As I clicked this, I thought to myself, "There's no way I'd buy it unless it's the classic space man." I was actually really surprised.

I have all of the sets except the polybags. I actually have 4 Constitution Trains and 5 Cavalry Builders. I guess some might say I got a little carried away. I saw the movie. I liked most of the chase scene at the end, but overall I didn't think it was very good. It wasn't true to the spirit of the original series. TLR gave us a great Lego theme, but that's about the extent of it.

I would give up my firstborn child for a series of modular forestmen sets.

ASK HERE MOC-stuck? Ask for general building advice here!
jodawill replied to mrklaw's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I've done this before in an alien vehicle I made. I just put the light brick with the studs up and had the axle go through a brick with an axle hole, not a pin hole. -
I just reported a bunch of counterfeit items this guy is selling -> http://www.ebay.com/usr/mango19998 eBay needs to crack down on this crap. This guy is actually implying that his items are official Lego products. His listings never use the word "Lego," but they never specify a brand name and they're listed in the Lego brand section of eBay. This is flat out fraud. eBay needs to do something about this! There are probably a lot of people buying these things thinking they're legit. That will make TLG look bad because the counterfeit items are crap.

It looks too close together to be jumper pins. Maybe he attached clips to them and attached them to some kind of rod so he could adjust the distance between them. But that would only account for the gap in one direction, not the other. So I have no clue.

I think the biggest problem with the large sets these days is that they don't come with baseplates. I don't understand why TLG doesn't include them in regular sets anymore (yes, I know things like the modular buildings have them, but those don't really count because they're not even sold in department stores). I think Fort Legoredo is the best playset they've ever made. It's not much different from a castle. Just look at that thing! It includes FOUR baseplates, a headquarters building, three outlook posts, and three entrances (with two sets of giant doors). It even comes with a little wagon and three horses. There are just so many awesome extra details in that set that make it fun for kids. It has a gun case you can pull out of the building, a big barrel, a jail, two trap doors, and even a couple extra spots for hiding gold that aren't even advertised in the magazines. All of this for only $85, which was a great deal, even then. The newer sets just don't feel complete. You put together an expensive set like Helm's Deep and you just feel like it's missing something because it doesn't fully enclose anything. It's just a wall or two. So, if you're like me, you buy four of them so you can make a real castle. King's Castle is better than Helm's Deep in some respects. It has four walls, so it feels a bit more complete. But it still doesn't feel quite right. It's missing a lot of the most important features of the 1990s castles. There's no glow-in-the-dark ghost, a dragon, The mid-range sets also used to be a lot more complete. Just look at something like 6082. The baseplate, barred gate, and dragon really make this set feel complete. That's not to say TLG isn't doing as good of a job designing sets as they did in the '90s and '80s. But I think in many cases, they've sacrificed playability for extreme detail and increased piece count (which isn't really indicative of whether a set is a good value IMO).

I think he's asking whether the numbers on the parts can tell TLG at which plant the piece was manufactured.

I've never noticed that before. Now it's going to stick out to me every time I see it. This year, they're releasing a 1x4 masonry brick. That will solve your problem, but I'm willing to bet they'll be very expensive on Bricklink for a long time. I wish TLG would just put those masonry bricks on the Pick-a-Brick walls. There's no reason for them to be so rare and expensive (although they have gotten a bit more common over time). It's one of the most awesome pieces ever, and it's one of those things everyone wishes they had thousands of.

