seen - only the shriek of dying orcs pierced the dark veil. The chieftain stood frozen in awe as the black fog lifted and revealed the bodies of more than a dozen dead orcs. A few others lay wounded while one, suspended in air by his neck in the now free hand of Anfauglir, struggled to escape his clutch. Anfauglir then picked up one of the dead orc's swords and drove it into the creature gasping for air in front of him. Infuriated at the complete destruction of his troop the orc chieftain rushed at Anfauglir but he was cut down by a quick blow. The commander of the wall guards ordered several more orc troops to attack. He watched each Anfauglir single-handly destroy each unit until Senurhem himself arrived. Flanked by his personal body guard and a pack of mountain trolls armed with clubs the size of an orc, Senurhem approached Anfauglir and in a single blow destroyed the weapon in Anfauglir's hand. Anfauglir cast a spell but Senurhem sent it arcing back at him, taking Anfauglir off his feet and launching him backwards. Senurhem's bodyguards rushed Anfauglir before he could stand, each with their weapons aimed at his head. No power possessed by Anfauglir would be able to defeat these dark spirits and their lord. Anfauglir knew this was the end and he did not regret it. Eternal life had brought him untold suffering. He would never know the warm embrace of another soul, or another feeling of happiness as long as he roamed the world. He now saw his end, and he never felt freer. But Senurhem had something different in mind. A master of ruthless calculus, he knew he could mold Anfauglir into a powerful tool for his own aims. He spared Anfauglir that day, and in the centuries since Anfauglir has defeated many enemies under Senurhem's banner. Anfauglir eventually rose to Senurhem's inner council, and now wields the power he had only dreamed of as a mortal necromancer. Few have the access to Senurhem's chambers that Anfauglir enjoys. Senurhem's orc armies have even took to calling Anfauglir "Little Boss" in derogatory recognition of his status in this dark kingdom.Although Anfauglir has served his master's will ruthlessly and unquestionably for centuries, there have been disturbances in Anfauglir's fealty that only few have noticed. These days Senurhem spends less time commanding than studying the arcane, constantly searching for the means to expand his power to all corners of the land. While Sernurhem locks himself away in his dark tower, Anfauglir has watched his power over Sernurhem's forces grow. They look less to their master for direction these days and cling more to Anfauglir's makeshift rule. Word spreads that Sernurhem has delved too deep into the black arts, that his mind is spiraling down to the darkest reaches. Some fear Senurhem's actions risk the destruction of his entire dominion. Anfauglir, who by no means detests his new stature, has not done as much as his master would expect in quashing these rebellious rumors. In fact, the thirst for power is seemlingly too strong for Anfauglir to resist, and he gathers power without Senurhem's knowledge. New recruits entering Senurhem's armies are being formed into separate units, and are asked to swear their fealty to only one name: Lord Anfauglir. Rumors have also surfaced that the Vulkhar are searching the darkest corners of the land for powerful allies and beasts that will call Anfauglir their master. General Gh'rak Gro-Sukrath General Gh'rak Gro-Sukrath commands Senurhem's field armies, usually from the front ranks - a distinction that inspires awe in both his troops and enemies. This up-front leadership has also left his body and face covered in scars from countless battles. In past battles, some say, Gh'rak has killed more enemies than his top ten warriors combined (the more cynical among Senurhem's generals say the lazy orc-goblins that comprise Gh'rak's armies are just happy to let their commander do all the work). Gh'rak entered his master's service at an early age, after Senurhem's forces utterly destroyed Gh'rak's Orc tribe, leaving him as the sole survivor. Tribal tradition states new leaders are chosen at the end of a war club, so Gh'rak declared his fealty to Senurhem and has been a faithful and ferocious commander ever since. The bulk of Gh'rak's armies are made up of the miserable, squalid creatures that reside under Senurhem's dominion. While most would fare poorly against their counterparts in one-on-one combat, it is the sheer number of Gh'rak's troops that inspire fear of Senurhem. Like other armies, Gh'rak's forces are composed of infantry and archer troops with attached specialized units like siege and engineering troops. Although their equipment is usually crude, Gh'rak's armies benefit from an endless supply of weaponry and armor created in Senurhem's deep forges. Gh'rak is feared as much by his troops as he his by his enemies, and he does not tolerate even the slightest complaint from his troops - especially when it concerns Senurhem. It is well known among the armies that the speaker of one muttered word against the Master will undoubtedly end on the Headsman's chopping block. Gh'rak's allegiance to Senurhem is absolute, and for this reason he has eyed Afauglir's interim rule with suspicion. The Headsman Known simply as the Headsman, this mysterious and terrifying entity serves as the harbinger of Senurhem's wrath - primarily through the use of his razor sharp axe. In these lands there is no jury or judge, only executioner, and in this role the Headsman serves well. In his decades terminating those deemed unnecessary to Senurhem's aims, the Headsman has asked his master of only one reward - to keep the heads of his victims. Because of the Headsman, Sernurhem's dungeons have only rarely been used. Senurhem Nogad Senurhem rarely leaves the comfort of his chambers these days, and few remember the time their master has felled a foe on the battlefield. Although none of Senurhem's subjects would dare risk their master's wrath, some have expressed their dissent in secret. They fear their master has lost in mind in the pursuit of arcane weapons, and that his ability to command - and unify the discordant factions under his control - is slipping away. In a time when the threat to the eastern lands has never been greater, with vengeful, expansionist enemies on all borders, they fear Senurhem is unable to carry them to victory. For the time being their only option is to seek alliance with the other factions controlling Nocturnus and to fight the going threats to the lands. Whew... Ok, glad I got that out of the way. :grin:Now, I've got that the Warlords builds are a big focus right now, anything else I should really be focusing on? Also, I built the MOC in the pictures above as a backdrop of where my characters hail. If I can use it towards anything Guild related that would be awesome, though in my haste to share this MOC I did recently post in the the Historic forum. Not sure if that disqualifies it for anything. If so, just means I'll get to build something else! -
Absolutely stunning brig. I have never seen such intricate rigging before - I don't think I'll be going out on a limb here when I assume you shared more than a few swear words in the process of all that work! This is pure art. Awesome work!

