Alpha 3 Nimbus Class Starfighter (The V-wing)
DFOL replied to Commander Colt's topic in LEGO Star Wars
That is one amazing V-Wing Commander Colt, very nicely done indeed! I love the angles and lines in your design, and by the looks of it your model is pretty close to the source material. If i may make an observation though, when comparing your model to the reference pictures you provided, i did notice that your wings are a lot narrower than the original. I don't know if you intended them that way, but in my opinion it would be more accurate if they were one or two studs wider. -
Is there still any hair left on the cat, or is it all on your LEGO? Your training camp is coming along nicely, the pictures you posted do look promising indeed!

Thanks for the reference picture jmagaletta, it changed my opinion about this MOC quite a bit. With the Expanded Universe version of the Z-95 still in my mind, initially the design of this MOC seemed quite a bit off to me. But after seeing the Clone Wars reference picture it all made a whole lot more sense! Great job Clone-Cat, i really like the sleek look of your fighter! However i think there are some fair points made in the constructive feedback given in the comments above. Compared to the reference picture the wings seem very wide, i think it would be more accurate to make them 2 or even 4 studs narrower. Also, Mr Man already gave a very good tip about the smaller winglets. I think your approach to the reactor bulge behind the cockpit is quite interesting, and especially the creative way you incorporated the cone at the rear in your build made me smile. But i have to agree that the bulge does look less smooth than the rest of the fighter. If you're thinking of reworking that area, the way pedro built the reactor bulge in his version of the Z-95 is quite simple but effective in my opinion, a similar approach might be worth considering.

I know what you're saying, a broader demographic would give a more objective view on how these brands are perceived in general. But i think this particular survey is geared more towards how fans of LEGO Star Wars view both individual brands and the combination of the two. And from the looks of it, the survey does that quite thoroughly. Completed the survey by the way, hope it helped a bit with your studies TonyBBB. Do we get to see the final end report?

I'm really sad to hear that skayen! I may have asked something similar in a different topic, but isn't LDraw/MLCad a better equipped program for handling these kind of projects? I admit i don't have a lot of experience with LDD, but i do know that in LDraw you can work with submodels that you can arrange, rotate and edit at will.

Hehehe, couldn't repress a small giggle myself. And the worst part is, before you mentioned the word being spelled wrong, i hadn't even noticed anything! -

Wow, your model is coming along nicely, i really like the greebled look of your city! You're keeping to an all (or mostly) light grey color scheme for your model? You mentioned you weren't that happy yet with your current options for the accompanying SD, so i thought i'd put in a candidate. It may not be of the same quality as the model you're building, but it can hardly be worse than 4492. -
Wow, that's very nice! I think you captured the essence of Nabooan architecture very well with the roundness of your building and the use of arches. Even the plants growing up the walls and the flower beds at the windows are just like i remember Theed from Episode I. The smooth tiling of the street also really fits well with the overall scene, but i'm not sure i'm that fond of the lamp posts though. They look very much like oldfashioned style European lamp posts and the black comes across a bit strong against the tans, browns and greys. Maybe you could fashion some brown or tan colored Nabooan style lamp posts that blend with the environment a bit more? Overall i want to compliment you on a very nice build, and a very nice presented action scene. Well done!

We all know that Star Wars LEGO is expensive, and for various reasons there are huge regional differences in prices as well. However, with the new summerwave of sets i had the impression that they were extraordinarely expensive, even more so than usual. So i commented on the new sets accordingly. When price became yet again the subject of a discussion in one of the new product reviews, i set out to prove the supposed mark up in retail prices by comparing this years sets to last years sets. I have to admit, i was surprised by the results to say the least and thought it would be interesting to share them with you. For comparison i added not just the normal price per part ratio, but also took the number of minifigs into consideration. Not knowing the official value of a minifig, i added columns for compensating for the value of 1 euro per minifig, 2 euro per minifig and 3 euro per minifig. I used the Dutch prices in Euro, so the results may vary for other countries and currencies. However i don't think that will influence the overall conclusion all that much: among individual sets there are good deals and (rather) bad deals, but on average the price per piece ratio has remained pretty much constant over the past few years. I for one won't be so quick to be judgemental about prices again before i check the facts. -
What a great creation! It's wonderfully detailed, but even with all the weapons you still made it look adorable! Well done rongYIREN!

Outstanding review Kiel, i so much enjoyed reading it! Not only is it very well written, i am also very impressed by the quality of your photography. My thoughts about the set: The Gungan Sub is a very curvey design and i think the designers at TLC did a very good job at getting the overall shape right. I can even forgive the small gaps along the outer edge, because i don't think another solution with existing parts would have looked that much smoother or better. The mini sub may not be very movie accurate, but it's a creative way to add some extra play value to the set without compromising the overall looks of the design. Let's be frank. In my opinion both the character Jar Jar and the kind of humor he brings to the Star Wars genre movies is as lame as it gets. At least with battle droids i can imagine that they can be programmed without an annoying dumb personality matrix, leaving only battle programming. But there is just no way i can get excited about either the character or for that matter the minifig of Jar Jar. In contrast, i think both Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are nice figures, though except for some minor details not too different from recently released earlier versions. But i think all will agree with me that there is one minifig in this set to really be excited about: Queen Amidala. Superbly sculpted new molds for the hair and dress, amazingly detailed prints. In one word, beautiful! Do i think the set is worth the official retail price of 74,99 EUR? Not really. It's a lot of money for just 465 pieces, and the Gungan Sub as a vehicle never appealed to me enough to see myself swoosing this LEGO version through my living room. Let alone paying the full retail price for this set just to get the Queen Amidala minifig, which i absolutely adore.

