    You can also hack your own train controllers and receivers fairly cheaply such as using a $3 Arduino board. You can program it to send PF IR commands to the PF IR receiver in the train engine. You can add sensors to detect the train location, LED lights for signals, motorized crossing gates, etc.

    I use rechargeable batteries since some of our LUG events with trains are outdoors (no A/C outlets). I recharge before each event. When event season is over, I take the batteries out of the battery boxes before I store the trains away. It is best not store the remotes and battery boxes with the batteries inside for months in order to avoid leakage problems.

    Yes, kids like crashes and are probably a good reason not to make trains with lots of small tiny loose parts. My cousin's kid came over this month and all he did was play train crash. I found out that my Batman train worked really well as a battering ram knocking other trains off curves at the edge of the table to their exploding demise. LEGO should make a train battle set with loose tracks and crossover.

    My profile picture comes from my photo a day project of making a MOC with Jar-Jar Binks and photographing it. I did one a day for a whole year and I ended up with a collection of 365 photos.

    You can upload sound files to the NXT and it'll play it back. I remember I had to convert the WAV file to an audio format supported by the NXT. Also the NXT speaker isn't very loud.
