[WIP] Lancia Stratos

Why not a single link, instead of all those gears? Less backlash and more reliable. I did it here (using 9398 parts): -
[WIP] 1968 Ford Mustang
vmln8r replied to VKTechnic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
VK, what program are you using for the stress analysis? CRookie28, that looks excellent! -
Thanks for that. Here in Europe Benny's Spaceship retails for the equivalent of 190 NZD, so Toyco's offer looks pretty good. Seacow seems massively overpriced.

Is that a serious question? I'm not sure. Whether it's expensive is your decision to make. It might also be possible to control your camera via computer using a USB cable. That's what I sometimes do with my Canon 7D to better control the framing, etc. Also what anton1678 said is crucial; make sure your camera is in manual mode, or at least not changing shutter speed/exposure/aperture/focus/white balance from shot-to-shot.

Get an inexpensive shutter cable for your camera to minimise shot-to-shot vibrations.

[MINI] Crane Arm Truck

Cute! Reminds me of this: I love what you've done with the flex axles, however for this contest I would try something that bends the tips less. Also think there should be greater contrast between the chassis and the function gears on the side. -

Flight using Lego

Everyone knows what the parameters are for this to work, so if you can meet them, please just do it. Or we could just discuss it ad infinitum.- 157 replies

I'm overseas at the moment, but does anyone know if Benny's Spaceship and the Seacow are available in Wellington stores? (like Moore Wilsons, who tend to have the best prices)

Hope you don't mind some critique :) I think it could be more playful; it would be great if you could get drive from the landing gear to the prop. I also don't think that these days Lego would use non-standard axle/pin colours, particularly in such a small and inexpensive set. Same wobble issue with the new landing gear also applies to the 1x1 cheese slopes on the wingtips.

Excellent stuff! The varied colour white bricks work particularly well.

MOC Sharing Dilemma
vmln8r replied to Cumulonimbus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Interesting Lipko: still, the laziness factor remains :P As for recognition, fame and glory; don't we all want those things? If someone in a creative field says they want to be less popular, they're lying. -
MOC Sharing Dilemma
vmln8r replied to Cumulonimbus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I would not say the lack of constructive criticism is because people are too nice. For me, it's mostly that I'm lazy and/or don't care enough (to that end, if you need explicit constructive criticism, maybe the quality and quantity of discussion that a build generates is a good enough proxy). The other thing is, what are you gonna do with that constructive criticism? Personally, I appreciate that people even look at my stuff, but when I'm posting something on the net, I've often spent enough time on it already and just want to be done with it. For instance, take your Audi. There are things I like about it (some excellent bodywork details, although as a whole it looks too 'pixellated', if that makes sense) but I didn't care to tell you that because: (i) laziness; (ii) I didn't care enough (yay, another large red supercar with suspension, gearbox and fake engine); (iii) you probably spent a great deal of time on it and I figured if you're happy with why needlessly critique it? -
MOC Sharing Dilemma

Well, your last point is reason enough for me. Seeing the creations people posted online was one of the things that got me building again. -
[HELP] Legal Building Technique
vmln8r replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The diameter of a technic hole and a system stud differ, so this type of connection has more friction than a standard stud-to-tube, and is harder to remove. Making more of these connections with a single piece multiplies this friction. Isn't the logic for this connection being illegal that simple, and quite different from legal multiple stud-to-tube connections? -
Indeed it is. Very curious to see if it sells. No, at least not for you, and I would do the same (if I had Star Wars); you'd be getting a lot more money than the collection's actual value. But that's a one off; and each to their own, but I simply cannot understand the logic of those who look at Lego purely as a monetary investment.

I'm actually not in NZ now, but I'm curious about that Wellington show. Went to one at Capital E last year that disappointingly didn't have a single MOC, just collections of stuff built straight from the box. And yeah, that auction seems excessive; I wonder how it compares to BL data. From what I know, it's only the UCS MF and ISD that are worth the big money, right? I wish people would realise there are better investments out there than Lego, it would make browsing through TradeMe much more efficient.

Gears, most wanted

There's a great deal of stuff around on not-specifically-Technic (here, for instance), and also of course how Technic teaches you mechanical things, etc. However, is there any work done on the value of Technic building, in terms of a child's cognitive/emotional/psychological/social development? Doesn't necessarily have to be peer-reviewed, anything goes at this stage.

Gears, most wanted
vmln8r replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Cumulonimbus: the 14-tooth gears do this when connected perpendicular to each other. Not sure if they reach each other in parallel. The 8t gear and the inner 24t of the turntable also work.
