The Visual Dictionary

Recommended Posts

I ordered mine from a local book store yesterday. It will take longer to get here but it's cheaper and I'm not in a rush to get it anyway. I found a review of the book on YouTube last night. Sorry I don't have a link but if you just search Lego star wars the visual dictionary you should get it because there's only one. It is a litttle kid reviewing it but he seems to be well educated. He shows you pretty much every page which is cool

Thanks for the tip. Checked it out and it was really great. He shows all of the book and shows you how easy it is to remove the minifigure. Once again thanks for the site. It can be found if you type in 'Lego Star Wars Visual Dictionary Overveiw and Review First on Youtube', and yes there is a spelling mistake in the title (Overveiw [sic]). The review goes for about 8mins. If you haven't bought the book yet, then check it out.

I am sorry to say this but I am a bit unsatisfied that they often use the same photo as from the box/manual. Actually, I already don't like it that much that todays Lego boxes have the same image all over and on the manual. (And the angle and light is sometimes not that good) I prefer the old times when TLC provided us with different set pictures and I found it a bit lame that the book uses so many common images. They should have made new photos. This is for the fans, isn't it?

I got the visual dictionary and it does look pretty nice. But it really LACKS clone wars. They had the entire clone wars section covered in like 6 pages... I was hoping they might have the Venator crusier on 2 double pages just like the Imperial Star Destroyer.. but no they don't. They have really detailed information on sets other than clone wars, & ucs.

But they did had some errors on the front page with the sets listed as 1-2 sets seems to be in wrong spot or appears twice. Example would be the Naboo Starfighter w/vulture droid.

Just got my two books (The LEGO Book and the Visual Dictionary) today - they shipped it on Saturday, two days before it was even released in the US! :oh:

I can't wait to read them! They're very heavy and thick. I'll be looking at these occasionally for a few years at the least! :sweet:

I'll try to take some pictures soon for all of you who don't have one to enjoy.

I did enjoy the book a lot, but this is something I actually agree with a lot. I think they could have gone out of their way to take some more unique photo's of the sets, rather than just using so many stock images. Not a huge deal, it's still a very interesting book, but it does feel quite lazy.

No matter which sets they decided to highlight, some people would still disagree.

It's kind of a lose-lose situation.

Let's not whine over what each of us would have liked to see.

But instead let's rejoice over what we've actually gotten.

Show a little gratitude people.

A lot of people put a lot of effort into this book.

Thanks for being the voice of reason Kim.

I'd like to asure everyone that every pic from 1999 to 2002, and some beyond, are all original/non-stock photos.

What a coincidence.

I got mine today and I like it!

I don't mind the known pictures and highlighting of some sets. The pictures make me feel nostalgic since I don't keep all the boxes.

Highlighting all the sets would mean doubling the cost (at least) and everybody knows what happens here when prices are discussed. ; raging and ranting till berserkiness. (I know it's probably not even a word, but most of you will get it)

I also got my book personally signed by one of the developers of the book. I can post a pictures later. I really enjoyed it. The 501st in coustume weren't there. :hmpf_bad: I'm debating wheter or not to open the Vader. :sceptic:

Sorry for the double post but I just found something out. The Luke and Clones on the bottom corners move when you flip the pages! The clones march and Luke slashes his saber around.

The Woodfield LEGO Store (outside Chicago, IL) had 5 members turn up from the 501st.

Darth Vader, Captain Rex, a female Jedi, Anakin, and a Stormtrooper were all in attendance! Needless to say, there were a lot of pictures taken by people, and the books seemed to be flying out of the store!

I think this book is a great collection of all the Star Wars LEGO sets available. I just don't know why they call it a dictionary?

Just got back from the LEGO Store in Valley Fair shopping center (Santa Clara, California)!

Two stormtroopers, a female Jedi, a female Rebel pilot, and a really cool looking silver and green clone trooper were there.

I got a picture taken with one of the stormies, and got an autograph in my Visual Dictionary! :sweet:

I also won a chrome Vader () by answering "Made Windu" on a question. The questions were so easy!

However, my chrome Vader is missing some chrome on one of the legs (chrome silver shows through). It doesn't bother me that much though, since it was free. :sweet:

Overall, this was the largest LEGO event that I went to so far, and it was very fun and exciting (answering the question and meeting the 501st members).

I got a Separatist Shuttle ($30 USD), chrome gold minifig keychain ($5), the firefighter and police impulse sets ($7 USD), and a chrome silver stormtrooper magnet ($10)!

I also got some free things: a poster (will post pics later), two Visual Dictionary stickers (Jango Fett and Celebration Luke), some cards advertising the Clone Wars TV series (Ahsoka, Cad Bane, Embo [bounty hunter], and Sugi [bounty hunter]), a Star Wars: The Clone Wars Republic Heroes advertisement card (comes out 10/6/09), two LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary activity books, and a business card of a 501st member (which someone just left on a table,).

I shall upload all of my pics to Brickshelf soon, and post an overview of the event for all of you to enjoy.

Thanks for posting link. It was a nice little surprize. I was there from the beginnig to end with my brother. The manager just gave my brother and me one. I think he might have been a AFOL, he knew I was. He asked some hard questions like "What's the trash compactor munber?" and "What were the odds 3P0 told to Solo?" This one teen knew it. Nerd! The 501st members weren't there. The manager was joking about airport security. I also got at lest 5 of the DK posters and one of the trading card things. That was all they were giving out, beside Vaders. One question was "How mant TIE escorts did Vader have?" The kid got a Vader for that. At least I became friends with the manager. The guy who signed my book's name was Craig. I can't read his signature. He also drew Han Solo's blaster in my book too. When He signed my book I hadn't paid for it yet. He also helped with Tantive IV.

He's the signature I got.

...let's rejoice over what we've actually gotten.

Show a little gratitude people.

A lot of people put a lot of effort into this book.

They didn't apparently put enough effort into it to do an adequate job proofreading for errors. The Visual Dictionary series books aren't really very informative and aren't noted for being useful reference sources. They're more like coffee table books. Defending errors in such a book is unjustifiable given that there are people being paid to oversee and edit it. Every error they make in a book with such limited content as the Visual Dictionary series is all the worse.

My critique of the book

Accuracy: ** (out of ****)

Content: * (out of ****)

Layout: *** (out of ****)

Quality: ** (out of ****)

Overall: ** (out of ****)

Recommendation: For the content, no; for the mini-figure, yes

The guy who signed my book's name was Craig.

Funny that there is no-one called Craig in the credits of the book!

Did he say how he was involved?

He said he worked for DK and helped plan the book out. He provided infomation for the book as well. His name could have been something else. I can't make anything out of his signature. Yesterday there were tons of Lego Stores with poeple signing books. I'm pretty sure that many of the peopling signing the books played a petty role in it's production.

Wow, the guy who signed your book is really good at drawing Han Solo's blaster, JCC1004!

I got my book signed by a stormtrooper by the name of TK3390 (I also took a picture with him):

May the Dark Side be with you :)

And two stickers:
