  1. Interesting theory. Though I think it is far too unknown by the masses for them to make a set from it. Would be a good b model though.
  2. The engine fan from 42030? I wouldn't worry, if they release one I'm sure it'll be big enough to have some decent functionality.
  3. Which is good, I'de never want to change your opinion but I am curious as to why? I know that it could be awesome (a motorised beast with an insane gearbox, new gigantic wheels with tractor/JCB chevron tread and wheel hubs with built in planetary gear reduction and new pf buggy motors and new heavy duty diffs and CV joints WITH THE ALMIGHTY POWER TO HAUL MY 200LB SELF ON A SKATEBOARD! sorry, got carried away!) but it likely won't be that.
  4. Volvo yes, claas not so much. I mean, you can make a great set out of a tractor and and great set out of a supercar, you can also make a crap set out of them so it's hard to get excited about any of them just yet. But I never really got the appeal of tractors. Some real life tractors are great with their planetary gear reductions, insane electrohyraulic gearboxes and hydraulic steering with many different steering modes but so far every Technic tractor has consisted of no more than rack and pinion steering, fake engine, a small implement that moves when you push it and that's about it. If they aren't going to do any more than that (which they never do when it comes to tractors) then I don't see why such mechanical simplicity should require the set be more than 250 pieces, or more importantly, priced more than $20.
  5. Oh really? I haven't seen that. In that case I stand corrected. I agree, I don't like that kind of comment either but in a way it is constructive as it clearly states the reason behind said disapproval. It's not just saying "just quit Lego" which is just plain cruel and wrong. Whilst I don't agree with it, I think people should be free to say it as long as there is some constructive element to it.
  6. very true, I have edited my last post.
  7. Well, obviously it's wrong to try to tell someone "oh, you shouldn't use third party parts, you should only use 100% Lego elements in your builds!" but to be honest, I've not seen anyone say that to anyone. I have not seen anyone trying to tell someone else how to enjoy their hobby. A lot of people here seem to be complaining about something that isn't happening, at least so rarely that I can't remember a single case of it, so isn't that a straw man argument? What I have seen is people saying something like "yeah it's cool, but I personally don't find it as impressive as a MOC built with 100% Lego." That's not the same as trying to tell other people how to enjoy their hobby, that's just having an opinion (one that I don't always agree with but that's not my point). Isn't it slightly hypocritical to bang on about the non existent problem of people telling other people how to enjoy their own personal hobby whilst at the same time telling people how they should be forming their own personal opinion? Besides, from the way the original question was asked, referring to judging MOCs, it kinda sounded like it was asking about MOCs for competition, for which it's pretty much agreed that unless specifically allowed otherwise it should be 100% Lego.
  8. Yes that's what we mean. When the clutch inside slips, it's not smooth like the white gear, it's a very rough stop/start motion which makes the teeth look like they are skipping but they are not. Look at the axle going into the LA (short for linear actuator, the grey cylinder) and hopefully you will see that it is still turning. It will look like the axle is turning inside a bevel gear which is not turning, but in fact the gear is turning with the axle.
  9. That's what was removed from the hoses, not the hoses final length. I have edited my original post.
  10. This post may help. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=105184&st=1475#entry2420868
  11. The outrigger gear train is protected by the white gear, which is a clutch and it is silent when working. However the grey cylinder is protected by it's own internal clutch, which is loud and sounds like gears skipping teeth. That's just the way it is.
  12. For it's size and part count I'de say yes, it's still the best. You won't find better at this size. If size is not an issue and you want to compare it to sets currently available then I'de say the arocs is the only set currently available that's better.
  13. For anyone having problems please have a look at this post I made a while back, maybe it will help Just finished it and I love it even more! The crane is way more impressive than I thought it would be. But nothing can be perfect, that's impossible so here's a couple things worth noting for any of you who are going to build this milestone of awesomeness! I found some of the blue hoses that supply the valves to be too long which when installed as shown in the instructions, there was a chance of kinking and preventing it from working, so I cut them a little shorter. Cut hoses at your own risk. This shows what was removed from the hoses, not the hoses final length. The end result is nice and tidy and with no chance of kinks. Pneumatics work perfectly! But there are some things to be mindful of when routeing hoses. After a test fit I found there is a gear that fits right here when installed onto the model: So be careful when shoving hoses through the base that no hoses end up here..... ....otherwise it will rub against the gear and potentially stop it turning, which would prevent the arm from slewing left or right. There is a lot of hoses to pack into a tiny space, it's definitely the most packed part of the model. All of the hoses shown here (which in the picture I've already shoved up inside the turntable)..... Have to fit into this tiny space here, without rubbing against any moving parts like gears. Hopefully this will help somebody
  14. Ok, so what's the difference between an illegal technique and an impure model? i thought an illegal technique was where you have the potential to cause permanent damage or deformation of a part (IE by having the ridges on a connector peg permanently pressed in as in 8043 or running a motor at too much voltage to get more power) and impure was the use use of third party parts excluding batteries. If that's correct then the S-brick is legal, better!, but not pure. Is that right, or is the use of a third party part itself an illegal technique?
  15. Nailed it! Great model and also got a wall-E, I hope you all got some lovely lovely Lego
  16. I see a wrapped present, looks suspiciously the size of a 42042 box! We shall see if I'm right
  17. Agreed but I think purity means built only with parts that came in/as an official Lego product (except for batteries). But yeah, to design or make the parts Efferman and others make does take a lot of skill. I have (mostly) chosen not to go that way with my hobby but I do not feel any sense of superiority for doing so. I have used third party tires and I am very temped by the S-brick, it's just a bit pricey. I would love to see one and operate one in person to make a decision.
  18. It's not a question of Lego legality (I think it is legal), it's a question of Lego purism (I think it's not pure).
  19. Merry Christmas and God bless you all
  20. 199.99 Euro is the regular retail price, and it's definitely worth it .
  21. I used to build fast but now I relax and spread it out over a few days. Here's a related question, does your build speed depend on the kind of Lego you are building? As a rough estimate, my build speed was about 250-300 pph (parts per hour) for modern Technic, faster for non Technic builds (like 10030) and slower for complex older studded Technic sets (like 8480). I remember getting 8275 one Christmas and a MISB 8480. They both have a similar piece count but 8480 took at least 2 hours longer.
  22. If previous years are anything to go by then yes, usually images start floating around in private (not shared publicly by the good fans anywhere) between 26th December - 1st January. This is where a few lucky people manage to see them and everyone else gets to annoy Jim by asking for pictures! This year took a few weeks longer than last year for the first half set pictures to appear.
