Some of the best ever flagships have motors, some do not. It all depends how must they are relied upon IMHO. It's like salt, sometimes you need to add a bit to make something taste just right but add too much and it spoils it.

Model Team Definition
allanp replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think whilst technic was Lego's answer to meccano, model team was Lego's answer to airfix. Highly detailed with little to no functionality, it was absolutely all about form over next to non-existant function. There are many great MOCs which have a technic inner with a model team outer shell, but they are not entirely model team, only the outer shell. The v8 engine in the black cat is identical in size to a technic v8 engine, but being model team they did not use a technic engine, the chose a brick built and more aesthetically pleasing engine. To make the dakota wrecker model team you would have to replace the technic beams with standard ones, remove the drive train, replace the engine with a brick built one, remove the suspension, remove the winch. It would basically be this: -
Yes you are right. It's just my own thoughts. I don't think so. I hope I haven't confused anyone, it was only my own thoughts as to what constitutes an official model team model as opposed to a creator model or a MOC. However I'm not making the rules so you should definitely ignore me .

I vote no LAs, no pneumatics, no functionality other than what has been done in official model team sets which is very simple rack and pinion steering, manually opening doors/hatches/skylights/hoods (no mechanisms attached), manually moveable propellers (no gearing of any kind) and a ball and socket pivot for a trailer. Off the top of my head I can't think of a single other function that exists in a model team set. You can use any part you want as long as it's not used to make a mechanism or function that extends beyond that. Use an LA only for decoration (must not move).

Doubled clutch gear?
allanp replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It all depends. I don't think you'll break anything after it if there is no further reduction and yes, it will double your clutch power. But now you have to consider if the clutches with slip and provide effective protection of the motor and gear train. Clutch gears are meant to protect the entire gear grain, not just what's before or after it. Best answer is just try it and see. -
Congratulations to the winners and thank you to Jim and a crazy scotsman (but mainly Ted!) for running this contest. Discounting the specialized mountain bike I just about made the top ten. With how good the other entries were I'm very pleased with that .

Generic Contest Discussion
allanp replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What about a contest to build the missing 2002 flagship? This would be cool to see what people come up with but it might be difficult for everyone to enter and to enforce because only parts released prior to 2003 would be allowed. Though an LDD file would help. -
Like me? Seriously though, yeah I would think you now have to edit your post. If this does get removed your vote will no longer add up to 20.

The amazing technofunctionomical mini digger of epic functionally, mechanically and aesthetically authentic and robust splendidness MK one and a bit that's yellow

Apologies for the picture size once again . BTW I assume we are not allowed to vote for our own entry

Just made a new one. Should I hang on till the contest is officially closed before sending it to you?

I think kumbbl has said it all very well, but I'll add my 2 cents anyway. In a previous topic asking what makes a good flagship I posted this: To me the Unimog meets all the criteria set out above far better than any other set released in the last 10 years or more. It also has a great building experience. You build a 4x4 gear train into a live axle suspended chassis (a first for Lego), then some gearing and then a full pneumatic system. Not only is the build full of a variety of different and authentic mechanics, something rarely seen in modern so called "authentic" technic sets, it also doesn't feel diluted by countless beams and pins even if it does have a lot of those too. I'll always have love for the older legends like 8868, 8455, 8880 and a few more, not only for nostalgia but because they also meet the criteria I quoted above better than modern sets do. But thinking objectively, without nostalgia, 8110 is the number one technic set of all time. But 8880 really raised the bar! Oh and 8868 was just....oh I can never decide

Competition so far is huge (like this picture, sorry about that ). Which ones do you think most look like a real set?

[MINI] Mini Digger
allanp replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Updated lxf file: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/radbot/online/Mini-digger/mini_digger_3.lxf The part count in the file is 187. If you count the turn table as 2 pieces and add the 11 hoses that makes 199 pieces. The valves are represented by 3M dark grey beams, the pump by a black gear rack and the cylinders by 9M yellow beams. I bet you'll all be clamouring to build this now -
SBrick General Discussion
allanp replied to Nofer89's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have read every post but I didn't find much about the custom profile designer other than there will be one . I read somewhere that these guys were into making software, I'm guessing they already have the expertise and the tools to develop a custom profile designer and I'm guessing that for them to use those tools would cost them only time. That's a lot of guessing but I reckon that if they was to show off an untested but fully featured profile designer with all the stuff that I mentioned (including the "live zones" and the gearbox layout thingy) that it would help them reach their goal. But I will be backing them for at least one anyway. Just don't tell my purist side .- 780 replies
