Keymonus Posted May 22, 2020 (edited) Welcome to the Gran Military Encyclopedia of Oleon! Here you can admire the might of our soldiers, from their boots to the tip of their plumes. This thread aims to collect some information about the glorious Army of Oleon: during the years you saw several units of our Nation, from colonial militias to the ubiquitous line infantry, from the famed Mousquetaires du Roi to semi-legal Volunteer Corps. Here you will find a collection of them, with a brief description and the glorious history of their deeds. Most of the units depicted exist in EGS terms, but this is not an absolute requirement: if you want to show the border cavalry of the Varcosian Border, the Royal Guard of Granoleon or other units way far from the Brick Seas, you are welcome to do it! For the citizens of Oleon who want to contribute: please follow the general outline described in the spoiler Spoiler unit name: include the unit size if pertinent (e.g. 22nd company of line infantry, 1st regiment), otherwise just go for the name (e.g. Astrapi militia) unit type/specifications: line infantry, light infantry/chasseurs, light infantry/tirailleurs, light infantry/musketeers, naval infantry, grenadiers, militia, light cavalry/hussars... picture (1 picture on a white, plain background; if you want, more pictures of an officer, bannerman, of a drummer or of another similar figure) uniform description: e.g. standard blue uniform with white trousers, shako and white epaulets... equipment description: e.g. standard infantry flintlock musket, pike and sword, musket and saber recruitment center: New Oleon, Granoleon, Western Oleon, Breshaun... unit history and description: campaigns: both inside our timeframe and geographic area (so challenges, explorations, colonization... e.g. the Battle of Isla de Medio, Charlatan Bay civil war...) and conflicts in the lore but outside our scenario (Juniper War and older conflicts, Campaigns in New Oleon or on the Western Border...) Optional: more photos if appropriate, a link to the unit thread or to notable events involving it unit motto (if it has one) Vive le Roi! Unit index Militia Units recruited locally, both in the motherland and in the colonies. Formed by willing citizens or peasants, the main function of a militia is the defending a city or a province from both foreign aggressions and internal menaces, such as bandits or riots. These non-professional soldiers often wear odd uniforms, strongly influenced by local elements. Although they are often considered poor fighters, militiamen proved their worth in several occasions, especially during Corrish invasions and along the turbulent Western Border 1ere Compagnie Milice Coloniale de Fort Arltrees Tyree'dee Warriors 4e Regiment de Triallieur Dionysian Line infantry The backbone of Madrician armies. These soldiers march in a line towards the enemies and, when they can almost see the white of their eyes, they fire a barrage of bullets with their flintlock musket. The Thin Blue Line (or Red, Green or Yellow, according to the nation) is considered capable of enduring any attack, from cavalry charges to screaming hordes of natives. Although these units look very similar, training, discipline and experience make the difference in a battle: the victory will always belong to the soldiers who can fire faster and better, who can keep the formation regardless fear and losses, who can bayonet-charge the enemy even under a rain of bullets! Légion de Mardierennes, 1ere Compagnie La Légion Etrangère Infanterie de Ligne, 3e Compagnie de New Oleon Infanterie de Ligne, 3eme ("du Roi") Armée de l'Orient Light infantry Traditional doctrines consider light infantry only an auxiliary force to "true" infantry, with the only function of screening allied units and harassing enemy forces. However, especially in the unusual colonial scenario, these light infantry proved to be by far more useful. These soldiers are trained to move and fight in small, agile units, acting independently far from the main body of the army: therefore, they can easily fight in woods or jungles, where the rigid line infantry doctrines would be useless. Light infantry is sometimes equipped with rifles or carabines, rather than with long muskets, and is often employed in difficult missions, such as long-range recognition or raids in areas controlled by the enemies. Volunteer Expeditionary Force 4eme Infanterie du Bois 1ere compagnie chasseurs coloniaux de Astrapi Tirailleurs de Guelph Chasseurs a pied 11eme Compagnie 1ere Légion Pénale Jiangkai tirailleurs Jiangkai chasseurs The Sisters of Our Lady of Artemis Huntresses of Artemis Grenadiers Elite soldiers, trained to throw explosive grenades against the enemies. Despite the name, these soldiers usually fight with muskets and represent a sort of crack force on the battlefield: these soldiers are imposing, aggressive and skillful. No matter if grenadiers are attacking you with muskets, grenades or