  1. Found a few 75301s out in the wild, so I picked one up to experience the new smaller tier X-wing - I was especially curious about the Technic scissor mechanism used for the s-foils. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of accuracy and proportion the designer achieved with a smaller piece count - great build! I added a few bits and pieces...
  2. This looks GREAT - a memorable scene deserves a cool diorama for sure! I haven't watched the video link yet, but your presentation and photography is very well done. And last but not least, the trees look amazing. RIP Cara Dune - we hardly knew ye.
  3. DANG! This looks fantastic! I was intrigued by this ship, but the official version was phoned-in by LEGO, and not having watched the entire movie I'm not sure how much screen time it received. The exterior detail is perfect - some studs here and there, very well designed greeblies, it's all there! I especially like the gun turrets and the detail work on the middle section. All the different angles of the hull look really good as well. Welcome and thanks for sharing! Awesome work!
  4. ^^ OH MAH GAWD I love this A-wing!!
  5. Hello 2mpaired! While you're around, allow me to thank you again for making these instructions available through BrickVault! It's an incredible achievement and proved a most challenging project, for sure! Your internal frame design is a true masterpiece of over-engineering and it's very satisfying to know that it would support just about anything! All the external detail would occasionally become tedious and rather delicate in certain areas, but the final payoff is well worth the effort - it looks like an ILM model!! In retrospect, I understand that each and every design choice was in pursuit of 'movie model' accuracy. The finished product is mesmerizing to behold, and I'm very fortunate to have one occupying my kitchen counter. Now...to find a permanent spot for it!
  6. There are actually ten 3679 Turntable Tops, eight of which exist at the very tips of each of the four main panels (re: Books 3 & 5) Here are some build photos: Image is link
  7. Nahhh! Rip that thing apart and make it better! Below are some photos of my very simple mod. From Inquisitive's description of the .io files, it sounds similar to what I did. I used the white upper halves from the tanker pieces in the 60016 Octan truck. Images are links:
  8. Awesome! That's definitely a great deal for one of the best UCS sets to date. Curious if you decided to mod the engine exhaust section! Image is link:
  9. You're not wrong! The Lambda shuttle is one of my favorite vehicles in the SWU, but the 75302 is a hard pass for me. The new TIE and X-wing seem to fit quite well in the new price tier, cannot say the same for the shuttle. It's a step backward from the 75094 IMHO.
  10. Hey Morgrim, welcome! The mods are not re-purposed parts from the original set, they have to be ordered in addition. Well worth the effort, if you ask me. Also, I would argue that there's several ways to modify the nose and engines but a good start would be the wheels that make up the intake of the more proportioned engines. The remainder of the engine sections can be shaped using all the new slope elements that were less common when the set released. Have fun!
  11. Welcome to the forums! I'm skipping around in the instructions, building all sorts of random sub-assemblies out of order. Any Technic liftarm can be pretty much any color you want. About the only exception being the L-shaped black liftarms that are sandwiched between the pillar halves of the display stand. Everything else is well concealed. In fact, I would go as far as to say that any color other than black and light grey (LBG) can be substituted. Personally, I'm thankful for color differences in the instructions here and there - makes building a bit easier. Also, I'm using an extensive mixture of 'old' light grey and light blueish grey for a weathered look. I really like the results. Finally, I found it very helpful to browse through all the instruction books ahead of building to get a sense of what's hidden, and what's on full display - your questions will definitely be answered. Have fun!
  12. Yes. More than slightly. 3 strikes there, so I decided to pass on this one. I really like your mods on the fins - big improvement. Other than the overall chunky look of this model, I'm disappointed in those white wedge slopes up front. It looks like the designer abandoned the innovative angled construction and phoned in the rest toward the nose. To be fair, I realize the designers are required to adhere to a certain 'sturdiness' standard, etc...but the lines of the forward fuselage are ruined by what seems (to me, at least) a shortcut. I've also been recently spoiled by custom MOCs, so that makes it easier to pass on a set that needs modifications right out of the box
  13. I found the parts cost estimate on the BVT website to be very accurate. I spent ~ $2,595 on the parts alone, and about $160 on shipping, Insurance, fees, etc... for only eight Bricklink orders. I set the search filters for U.S. sellers to save on time and shipping costs, and tweaked each order for the maximum parts available from my wanted list. While doing this may slightly elevate cost per lot, minimizing the number of orders is a much better way to go in my opinion. Also I would often round up lot counts, so purchasing only the exact parts list would be even less expensive. It also helps to have a good percentage of parts already in your inventory You will find the cost of all the tile elements is the bulk of the expense. Finally, I'll admit that I purchased the instructions before I was fully committed to the project. Worth it in the end.