Would it hurt you if the Star Wars franchise would stop right now?
jodawill replied to HJR-Holland's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I know TLG makes a ton of money from it, but I would be glad because I liked the non-licensed themes before Star Wars a lot better. I think TLG designs the best sets when they have the freedom to be creative and make whatever ideas they come up with. That's exactly how I feel about it. When I was a kid, I was a huge Star Wars fan. Now they've put out so much crap I'm just tired of it being thrown in my face incessantly. I was really excited when they first started making LSW. I had even written them a letter the year before asking them to make Star Wars sets. When that SW magazine showed up in my mailbox, I thought they'd stolen my idea and hadn't given me credit for it! But there's just so much crap out there now. I'd like it a lot more if they took a 10 year break, released some awesome classic Lego System themed sets, then came back with one or two waves of Star Wars. (Or maybe I wouldn't even appreciate those waves years later; they've already produced every piece of crap you could possibly imagine several times over.) -
Middle-Earth Madness - Mount Doom vs Lothlórien [Week 4]
jodawill replied to Blakstone's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Definitely Lothlórien! I love sets with a lot of tree pieces and the elves are really cool. -
I have found a lot of stuff at garage sales, but it's usually not anything I'm interested in. I keep the parts I find useful and sell the rest. A few months ago, I found a massive collection of instructions and random other books and posters (idea books, magazines, etc.) at a garage sale. It was all 1980s/early 1990s classic space, castle, forestmen, and pirates. They had sold the bricks just a little before I got there. I was so upset I almost started crying. It was the biggest and best collection I'd ever seen. All of the papers were in mint condition. BTW, I posted a thread about the Brick Kicks magazines I found that day. I'm looking to sell or trade them for parts.

And I don't like fleshtones. I'm a Lego purist.

Phew! I finally have enough posts to share this with you guys. Edit: I found an 8th issue of Brick Kicks in my box. I'm adding the photo to the set right now. I have 7 issues of Brick Kicks to sell or trade. I have no idea what they're worth because they're so hard to find online. So I'll need some help figuring that out. They're all in near-mint condition. I listed them on eBay, but I set the starting bid pretty high because I would rather sell them here. If someone would like to trade, I'm looking for Wild West goodies, especially the old cavalry minifigures, covered wagons, tan baseplates, 1990s teepees and cows. (Especially cows!) I'm also in need of some imperial and Armada soldiers. Also, if anyone is interested in seeing a specific page of one of any of these issues, I'd be happy to take a photo (but not scan; I don't want to risk bending them before I sell them). Anyone interested? PS – I also have a bunch of instruction books from this time period that are in just as awesome condition. I found them at a garage sale, just minutes after someone bought the sets themselves; it was the biggest Lego collection I've ever seen in my life. If anyone's interested in old castle/forestmen/pirates/space instructions, let me know. It also came with a bunch of other random stuff like an unused birthday kit. I'll have to post more pictures later. Edit: There are more copies of these magazines on Bricklink than last time I looked. It looks like they go for about $10 in mint condition.

I hear a lot of people asking for the revival of Pirates and Wild West. I too can't wait to see those come back. But there's another theme that we don't hear about anymore. Forestmen! These guys need to have a comeback. This is one of the most awesome themes of all time! I would buy the crap out of these things! Please make this happen.

Maersk Ship Selling better than Parisian Restaurant?
jodawill replied to kinggregus's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I can't imagine a lot of kids wanting that Maersk ship. You guys are probably right about the hobbyist buying it. But are there really that many who would buy Lego? I'm not sure about ship collectors, but I know a lot of train collectors won't go anywhere near Lego trains. -
That's awesome! I love how that guy is just running out the door in his underwear to slaughter his breakfast.
-
With TLG producing parts in China now, I'm surprised we don't see a lot more pieces leaked onto eBay early. That's probably where the Simpsons minifigures came from. If you recall, some of the earliest auctions only had a head.
-
Definitely not cheese wedges (although that would definitely be easier than this). It looks to me like he's using a hinge on each row, but I could be wrong.
-
I've always wanted this set. When I was little, I went to someone's house and their kid had all of these old Pirates sets. I completely ignored everyone and played with them the entire time we were there.
-
I've gotten over 1,000 pieces in a cup before. I filled it with all the smallest pieces they had.
-
I can't wait for those little sets to be released. They look really cute!

Maersk Ship Selling better than Parisian Restaurant?
jodawill replied to kinggregus's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That sounds really weird to me. IMO, the Parisian Restaurant is one of the best sets they've ever released. The Maersk container ship doesn't look very interesting at all. Isn't it too small of a scale for minifigures? It just looks like a display piece to me. -
I love the shower curtain! That's just fantastic! I wish I had thought of that. How did you separate the tiles in the floor?