bayonets... the best option for you is running away! 4eme Pompiers "Les Feuyens" Heavy infantry Until the end of the Forty-Nine Years War, heavy infantry dominated the battlefield: muskets were still slow to load and inaccurate, so battles were often won by pikes, swords and halberds. Even if these units may look antiquated, with their iron morions and heavy armors, they still represent a threat on the battlefield: if they can get close enough to the enemy, they will likely prevail in melee combat. Moreover, armors proved to be very effective in the fights against the natives: their arrows and wooden sticks, in fact, can't simply pierce iron plates! Knights Treasurer Foot Soldier Pioneers/Military engineers Building forts and ramparts, but also roads and bridges, are complex tasks that require specialized soldiers: although they are not properly a fighting force, engineers are often determinant for the victory. Moreover, they often build "civilian" infrastructures in newly colonized areas, therefore contributing to the development of the Empire. The sappers, a specialized branch of the corps, have a completely different role: they must open a safe passage across enemy defenses, a dangerous job that often involves fightings with the enemies. Ingènieurs du Roi, 2eme Compagnie Breshaun Sapeurs-Pompiers Intelligence and transmissions Corps de Transmissions Police and Inquisition La Force Publique La Gendarmerie Royale Naval infantry/Marines Naval infantry and marines represent the joining link between naval and land-based warfare. These units are trained to fight on the decks of ships, but also for landing operations: these brave soldiers go ashore with little rowing boats, often under enemy fire, to conquer strategic positions (such as ports or coastal batteries) or to secure a safe bridgehead for large scale operations. Moreover, marines are also an excellent light infantry, since each platoon and even every single soldier is used to move and operate independently from the others: a forced choice, since tide and wind may scatter a small landing force along miles of the coast! Troupes de Marine Fusiliers Marins Light cavalry Derived from the nomadic raiders of the westernmost nations and from the tribal cavalry of Guelph, it represented for a long time something unusual in Madrician nations. Due to its excellent mobility, this cavalry is perfect for exploration, attacks to enemy supply lines, or chasing down routed enemies. While using these units for a frontal attack against squares of infantry is probably a suicidal move, light cavalry is useful on the battlefield too, for example, to charge moving or unprepared enemy units: even if musket and bayonet give a theoretical advantage to foot soldiers, the mere sight of spears and swords approaching at a frightening speed may easily make him run away! Chevau-légers Lanciers Méharistes, 1e New Olean Compagnie Hussars D'Oleon Chevau-leger Lanciers de New Oleon Heavy cavalry Heirs of the ancient knights, who dominated the battlefields for centuries (from the end of the Empire to the War that Time Forgot, but also later), these soldiers have a simple task on the battlefield: run directly towards the enemies and crack their formation with mere brute force. Even if the golden age of the knights is over, a charge of heavy cavalry can still decide the outcome of the battle. With heavy swords and imposing horses, heavy cavalry smashes into enemy units, opening its way with cold steel; despite this, several soldiers are equipped also with pistols, or short carabines particularly useful for close-quarter fights. Courassiers Mounted infantry Mounted infantry, as the name suggests, is something between infantry and cavalry: these soldiers ride small and fast horses, similar to the ones of light cavalry, but fight mainly on foot. Due to their mobility and versatility, mounted infantry represents a useful resource on the battlefield, but also for irregular and "less honorable" tasks, such as hunting for elusive enemies, raiding enemy territory, or even repressing riots. Dragoons Artillery Probably the strongest argument you can bring to a discussion. Artillery alone can win battles, breaking enemy attacks or weakening defensive lines. Artillery is divided into several sub-specialties, such as foot artillery, siege artillery, or horse artillery. The underlying idea, however, is always the same: take a cannon, bring it near enough to the enemies, and tear them apart with a rain of fire and iron! Keymonus Posted May 22, 2020 (edited) Unit name: Legion de Mardierennes, 1ere Compagnie Type: Line infantry Uniform description: Blue jacket with yellow facings and white epaulets; white trousers; standard army shako with the unit’s badge Equipment description: Standard infantry flintlock musket; bayonet or saber for melee combat Recruitment center: Breshaun Unit history and description: The last two years represented a harsh awakening for the Empire