  14. ...oh the antici...PATION
  15. I0renZo, Lego Spotlight: Thanks for the replies! Problem solved - although it required some trial & error. Using the Terminal window 'unzip' command indicated a corrupt zip file! Apparently the archive utility included in the MacOS suite of apps is not up to the task. Expanding the file required the use of a third party application. I chose a trial version of something called The Unarchiver...maybe I'll rename my future Eviscerator with that ominous title
  16. Hello all, I just purchased these instructions and I'm having difficulty expanding the .zip file. After each download (Mac OS, Firefox/Safari) I get this dialogue box when attempting to open the compressed file: While I wait for a reply from Brickvault, any thoughts?
  17. Uhh...WOW!! What a way to make a splash on the forum!! This build is jaw-dropping in every regard - the texturing with the various shades of brown is perfect! The shapes and angles you achieved are most impressive. One question: Is there a specific reason you chose the very dark brown color for the front 'nose' door? I don't recall there being such a color difference on the vehicle. Either way, incredible work!
  18. ^^At least LEGO finally got the engines right with those new curved elements. All the earlier iterations of the Resistance X-wing suffer, IMO. The new movies - being aimless, recycled, forgettable garbage - didn't help soften the sticker shock either.
  19. OOOOH I really like this one! So many neat features of this little build! The color scheme looks great, excellent greebling with the perfect amount of it. I really like the side plumbing/equipment and the rooftop antennae. Also, the two container units at the front door look great as well. OH! The use of the spring-loaded shooters on the outer edge of the roof looks fantastic - I've never seen them used that way! Thanks for sharing this - great build!
  20. ...oops Nothing Star Wars
  21. VBBN: Mind-blowing review! Thank you for taking what must have been many, many hours to bring this review to the boards. Day 1 purchase, without hesitation. This set is once again ringing all the GB member berry bells of childhood! I remember constructing my own GB Halloween costume in grade school - it had all the fixins right down to the shoulder patch. The proton pack was crude, but I was proud of it! I'll leave the rust stickers off, and I really don't care if the new movie is even released. This classic vehicle is a crown jewel of film history and I can't WAIT to rip that box open!! 10/10, thank you LEGO for a slam dunk!
  22. Just built the 75288 AT-AT. Best AT-AT to date by far. Solid construction (except for maybe some weak hip joints), good proportions, great minifigs, the mobile cannon and speeder bike fit inside...worth the price, IMHO. Nicely done, LEGO.
  23. Just built the AT-AT. The legs definitely migrate outward a bit when they're positioned in a walking pose, but the click hinges never buckled. I observed this on a clean, smooth countertop (slippery). When placed on any other surface with slightly more friction - even a blank piece of paper - the slippage was nonexistent. So yes, the click hinges would most likely buckle under more weight if the legs are configured any other way than straight. For all we know, LEGO designers had this exact same discussion and deemed the weaker clutch of the hinges still adequate to support the model. Thankfully it's not as bad as I feared but if I were to display this in a walking pose, I'd keep it resting on a more grippy surface for sure. $ .02
  24. ^^That's not good at all! And yes, absolutely, cuz now I'm very curious about this issue. If LEGO can't even keep a System scale walker upright, forget about a UCS version forever! I'm fortunate to have spare click hinges from several 4483 sets that have been parted out. They're the last of the 'old grey' and they're pretty tough! Not sure when I'll get around to building the new AT-AT, but either way I'll check back in. More to follow...
  25. Interesting intel about the clutch power. Just picked up this set, curious to compare the clutch power with the older ones. With regard to your mods, do you have any other head-on angle photos? Seems like the hip joints protrude out way too far. I always regarded the spindly legs as a signature attribute of the AT-AT, where the body is wider than the 'hip' width. Seems like using older click hinges might be a better option to me...*shrug*
