[GNAR] The Swiftsure (Ship of the Isles)
MassEditor replied to Bregir's topic in Guilds of Historica
Neat little ship, the ballista is awesome looking! Nice background info on your ship too! -
Thanks a lot everyone! I used a fog machine to get that effect. Unfortunately the store was out of the special solution and wasn't sure if it would ever get any again, so I had to use water whose effect is no where near as dramatic. In any case, the thing still produced enough smoke for the neighbors to think the house had caught fire! I appreciate that Gabe! The most challenging part of the build was definitely the boat's color. How I would love a few more pieces in dark brown...

Very pretty scene Kai, I love the stone walkway leading to the castle, and the colors are very well done (though, as mentioned above, the black is a little out to place but still hardly distracts from the scene.) I really like how smooth the transition is from the straight gate to the rounded towers. Great job!

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions! Thanks Garmadon! I was a little unsure about using dark green for water, it never really looked right until the rest of the scene was built, and then the dark green really highlighted the scene I think. Who said anything about attacking? We are simply inspecting the ship (rather, trespasser!) for any contraband. :D

Defense of Little Round Top
MassEditor replied to Gary The Procrastinator's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Amazing! This is so realistic looking I thought I almost heard the rebel yell! Your combination of elevating terrain and SNOT rockwork is beyond expert. The massed formation of union troops and the irregular look of the confederates - properly spread out in typical skirmishing formation - is spot on. Can't wait to see more from you!- 20 replies

Greetings! Here, finally, is my Nocturnian entry for the Greater Naval Arms Race. Because I've spent all my Lego money on orange, 1x1 round plates, I wanted build this entirely out of pieces I already had, which required some sacrifices here and there (including the odd shape of the swamp water, which was the best I could do with the pieces I had. I would have liked to extend the swamp a little further, but again, I had a lot fewer dark green bricks than I had thought.) Anways, enough apologizing, here is the entry and a very small story to go with it! Nocturnian Patrol Boats serve numerous roles for the rulers of these dark lands, from infiltrating assassins and privateer work to transporting entire field armies for amphibious assaults. Because the stale air of Nocturnian swamps limits the usefulness of sails - and because it is doubtful many orcs could be trained to properly tack through the strange winds that do happen to blow - these boats are entirely oar-powered. Their shallow draft allows them to glide over the stagnant swamp waters where other, larger ships would find themselves grounded. However, the lack of sails and the shallow draft of these vessels makes them almost useless - and at the very least completely unsafe - for use in the open ocean. These boats carry no integral weaponry because their main task is not to face warships in open battle. Instead, Nocturnian admirals prefer to send these patrol boats en masse to surprise and then overwhelm larger ships. Each patrol boat is equipped with numerous grappling hooks to aide in the boarding process. After attaching to another vessel, the oarsmen then pick up their weapons and equipment and enter battle. The boats are equipped with rams in case the goal is to sink, not capture, enemy vessels. Nocturnian patrol boats are also efficient raiding and commerce interdiction platforms. They are nearly silent, and Nocturnian captains have learned to use heavy fog to mask the vessel's movement. Often, by the time one of these ships is seen, it is too late to prepare a defense. The patrol boats have ample storage room for loot and equipment in a compartment below the top deck and on the top deck itself. Anfauglir enjoys a nice day of boating as much as any other. This day he has joined his sailors in a patrol of the outer stretches of the Nocturnian swamps, in hope of catching a Mitgardian trader or patrol boat brave (rather, foolish) enough to enter these waters. Fortunately, Anfauglir has much better company than the dimwitted orcs manning the vessel. Korrak has lent his eagle-like vision to today's patrol - a sure sign any trespassers will be caught completely unaware. "This fog is thicker than the skulls of these cursed orcs, thank you for lending a hand today, Korrak," Anfauglir said, pulling out a flask and handing it to the hooded, raven-eyed figure standing next to him. "Even the light of my staff will not cut through this blanket." Korrak took a swig of the black liquor and handed the flask back. "These are dark times for a dark land. Perhaps a better understanding of our two tribes will give us benefit in the future. Still, I would not like to leave this river float without some trophy for our effort." Anfauglier peered into the fog but nothing was visible beyond the bow. He glanced at Korrak, who stared ahead as if he could look straight through the misty veil. "If there's something out there, I'm sure you'll see it." "There is much I see, more than I can say now," said Korrak, turning his eyes from the fog to Anfauglir. "There is a role you will play - for all of us to play." He looked forward again, this time noticing two small lights through the fog. "But we will have time to discuss that later. For now, we have found prey." After several moments the lights became visible to Anfauglir, and he could notice a flag emblazoned in blue and red. The ship was obviously a merchant vessel, with crew members lazily sprawled out around the deck. "Kaliphlin, eh? Long way from home, and from reinforcements. Many years it has been since I remembered the taste of the strange spices from those lands. Perhaps they will have some to spare!" Thanks for checking it out and any C&C is much appreciated! Oh and Torgar, I hope you didn't mind me adding your fig to the scene! I know he's not perfect (where is that awesome torso from?!?) but you're the only fellow Nocturnian I thought I could get close to with the parts I have on hand. No offense to our guild brothers and sisters, they are with us in spirit I'm sure!

