Oh definitely. Supergirl flopping is another nail into the LEGO DC coffin, and a pretty big one at that :jollyroger: No way MoT is getting anything beyond Fortnite skins. At this point, we just have to accept that this theme will be at least 90% Batmobiles from now on.

I hate the state of DC right now. We’re arguably in a much worse position now cinematically than we were back at the start of the DCEU. At least that franchise was commercially successful initially. I doubt Lego will stop making Batman sets because he’s still the man, but yeah I would be very surprised if we get a full non-Batman wave ever again, that is, unless miracle happens and the DCU or the next reboot explodes to pre Endgame MCU levels

Best bet is man of tomorrow, and once batman starts appearing maybe then. For me, Batmans just fine.

Just seen the new leak for Lanterns

Spoiler

AHHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

I don’t know what’s worse. That they’re sliming my goat episode one, or that it sounds like they’re doing it in a way that makes the Parrallax-Rebirth storyline impossible.

Save us Jessica Cruz. You’re the only other good lantern who’s potential DCU future is not compromised by this god awful short-sighted decision.

I am really hoping it’s just a decent John show at this point with good flashbacks Hal in the 2016 storyline. But man, does this eliminate a whole lot of good adaptation possibilities. Most of them in fact.

For the record I really don’t want to be negative. But man they are not making it easy to be positive with every bit of news that comes out.

Gunn, if you pressure Lego to make a comic-based GL mech with Guy Gardner and/or John Stewart against Cyborg Superman, Zod or Sinestro for a MOT tie in then all will be forgiven.

Lego was right to do what they did to this theme. DC doesn't deserve sets anymore.

Spoiler

I mean, come on. I think we all thought this was going to be the stupid "Hal becomes parralax at the end of the season and it's really mostly John taking Kyle's place in a Kyle story" plot, but it's significantly worse than that. We're just merking Hal in the first episode? And leakers are saying it's not a fakeout, he's really dead.

Excuse my ignorance, but is there a specific reason why

Spoiler

the storylines you guys brought up can‘t happen with a different Lantern rather than Hal? I know, their personalities and backstories are different, but as a non-comic reader I could see them giving these Hal-centric stories to other Lanterns, be it John, Guy, Simon, or Jessica.

As funny as

Spoiler

Jon becoming Parralax

would be, we're not talking specifically about it being bad that they can't adapt that storyline. It's just the storyline we were expecting them to adapt, not that we wanted it off the bat. I can't speak for CC but personally I hate that storyline because

Spoiler

I like Hal. Which is the whole problem- they're killing off THE green lantern in the first episode. It'd be like if our first live-action Captain America in 15 years died in the first episode so Bucky could be the only cap, or if they did an iron man show where Tony dies in the first episode and it's just about Rhodey. (And in the latter case, if RDJ had been voicing him in the cartoons for a decade but when it comes to live action they end up casting him as Arno Stark). I don't dislike Rhodey or Bucky, but if I hadn't seen Steve or Tony onscreen in ages, that's who I'd want to see. And it's worse with Green Lantern BECAUSE there are multiple, because you CAN have them coexist onscreen. There's no need to kill Hal other than the "subverting expectations" BS that the writers adapting these franchises seem to like so much.

The point is that it's a character I quite like, who's only previous live-action adaption sucked, and they're going to kill him immediately as soon as he gets another chance.

Spoiler

If Hal dies, Hal and Sinestro’s rivalry, something we know will be highlighted in the series, will cease to exist.

Without Hal and his rivalry with Sinestro/ Sinestro’s pettiness towards him we can never get Parrallax

Without Parrallax Kyle has no reason to exist

Without Parrallax Hal has no reason to become the Spectre as he has no sins to atone for

Without Spectre Hal or Kyle, GL Rebirth can’t happen

Without Spectre Hal Blackhand never becomes a black lantern

Without GL Rebirth or Hal and Sinestro’s rivalry the War of Light can’t happen (ok, maybe Red Lanterns can still happen but Sinestro Corps doesn’t exist without Hal vs Sinestro)

Without the War of Light or Black Lantern Blackhand we can’t get Blackest Night or Simon.

The only Lanterns potentially unaffected by the stupid decision to kill Hal in this way so early are Jessica and Jo.

I cannot stress enough how absolutely integral Hal Jordan as a character is to all of GL mythos. In such a way that his stories cannot simply be transferred to John. Without Hal the DCU can never be considered a true GL adaptation. The only thing they could possibly adapt properly is GL Mosaic, and they can’t even do that because the writer did activities which would have made him at home on a certain island. Killing Hal off without giving the opportunity for Parrallax/ GL Rebirth is such an unbelievably shortsighted decision. I highly recommend reading Rebirth to see exactly what we are being robbed of.

Guy Gardner, apart from the awful suit, may be our greatest hope of a faithful GL adaptation in the DCU.

They don’t even have the decency to give him a good looking suit before they send my favourite DC character to the Shadow Realm.

The thing about Parrallax is that it needs to be followed up by Rebirth a few years down the line. Without the latter, the former is just blatant character assassination.

The biggest problem here is that it sounds like they’re just killing him in such a way that makes Rebirth impossible. Parrallax, while it would have sucked so early, could at least have resulted in Rebirth a few years down the line which then results in peak. But no, GL fans aren’t allowed faithful adaptations apparently.

I am convinced that JLU, despite its many merits, has done irreparable damage to the GL brand alongside Reynolds.

You’ve Swordy’d me for the 3rd time this week.

After his treatment of John and the GL ring in the last issue of Wonder Woman I’m not sure i have faith that Tom King has even written John with justice.

