42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245
allanp replied to AndroTech's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
An inline 6 would be physically too large to be in scale for this model. An inline 4 would be about right. Not concerned at all with adding two extra cylinders. -
Thankyou very much First MOD will be to upgrade the compressor I think. The new cylinders are great, just what I've been asking for but I think they are under performing here for whatever reason. It will need minimum two pumps working 180 degrees out of phase I think. I can understand if only one pump is included for cost reasons. There is already a lot in this set.

Yes. The new turn table appears to be 60 teeth. For those that don't know that's 4 more than the current one so to drive it you would use a drive gear with 4 less teeth.

Wasn't it the daytona VX4 supercar? Also the test car was a weird name. -
I'de place this rule under unwanted colour vomit. Would look so much better if they were all dark grey and I don't think having two or three colours makes it all that much easier to not make a mistake. Would it be better to have a sticker sheet with a bunch of numbers on it so you could number the hoses as you build and then remove the stickers when finished? Less chance of making a mistake, better overall look.

Depends on the parts you want, but my vote goes on buying the individual parts you need from Lego https://service.lego...tBrickBuy/42039 or bricklink if Lego are out of stock. -
Men, tired of it taking forever to get it up? Tired of getting repetitive strain injury or having the need for an electric motor driven device? Try our new pneumatics, because LAs aren't worth it!

Ah yes now this is a good argument from which people in the dark can learn something. Thank you It's true that by knowing someones gender we place many assumptions on that person just because of it. Is it wrong to make these assumptions? Well, in most cases probably not because statistically most of these assumptions will more often than not turn out to be correct, with some obvious and disgusting exceptions. Being male, someone could make a whole bunch of assumptions about me, many of which would be correct, not because I'm male, but because statistically it's more likely to be correct than not. I see a girl that is into fixing cars and there is a hint of surprise only because most women aren't into that (which in itself is not a negative judgement), and then a much bigger hint of "that's awesome!" (a positive judgement). However, to then go on to think that a person SHOULD for-fill these assumptions is definitely wrong. To make a negative judgement on a person for not living up to an assumption based on their gender is also definitely wrong. Basically to simply make an assumption and then be a little surprised when that assumption turns out to be wrong is an involuntary act that is natural. But to expect others to live up to that assumption is wrong. That thing of changing from a male name to a female name is disgusting, I hate it. There are many many areas of gender inequality that negatively affect both genders but I don't think we are talking about that here. It may well be that as a society we are discouraging women from getting into tech but again I'm not sure that is what we are talking about here. Or is it? I think this maybe the crux of why we disagree. I see TLGs particular use of the "for men" thing as nothing more than a bit of harmless humour. I don't see it as part of the major problem you are referring to where women are actively discouraged from getting into tech but maybe I am wrong. I think I can see where you are coming from now. When I see TLG's use of "for men", I see Mr T shouting "For men, UUURRRGGGHHH!" and it's funny. It seems that when you see it, you see some douche bag saying "this is not for you, because you are a woman and it's too difficult for you!". If that's how you see it then I completely get what you are saying. So the question is, how does Lego intend the "for men" thing to come across, like Mr T or like a douche bag? We can only guess but I'm pretty confident that it's the humorous Mr T. But regardless of how TLG intends it to come across, does it have the un-intended side effect of re-enforcing gender based assumptions? Maybe, but as I said, to make an assumption isn't in itself a bad thing, in the example of a girl being into fixing cars it only led to a good judgement being made of the girl. It becomes bad when it leads to gender inequality and negative judgements being made. In this case that would come in the form of a woman feeling bad or slightly unfeminine about being into Lego or having negative judgements made against her for being into Lego. I really don't see that as being the case here. No-one to my knowledge has ever made a bad judgement towards a woman for being into Lego, indeed we might think it's a little surprising but we all think it's ultimately awesome! I think women, being just as capable of having a sense of humour as men would just see the funny side.

Why mumsnet? Do they have all the answers? Don't you have all the answers?

That's a lovely sound bite but could you be a little more specific? Don't get me wrong I'de love to see more women in this hobby, and I'de hate to see anyone see this as a boys only club, but I don't see how banning this little bit of humour based not on some deep seated misogyny but on a statistical fact is going to help. Don't we all like a bit of humour over some bland overly PC environment where no joke can be made just because someone might find a way it could offend someone else and then can act all white knightish and come to the rescue of this someone else to show off how brave they are for standing up to fight for a minority which is in fact a world wide majority against the evils of a little bit of humour? It's fine if you don't agree, we're all different, but I'de honestly like to hear some of your reasoning. Less of the sound bites please. I'de also really like to here some womens opinions on this. Am I wrong or just not entirely right, am I missing something?

No, not at all. Women on average have longer hair than men. Does than make a woman with short hair less of a woman or the designer of the Arocs any less of a man? Of course not, so that argument is bollocks. On average men tend to find more enjoyment in putting construction toys together than women. That says nothing about men who don't find enjoyment in it or about the women that do find enjoyment in it, that's just the way it is and I really don't see a problem in acknowledging the fact that that Technic is something that is going to appeal to far more men than women. Jennifer Clark is the designer of some of the best MOCs out there and we have a few active female members here on Eurobricks, but is anyone really going to say that this isn't a sausage fest?! Even this very forum has a special banner for Eurobricks ladies, do you think that's sexist or in any way actively discourages women away from the hobby? Afterall, the presence of this banner is an acknowledgement that Lego is generally preferred by men. So what is wrong with marketing that also acknowledges this?

Technic....GET SOME PINS!
-
Ooooops! Sorry. .
-
I don't think women are actively discouraged from it. For whatever reason putting model kits together seems to be more appealing and fun for men than it is for women generally speaking though there obviously are exceptions.
-
I see that in the picture too. It sounds and looks great but perhaps a bit too similar to the very recent cargo plane. maybe having the control stick in the cabin would be better?

So, in another unrelated thread there's mention of a German website devoted to advertising some models as being "for men", which is kinda funny. So instead of derailing that topic why don't we talk about that here. Better yet, what marketing styles could they use, funny or serious if you want, but mostly funny! Please note, this is not meant to be sexist against women, it's more for poking fun at how easy it is to appeal to/take advantage of some peoples masculinity! My "for men" advert of the new mercedes arocs. (In a sexy female voice) Introducing, the new, big boy! Slow pan around the model The mercedes Arocs (Olivia Newton John voice from the movie Grease) Tell me about it stud! (original female voice) No studs, a totally studless animal that boasts a long ram! Tag line Technic, built by studs so it don't need em!
-
Instead of the "for men" thing I think they should just get rid of the upper age limit to prevent offending any potential customers, not that I care what the all knowing twitter deems to be the evil of the day that we should all be offended by no matter how unimportant and trivial it may be

Well spotted and I was right -
I have seen MOCs that use drive rings this way and one official model, the submarine b-model of 8480, but this is so far the best official use of it IMHO.

For sure I gotta stock up on those longer cylinders. Imagine the excavators, back hoes, small forklifts, skip lorries, front end loaders that can and will be built by MOCers, all the future official sets that will use these new cylinders and all those official sets that came with LAs that can now be put right! It's gonna be wonderful I tell ya! -

My money is on 60 bevelled teeth. It would make sense to increase it to 60 with the bevelled teeth.