of Mardier. The colonial army, the navy, the Bumble Tuna commercial fleet… everything crumbled under the enemy cannonballs. Terraversa and Isla de Medio were lost, and entire units simply ceased to exist. With Eslandola ruling the waves, hundreds of soldiers, functionaries and civilians were left behind. Some of them accepted to remain under the rule of their enemies, while several others resettled in the near colonies of Corrington and Oleon. In Breshaun, a new company was formed with expatriated Mardierians, mainly from the garrisons of Terraversa and Isla de Medio, but also some of the few survivors of the Admiral Cadiz's expedition to Charlatan Bay, recently evacuated by Tristan Rimbaud. The members of the Legiòn de Mardierennes (Legion of Mardierians) are equipped with the same weapons of the regular army, but wear peculiar uniforms and are led by Mardierian officers. For better integration with other units, the Marderian Legionnaires received some weeks of training, with firing in shooting range, training in battle formations and, quite obviously, lessons of Oleander language and culture, especially for officers. The Mardierian Legion hasn't been employed in large military operations yet, but it should be considered an elite unit, due to the previous "training on the battlefield" of all its members. Even if the loyalty of all the soldiers is certain, this unit should be employed with attention to their background... never asking them, for example, to shoot against Mardierian Royal Army, and never deploying them less than 100 miles away from anyone wearing the green! Campaigns: Formed with veterans of Mardierian civil war, Terraversa revolution, Isla de Medio war and Charlatan Bay occupation. Individual elements fought in Charlatan Bay Civil War. Second Terraversan War, Battle of the Beaches and Siege of King’s Port. As a result, they relocated to the Holy City in Granoleon, where they were regarded as one more annoyance by Calida. When Padre François was promoted to Abbé for recovering the lightning bolt of Zeus, he was given command of the Order, who relocated to Astrapi to guard the new Treasury of Hades the Harvester. When it became clear that heresy and heathen practices abounded across the Brick Seas, the now Abbé François had the Monastic Order chartered as a Knightly Brotherhood instead. Khorne Posted May 23, 2020 Unit name: Chevau-légers Lanciers - Light Cavalry Lancers, or the "Uhlans" Type: Light Cavalry Uniform description: Dark blue double breasted jacket with gold plastron at the front, completed with white epaulettes, matching gloves and sabre belt. Dark blue trousers and octagonal peaked cap emblazoned with the unit's arms. Equipment description: Long-shafted cavalry lance with penants. Flintlock pistol and saber for close-quarter combat after the initial charge. Recruitment center: None, particular: Oléon proper, mostly centered in cities with a strong Ghaskinite or Southern migrants' influence. Some colonies have followed suit, but these are few and most depend on units shipped from the motherland. New Oléon relies more on locally recruited desert cavalry. Unit history and description: While the Northern Empires have revolutionized infantry warfare over the past decades with more powerful weaponry and new ingenious tactics and drills, the cavalry branch of their armies mostly adheres to the doctrines of feudal times past when heavy knights dominated the battlefield: barge into enemy lines. Over time, knights evolved into heavy cavalry such as cuirassiers to fulfill this role. The cost to outfit a cuirassier is however quite considerable and the heydays of heavy cavalry charges have gone by, due to the ever-increasing strength of the line infantry on the battlefield. Their armor wears them down in some cases, making them too slow and the dominance of noblemen in such units makes them too valuable to "throw away" on the battlefield. Increasing contact between Oléon and some of the southern nations, be it through trade, diplomacy or immigration, offered some new insights and angles on how cavalry can be used. Whereas the northern nations were more dependent on their heavy cavalry, most southern armies get their strength from various swift light cavalry units; often tribal levies serving the crown. They harass supply lines, screen the movements of the main army from the enemy and can cover lots of terrain for scouting. On the battlefield their light nature makes them excel at crossing the distance to the enemy line at great speeds and crash into them with deadly efficiency. Hit-and-run tactics are their true strength. The army of Oléon was impressed by the capabilities of such units and hired Cossacks and other tribesmen to train Oléonese cavalrymen in such ways. As such, the units came to be known colloquially as uhlans or 'warriors', copying the ethymology of the South. Apart from their name, the uniform as well was directly inspired by the dress of