While the quest for accuracy and perfection has its own appeal, these chibi models do take the seriousness down a notch or too and add a comical note to these two classic fighters for a change. They certainly made me smile, so well done on these fun creations!

Very nice and professional review Masked Builder, thanks a lot for putting in the effort and posting it here! My thoughts on the set: The escape pod has a nice and decent design, it looks like what it is supposed to be. But on the other hand, it doesn't really stand out in my collection either. The little speeder is a nice extra, but too small to be taken seriously in my opinion. I am a bit jealous of your dewback though, would've been nice to have that included instead of the speeder. Four minifigs is nice enough for a set this small though. R2-D2 is nothing special, but C-3PO has a nice new print on both the body and the head. I'm not sure what to think of the Sand Troopers though. Their exquisitly detailed printing puts them among the finest minifigs recently released, but the sandy spots only makes them suitable for a desert environment which limits their use. The official retail price in the Netherlands is 27,99 EUR. That's rather a lot for a mere 137 parts and 4 minifigs. I received this set as a gift and i enjoyed it, but i don't think i would have spent quite that much money on this set myself.

A big congrats for getting this project through to the review board! From what i read it has been a bumpy road for this project, so that makes this victory taste all the sweeter I wasn't familiar with the project, nor am i with the game for that matter. But the concepts you presented do look very nice and well thought out. So my compliments for that also! I really hope your project makes it through to the product stage

I'm not sure if i commented on the city part of your design before, but i too think it looks way too smooth, especially compared to the latest reference picture you provided. Personally i would prefer a much more greebled look. Looking at the pictures of your model, i'm sure it could be rebuilt in such a way that it has a greebled appearance while still keeping the trenches. But in the end it comes down to a matter of personal taste, so it's really up to you to change it or leave it as it is.

[MOC] Yet another Super Star Destroyer Executor...
DFOL replied to Bob De Quatre's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I noticed you guys use LDD to build these. Unfortunately, i never really figured out the ins and outs of that program, but i do know that Ldraw/MLcad offers some very handy tools for submodels, grouping, rotating and moving submodels/groups, etc. Wouldn't that program be easier to build your models in? By the way, i really like the improved angles on the tail section. It looks much better this way, except maybe for the 2 or 3 studs sticking out at an odd angle at the corner on the rear. Good luck on your project! -
What a great way to introduce yourself to EB StanleyRos! Considering you only used parts from the 9493 X-Wing, i think you did quite an impressive job creating such a good looking snowspeeder! If you can do this much with the parts from just one set, i'd love to see what you can do with more parts at your disposal

DFOL replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Star Wars
The answer to your first question is yes. I noticed while building the UCS Imperial Shuttle that there were subtle but quite noticeable color differences in the white pieces. Some pieces seemed almost a little opaque whereas others appeared more solid. In the finished model the differences weren't all that noticeable so i wasn't bothered enough to complain about it. But i did cause me to raise an eyebrow, quality control definately did a poor job here. As for the answer to your second question, the system scaled Vader's TIE Advanced from episode 4 matches up with the new TIE Fighter in certain areas, but differs in other areas. Do they match in size? Pretty well i'd say. And they also share the same color scheme. But they have very different styling in cockpit piece and side panel design. So do they go well together all things considered? For me personally, the differences in design do matter, but i think you will have to decide for yourself. -
It's weird how a design that has always been associated with the Jedi can suddenly look so gloomy and menacing when done in all black with Imperial logo's. Awesome job jmagaletta, i'd say this one is the best looking of the series yet!

I like the concept of a clone training camp, and you got quite a promising start there already Alexandr! Especially the training droids made me laugh out loud, i can see the poor droids being shot to pieces all day long. You asked for suggestions and i can certainly think of some possibilities to add to your scene. Assault course, no training camp should be without Armory, to store all the weapons Barracks, the clones have to get some sleep sooner or later In general i would suggest making the roads just a little bit smaller so you have more functional use of your terrain. I know it's a WIP so you were probably going to add these later, but at this point the scene is missing some smaller stuff like lamp posts, fences, maybe some crates and boxes stacked in a corner, more plants, other minor detailing like that. And some more trainees would make the scene come alive a lot more. The best of luck with your project, and more importantly: have fun!

It is this piece, tilted 90 degrees forward.

I have no idea what that playset could be, but on closer inspection i did see a prototype for a Seperatist Super Tank that sparked my interest. It would be nice to see that one released!

Thank you so much for doing this review jmagaletta. Let me start out by saying i really like this set. The only real critisism i have on the model is that they scaled it down way too much, it should be more or less the size of the UCS Millennium Falcon instead of a regular TIE Fighter. Other than that i'd say it's a beautiful design that is spot on to how the ship appears in the game. The minifigures are also absolute must-haves for me. Especially Darth Malgus is an exceptionally well made figure with his new armor design, new cape and beautiful printing, but also the Sith Troopers are really nice. Like all the sets in the summer wave, this one is no exception in that it seems to have an extraordinarily high retail price. I won't go into an extensive price rant, we have had enough of those to know that Star Wars LEGO is expensive in general and in some regions even more so for various known and unknown reasons. But the recent price developement does have me worried a bit where this is going. This ship is definately on my wanted list, but i'll probably spend some time hunting for a good deal before i pick it up.

Wow, you've been busy Brickdoctor! And you did a great job, it looks awesome!

Your latest solution for the micro Star Destroyer is very creative! The fact that the underside of the plates are showing on the sides and that there are some gaps where they meet in the middle may be a bit less elegant, but 1) you achieved a very nice wedge shape, 2) it's the correct size and 3) it's in light grey. All things considered i think this is as good as it gets in this scale, so very nicely done!