Always happy to swordy someone given how often swordy swordies me, it's nice to pay it forward.

JLU, or rather the DCAU, definitely did some damage as a whole with some of the characters chosen. Jon being the main lantern probably would have been ok in it if the order wasn't inexplicably Kyle (with Hal's backstory), then Jon, then Jessica and randomly the other earth lanterns always existed and we just never saw them. A similar thing happens with Wally, but thankfully CW flash kept Barry as the main flash in everyone's mind.

I don't think Tom King generally writes anyone with justice. His run on Batman wasn't exactly the most well-loved.

I will give him credit where credit is due as his Darkseid War God of Light One-shot for Hal was fantastic, Woman of Tomorrow is good, and while I haven’t read it myself Strange Adventures is supposed to be really good.

Everything else he’s done ranges from mid to trash.

ISTG. The wedding fake out might have been one of the worst editorial decisions in comic history. Up there with Paul. (Who at least resulted in fun memes. In fact without him i’ve found that marvel comics has no punchline/s)

For some reason the DCAU chronological succession is: Hal (known from time travel episode), Kyle who looks like Hal (S:TAS), Kyle who looks like Kyle in a simplified version of his 2nd suit (JLU),  Guy, John and Jessica.

Weird decisions that were relatively innocent at the time but have now snowballed over time into a big problem for the GL fandom.

Man, after seeing that new SpongeBob set leak as well as the Lord of the Rings sets, I’m really disappointed this theme hasn’t just been folded into Icons already.

Maybe Lego really is 'squatting' on the license and needs to come up with a release, albeit small, every so often. Just a random guess.

Possible. They don‘t want to lose the license but also not invest too much, which can be a tough thread to needle :shrug_oh_well:

The set selections may be painfully dull and the most boring out of almost every existing theme, but at least the quality is still there!

On a more positive note (I’m sure we’ll get a decent GL showing outside of Lanterns anyway)

It appears that

Spoiler

Somehow Blue Beetle returned

Lego, if there was anytime when you should start doing character pack type sets for superheroes it’s next year with the large number of characters required for Doomsday, MoT, BTSV, X-Men’97 and Secret Wars

IDK if Ashnflash is reaching for straws here but he made this video about how there could be signs that MoT is getting some LEGO representation next year.

I haven't watched him in awhile- I don't dislike him, but I stopped specifically because it felt like every other video had him claiming something was coming or theorizing we'd get something off of ridiculous stretches. He also brought up the minifigs in fortnite a lot, because IIRC he's a huge fan of the game, but those have never hinted at actual upcoming licensed figures.

4 hours ago, BrickBob Studpants said:

I like Ashnflash‘s videos, but this is a bit of a stretch :snicker: I get it, us DC fans are getting desperate, but if MoT gets a set, I‘ll eat a Soup minifig.

Yeah. If the most Soup (2025) got was a mech, Soup 2 isn't getting one. You can argue the specifics on how well Soup did as a movie, but it certainly wasn't a smash-hit against it's budget. Peacemaker and Creature Commandos would never get sets, and from what I've heard the ending of the former was pretty controversial. Supergirl performed worse than morbius. Lanterns is shaping up to be a monumentally poor adaption of the mythos- so much so that one of the comic artists dunked on it himself- and regardless, the rating means it also would never get sets.

So lego's looking at a sequel to a movie where their loose tie-in retired early, and a universe where every other project was R-rated, a massive flop, or both. There is zero incentive for them to make sets, especially when they seem to have data that claims at the moment batman is their only seller.

I suppose we’ll be getting 2 less sets next year.

Given the huge names they've been attaching to this thing and yet it STILL can't get off the ground I'm starting to wonder if it's some Roger Corman F4 esque scheme where they don't actually intend to release this movie and are just going to pay off some of the people involved.

Does it have to be explicitly based on MoT, or would a comic based Superman set count?

Explicitly MoT :snicker: I don‘t want to risk having to eat a keychain or something

I swear Lego these days is such a good indicator of box office success lol:

They made Minecraft movie sets last year. We were all puzzled—movie became a smash hit.

They bailed out on making Minions & Monsters sets—movie underperformed.

They bailed out on making Thunderbolts sets—movie underperformed.

They made a Project Hail Mary set—movie became a cultural phenomenon.

They didn't make live action Moana sets—movie is a flop.

They skipped Avatar 3—that movie underperformed.

They’re bailing out on the DCU—the franchise is struggling.

I guess their only miss is Mando and Grogu, but still kind of funny how many bullets they’ve seemingly dodged

They also made sets for Captain America: Brave New World and Fantastic 4: First Steps while skipping Superman, which was the most successful of the three.

The MCU is their exception to the rule- I don't know why they skipped Thunderbolts but generally every movie gets a set.

DC is in a radically different state but they still gave superman a loose tie-in, which... retired early. Not good news.

:(   I still don't understand how Brave New World beat it. Hopefully they get some good screen time in Doomsday and everyone can see that they're the best super team around since endgame.

With The Battinson ll now being a 2028 movie, there is a nonzero chance that the film's development outlasts the entire DCU. I don't think it's particularly LIKELY- I imagine MoT does about as well as Soup, which would probably keep it alive- but if that movie underperforms and Paramount pulls the plug a few months later, there's a nonzero chance that an entire cinematic universe occurs between the first and second battinsons.

Even if the DCU gets canned next year, there’s still likely going to be some films from that universe that start filming between now and then which will release after The Batman part 2 (so long as it doesn’t get pushed back again).

Also, I doubt it’ll be canned. If Man of Tomorrow flops, most likely case is Gunn “decides to step down” and they bring in somebody new for a soft reboot.