some Cossack tribes or Ghaskinites in general. The flat visored cap is a staple head piece amongst many Ghaskinites and exists in many different forms. The well-know and ubiquitous shako is a similar derivation of the Ghaskinite cap. The ranks of the Uhlans are usually filled with commoners, with a great sense for adventure and skillful horsemanship. People with Ghaskinite or Mokolei migrant backgrounds are also drawn to these units by a sense of pride and natural affinity. Campaigns: Motto: No general motto exists, but some units have regimental mottos. "Ride for Ruin and the World's Ending!" is a phrase often yelled before the charge to get the adrenaline flowing. The chant is then answered by the men, screaming "DEATH!" More about the unit:
Khorne Posted May 23, 2020 Unit name: Dragoons Type: (Medium) Cavalry / Mounted Infantry Uniform description: Dark blue double breasted jacket with gold plastron at the front, white gloves and sabre belt. White trousers and black riding boots. Black helmet with the unit's arms. Equipment description: Carbine and saber. Recruitment center: Can be found all over Oléon's domains. Unit history and description: The Oleonder Dragoons are an infamous cavalry force, known for their deeds both on and next to the battlefield. They are for most part made up from the youngest sons of the lower nobility or otherwise wealthy mercantile families. These youngsters have little claim to the sometimes vast riches of their families and as such, they search their fame and fortune elsewhere. Whereas members of the higher classes often enlist in the regular heavy cavalry or infantry officer corps, these men find they lust for adventure satiated in the ranks of the Dragoons. Somewhere in between cavalry and infantry, Dragoons are a versatile unit, righteously feared on the battlefield. Due to their versatile nature, Dragoons are also oft employed as a police force or occupation troop. Many a savage tale besmudging the reputation of the Dragoons stems from their sometimes abysmal and tyranical behaviour towards the subjected populace. Khorne Posted May 23, 2020 (edited) Unit name: La Légion Etrangère - Foreign Legion Type: Elite and highly adaptable line infantry Officer (l.) and private (r.) Uniform description: Dark blue coat with red facings and red epaulettes. Red trousers and shako with red plume and brass unit markings. Variations exist and some regiments wear a red-plumed tricorne instead. Red trousers and accents are the main identifiers of Légionnaires. Equipment description: Standard issue musket. Recruitment center: Recruitment stations can be found all over the Empire, but all volunteers or recruits are always sent to training camps in Guelph to complete their training and as such, Guelph can be seen as a home. Unit history and description: Many flock to the banner of mighty Oleon, including those of foreign nations. Ready to prove their worth to the Oleon cause - or flee from trouble in their own country, they can enlist in the Oleon Foreign Legion, no questions asked. Their loyalty and service is eventually rewarded with Oleander citizenship and land, but the road leading there is arduous and many fall before they make it to the end. The Légion Etrangère as it is known in Oleonese is an elite unit, hardened by a brutal training regimen and iron discipline. They fulfill the most dangerous missions and attacks, so that 'true' Oleander blood doesn't have to be spilled. These soldiers are marked by the various red trims on their uniforms and shako. Popular opinion has it that the red color was chosen to highten their visibility on the battlefield and so draw attention to themselves, away from the actual Oleon line infantry. Keymonus Posted May 24, 2020 (edited) Unit name: Volunteer Expeditionary Force Type: Light Infantry/ Franc Tireurs Officer (l.) and private (r.) Uniform description: Dark blue, single-breasted coat (with black epaulets for the officers); black trousers; black tricorne (shako for the officers). Equipment description: Standard infantry flintlock musket (ordnance); actually also a variety of different firearms (such as Mardierian and Corrish muskets, hunting rifles, flintlock pistols) and melee weapons (sabers, cutlasses, tomahawks and knives). Recruitment center: Unknown. According to rumors, a secret training camp in the jungles of Ile de Zeus, not far from Astrapi mines. Unit history and description: Oleander forces played an important role in Charlatan Bay civil war, but any involvement of the Empire was officially denied. For this reason, the soldiers were organized in a semi-clandestine "volunteer corps", with no official unit designation, badges or ensigns. The mission was a real nightmare, with the soldiers sent directly in the middle of a civil war, supporting one of the factions in the difficult task of restoring order on a devastated pirate island. Despite their formal role of military instructors and advisors, the "regulars" participated in several fightings, alone or side-to-side with the local militia: due to their discipline and good equipment, in fact, they were often used as a crack force or for particularly complex maneuvres, such as flanking attacks. The campaign was long and difficult, especially due to the presence of civilians: one of the main successes of the volunteers was the capture of a coastal battery, that allowed the reopening of the port and, as a consequence, the arrival of food supplies for the starving population. More than a year of harsh fightings, including a few pitched battles and countless street fightings, ambushes and raids in enemy strongholds turned these soldiers into veterans, respected by the population and feared by the local gangs. After the victory of Fort Saint Millar and the pacification of Charlatan Bay, Oleander volunteers were largely repatriated; only a little garrison remained in the fort itself, to support the local government and allow a safe return for a contingent, should the situation degenerate. Khorne Posted May 25, 2020 Unit name: Troupes de Marine - Marine Troops (oft referred to as Marsouins or Marsouins Coloniales - Colonial Marines) Type: Highly adaptable marine infantry, often deployed in light infantry roles Standard desert dress (l.) and general dress (r.) Uniform description: Simple dark blue tunic, with single row of buttons. Red sash around waist and white trousers. Headgear is usually a white pith helmet, but can be switched for a red felt chechia cap when deployed in non-desert theatres. Equipment description: Standard issue musket. Recruitment center: While theoretically a Marsouin can be trained anywhere, their home turf is usually considered to be the port cities and naval centers of New Oléon. Unit history and description: The Troupes de Marines of Oléon go a long way back. Originally founded as a unit to help spearhead the annexation of Guelph through sea-to-land action, they later became an established branch of the Oléonese army. The history and habits of the Marsouins are thus closely related to the culture of the Guelph Peninsula. This is most obvious in the unit's battle dress, which consists of a simple blouse and sash, inspired by the dress of native Guelphians. This is topped off with a pith helmet, a recent piece of headwear that helps protect the soldier from the unforgiving sun. When not deployed in traditional Guelphian theatres of war, but rather in the colonies or in northern territories, the Marsouins often switch out their traditional pith helmet for a chechia, a common piece of headwear in Guelph. It's a floppy felt version of the traditional fez and is usually mocked by critics as "the marines' night cap". The Marsouins themselves however, take great pride in the wearing of the chechia and see it as a symbol of their long and heroic history and exemplary of the unique New Oléonese culture, which is a hybrid of traditional Oléonese items and native Guelphian elements and customs. Unlike regular line infantry, Marsouins emphasize dynamic warfare and operate more as fast light infantry; a tradition that is also very common on the Guelphian battle fields - and can be seen as the bridge between army and navy. While their official designation is Troupes de Marine, many outsiders refer to them as Colonial Marines, or Marsouins Coloniales in Oléonese, due to their close link with Guelph - the first colony of Oléon. Marines are usually recruited amongst the port cities of New Oléon and share an affinity for sea and adventure. Despite their somewhat legendary reputation, many of the traditionally conservative "proper" Oléonese look down upon them and see them as "too Guelphian" and loathe their "unorthodox and plebeian" combat doctrines. Ross Fisher Posted May 25, 2020 (edited) An important note on the distinctions between Oleonaise Mounted Units L-R: Knights Treasurer Lancer, Imperial Curassier, RNTC Hussar, Musketeer Dragoon While various terms have been used indiscriminately about Oleonaise Mounted Units, it is worthwhile noting the distinctions between these terms, and the reality that they reflect. "Lancer" refers to a cavalry trooper armed with a lance. They are typically, but not exclusively, equipped with a cuirass. They represent the heavy cavalry of the army. "Curassier" refers to an armoured cavalry trooper equipped with a saber and pistols. They number among the best of Oleon's shock troops. "Hussar" refers to an unarmoured cavalry trooper, employed in a light cavalry role. They are recognisable by their pelisse and braided jackets. Be aware that this is distinct from Great Alliance States Winged Hussars, who function as Heavy Cavalry. "Dragoon" refers to a mounted infantryman, equipped with either a musket or cavalry carbine. These troops can rapidly redeploy in order to change the flow of a battle. Edited May 28, 2020 by Ross Fisher