Man, I never thought of using candles. That's definitely worth trying, thanks for the tip! I'll post some pics if I can get the effect down and see what you think! Thank you, just name a price! Thanks! Only thing is, this would sit on your desk and it would never move. This thing is too darn heavy! This is going to a show this weekend and since it was traveling a distance away I was worried it would fall apart. So, the mountains are about 100 percent solid. It's as solid as a brick (no pun intended) but man is it heavy! Thanks Big E, I'm honored by the Frontpage bump and humbled by your own incredible building talent. I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to good rockwork. It is too easy to see nothing but randomness in nature when in fact there is incredible pattern and repetition, even (or especially, if you're a devout geologist) in rock formations. The key is to mix the styles when representing mountains in Legos, and I'm hoping to get a little better each time. Thanks Zond! I appreciate it! Thanks you! I have to admit, it was pretty cool coming into work this morning and seeing that when I checked the site! Thanks, me too! I may be a bit biased by my love for historical-themed Legos, but GoH seems like the center of inspiration in the Lego universe. Thanks! I'm glad you like it!

What a fun scene. Great work! May I ask where you got the sticker with the scrolls and potions on it?

The lava lake was looking a little empty so I've added this skeletal dragon type critter being summoned from the fiery depths: Crater9 Thanks! I've got a few characters and stories about worked up so hopefully I'll be able to enter the fray soon. I appreciate it! The book and the palantir (which many think is a marble) are certainly giveaways to the orthanc set! Thanks kez! I'm glad you like the border! Sometimes, like this time, it can be the hardest part of a MOC! I certainly appreciate it, though honestly this isn't a LOTR MOC - I just really like the figs! I'm gonna try your idea of a dark background with lighting, I can see that really adding to it. My biggest regret was not incorporating more lights into the build, especially under the lava. The few lights I had wouldn't have done much justice, and I about blew my budget for this project on the neon orange 1x1 round plates alone!