Wow, I can't believe I haven't seen this yet! I love the courtyard area and especially that really unique design you used for the buildings. Your technique for the stone floor really works well. Wonderful story, and the minifig posing looks so realistic. Excellent job!- 18 replies

SRT, stop it, you're making me blush! Thank you for the kind words! I've got a few more ideas for those 1x1 orange dots before it's all said and done with! Thanks Infernum! Thank you much for the great encouragement Garmadon! Thanks de Gothia! It gets lonely in that old tower of his, so maybe a hug isn't a bad idea. Undead are kinda boney though! Thanks a lot Rolli! -
Can I come over to your house and see this for myself?!? What an awesome scene you have going on here! The waterfront buildings are definitely my favorite, and that SNOT rock work on the right house is expertly done! This, Kabel, is certainly inspiring! I think I could spend a couple of days looking at everything you built here.

Stunning build! What a wonderful scene you crafted here. The temple roof in particular is incredibly striking, though I think some tiles on those studs would give it just a little cleaner look. Besides that I'm pretty much at a loss of words for this MOC! The courtyard, the beautifully-crafted door and so many other little details really combine to make this one of the most dynamic and intricate history MOCs I've laid my eyes on! Well done, I can't wait to see more from you!

Cool! The world's first MANPAD! Dare I say, a little cute looking too!
-
Mean looking ship, I love the ballista and the ram! A medieval-age ship isn't a ship without a ram! The figs and story are great too!
-
Wow, I've finally read through these so far, absolutely wonderful! I love the techniques and designs you seem to pioneer in each one of these tales. Like many above, the underwater scenes are superb. This is a new reason to check Eurobricks more often!

Very cool looking tower Bob, though the little building next to it is my favorite part. Very nicely done! I'm glad you got a picture of this before it toppled!

A pretty scene and very-well written story! I really like your design for the semi-circular stage area.

Lovely ship and scene Hammerbro! That's an awesome technique too for the anchor!

This is both hilarious and an awesome build! I wasn't sure what the hell I was looking at there for a second but now I can't stop laughing! Very unique

Lovely design, and very nice roof technique!

Brother Steven, this is fantastic! What a beautiful little scene, I love how you paid attention to so many details. Like mentioned above, the guys rolling the rock is just one great example of that attention to detail. Your castle wall design is simply and wonderfully done. I love the gold-filled chest tucked away too. Perfect scene sir!

Warlords of Nocturnus: Anfauglir: Phase 1
MassEditor replied to MassEditor's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks man! Here's a pic of how the sides attach: I appreciate it! Believe me, I'm not through with those orange 1x1 dots just yet! Thanks a lot guys! Yes, and the best part is, no hangovers. Thanks LR! The door is a simple SNOT design and attached to a hinge plate to get the angle. Here's a closer pic: Hey SK, thanks a lot! Please borrow away good sir! I would be honored to see one of these cauldrons in one of your excellent MOCs! Thanks again Gunman for the encouragement! Thanks a ton Gabe! I thought about adding another level to show off Anfauglir's romantic side, but I figured I better keep things PG rated on here. The weapons were definitely my favorite part of the build! I haven't been here long, but that seems like it should be the natural order of things. Thanks Kai, yeah it can be tough, especially with all the dust a black MOC can gather in such a short time frame! I tried some late afternoon shooting on a partly cloudy day and that really seemed to make a huge difference compared to the lights I use inside. -
Two wonderful builds, such pretty details!