Breeches of any color along with a shako. Some shakos are adorned with gold braids or larger feathers. Equipment Description: Flintlock Pistol and Saber Recruitment center: Oleon Proper Unit history and description: While Hussars have been around for quite some time, the folklore for these dashing cavalrymen really took shape during the Juniper War. They were regarded as skirmishers and due to their courage, though some say ego, they made headway into Corrish lines causing disruption while the main forces came from behind. Some accounts say that as many as ten Hussars were enough to cause a big enough disruption to Corrish soldiers that they were flee. Other accounts describe how Hussars would inscribe their musket ball only for enemy officers and when they shot it, it would direct itself toward their target. Whatever these stories, one thing was for certain, they were used in strategic ways that enabled victories during this time. When not on the battlefield they were found frequently in taverns and public squares, telling stories of their dashing adventures and womanizing to boot. Hussars were known for their flamboyant dress and large mustaches which enabled them to bring a certain charisma to their stories. While open to all manner of class and status, most hussar groups had minor nobles who were set to inherit nothing from their family or adventurous commoners looking to make a name for themselves. While engineers, specialized craftsmen and similar figures are part of all the Halosian armies (and, actually of everything bigger and more organized than a war band) since the time of the Empire, organized units of pioneers, sappers and engineers are a far more recent concept: these units appeared for the first time a few decades ago, and even today they often operate side-by-side with civilian personnel. During the Juniper War, the Deuxieme Compagnie was always on the frontline, literally building the road towards victory. During the conflict, the advantages of a completely military engineer corps became clear, since the Ingènieurs du Roi had often to repel enemy attacks while building a bridge or a barricade. Moreover, these soldiers were sometimes tasked with the opposite mission, opening a safe path across passive defenses or even destroying fortifications under enemy fire. After the war, the Deuxieme Compagnie participated in the reconstruction of the Juniper Province; a few years later, it was sent in the colonies, where it contributed to the development of local infrastructures. In peace or in war, the engineers of the 2nd company always gave its contribution to the glory of the Empire, both with their muskets and with their tools! Campaigns: Juniper War, Colonization of Le Bellan, Second Terraversan War (Battle of the Beaches, Siege of King’s Port) Unit motto: Essayons! (Let us try!) Keymonus Posted June 7, 2020 Wonderful units and descriptions! @blackdeathgr, could you split them (with no hurry at all!) in three posts?
blackdeathgr Posted June 7, 2020 (edited) Unit Name: 4eme Pompiers aka "Les Feuyens" Unit type/specifications: Grenadiers Officer (l), private (r) Uniform Description: Private, blue jacket with black, gold and white facings and white epaulets, light gray trousers, standard army tricorn. Officer, blue jacket with white facings, light gray trousers, bicorn with red feathers on top. Equipment Description: Private, defensive or offensive grenades, small knife. Officer, sabre and/or pistol defensive (l), offensive (r) grenade Recruitment center: Oleon mainland and Colonies Unit history and description: The use of gunpowder for anything smaller than a cannon, brought changes in many armies composition. Oleon, being at the forefront of the military breakthrough, decided that a dedicated grenadier proper unit was highly useful, so "Les Feuyens" were created. Not many sane men want to be part of this unit (for reasons we all understand), but then again, who wants perfectly sane people handling explosives? The good food served to this unit is surely another enticement for young Oleonaises to join. In peace time, you will usually find these units stationed close to fortifications or way outside of any settlement. Rudimentary precautions are used such as no smoking (pipe or whatever) and as an observer will clearly notice, there is a lack of epaulletes in either privates or officers as were deemed too flammable. So were the feathers on the officers hats but themselves decided to keep them - always red, in honor the "Feu" eternal. Campaigns: Juniper War, The Grand Defense of Oleon Unit motto: "Tout brûle" (everything burns) for the 4eme, "Le feu nettoie" (fire cleanses) for the 5eme Edited June 7, 2020 by blackdeathgr

If someone else can do it for me (or at least give me a hint how to split them) I will be glad. So it did that to me. I think it’s forces combine posting if you do it in quick succession. Maybe just copy and paste the new post underneath one of these posts. I had to do that in order for it not to merge
