Hello all. I've finally completed my last build of the year with Kahuka's Koffee. A building influenced predominantly by neo-classical architecture. It has taken about 3 months to complete. I've wanted to try my hand at more varied styles of architecture. It's been 4 years since I last had a go at a classical style. The problem I find with this style is that it tends to be all one or very few colours and it makes picking out details more difficult so I've opted to vary the colours of floors and put highlights in where I could. I wanted to include a rounded roof mainly to finally use the PAB cup full of 1x4 slopes in black I got a while back. I also was keen to incorporate balconies and many arches - common in classical architecture. There is an interior but only for the ground level floor (Said here in the UK), but I've not chosen to build upper floors as it would take too long and frankly I just didn't have enough plates to build another 5 floors If you're wondering why it's called Kahuka's Koffee, there is a subtle hint of the Islanders theme in the facade. I've included a slightly updated version of my streamlined delivery van which I made some years ago to give some busyness feeling to the street. Anyway here's all 9 pics; If you wish to view them at flickr my stream is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/52656812@N04/ If you have any questions about techniques I used or any comments please feel free. Cheers!

I've been coming here a while and during that time modulars and the winter village theme have gained popularity so I probably expected that they will take up a higher percentage of topics than say classic town which was the highlight when I joined. Perhaps its a little winter village heavy at present but that's the time of year and it will fade away in a couple of months. Personally I enjoy seeing well made and interesting ideas for vehicles and smaller builds such as fountains and the such. I try to view and comment when I have the time when someone has put time and effort into a well made MOC. My preference is much more towards original MOCs rather than layouts of modular buildings and MOD's but thats just my personal taste. I would like to see the town forum have some separate sub-topic threads for things such as townlayouts/modular talk+mocs/vehicles etc. I find there is quite a bit to wade through to find something I want to comment and express my interest in. With so many topics of all sorts of nature all lumped into one place as a poster you're not likely to stay on the first couple of pages of the town forum for long so people might not go trawling back through pages to find whats been going on. When I've had a couple of spare hours and I've been back through the pages I find some great MOCs which have had very little interest and I'm surprised how little interest they've had. For any newcomers to the forum they might find something they've spent a lot of time on gets relatively little attention and they might be discouraged from posting again and getting involved in other topics. I think there is less need thesedays for pictoral reviews when brickset/BB and especially jangbricks do a decent job with well balanced opinions and good lighting! I agree with wookiee, one of my pet hates is people who join the forum to purely to self promote their lego-ideas topic and have little time and interest on anything here. I still enjoy coming here and try to visit on a daily basis to see what people have come up with but think the town forum could do with a bit of streamlining! Just my 2 cents.

Very nice indeed! The dome is well done and I like the rounded shape of the wall at the rear. My favorite part is the front door, Using the underside of bricks as well as on-top looks like it might be easily breakable but looks great!

I agree, the interior is done very well but I find it a little full-on with the amount of gold in the exterior. I think in this case 'less is more'. I think it needs colour or texture to break up the facade. Most of the gold pieces used are quite flat. It's quite a sleek build but personally when I think of jewelry shops I think of an older building. Stone or maybe timber framed with gold curved decorative elements - the kind found in ninjago sets and the such. Anyway keep it up and I look forward to seeing what you do next!

Very nice work! It looks like you've captured the styles of buildings very well compared to the source material pics. Even without the gold coloured roof there is plenty else here to be enjoyed, I really like the busyness of the street but those beers are an excellent touch! Nice one!

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
snaillad replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
For me, the Parisian restaurant set a very high standard of detail/interesting and varied techniques on all floors inside and out. The two sets I purchased since, the DO and BB both left me feeling rather deflated in comparison to the PR. Maybe I'll enjoy AS if I get around to purchasing it. It doesn't inspire me going forward and I would call it maybe just above average from what I've seen so far because can pick maybe 4-5 modulars I like more. I'm probably just a more harsh critic than others because I really like this genre of architecture and have built many moc's in this style/era. In terms of techniques I would of preferred the use of the larger 6 wide rounded glass piece on the corner, if they could of figured a way to use that piece whilst making the model stable that would of been an excellent technique (built sideways), instead they copped out and put the 4x4 curved window on the inside of the window frame. A conveniently placed post box is and minifig is hiding that gap on several pictures To me the fully snotted facade lacks any interest because its rows of tiles over and over again. For me this would have been a good opportunity to give us a different kind of window technique, or even build the lintels as part of the snot facade instead of using the arch brick vertically. I like the style of lettering used to say 'Diner' although I would of preferred it mounted vertically. For me it looks as if the whole car has been based around the pretty high door piece, it makes it feel much higher than it's supposed to. I appreciated they are unlikely to make a new one for this vehicle especially, a door piece one/two tiles shorter would maybe of helped bring the height down The tail fins of course are essential to this genre of car but they look just as laughably out of proportion much like the wheels used in the Palace cinema's vehicle were also pretty 'off'. It's supposed be a 16+ set and the car doesn't seem very 'advanced'. Perhaps EB member de-marco could show them a thing or two about making a car! -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
snaillad replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Glad to have finally seen the pictures. Pretty weak all over IMO. The one set a year I look forward to and it feels pretty 'meh'. I'm a big fan of and have built many Art-Deco/Streamline MOCs and I do alot of study into the architecture before and whilst building and this modular just feels lacking in technique and interest. The top two floors in tan are seriously lacking. It would of been a good chance to do a more interesting colour to reflect the period, the windows and lintels are dull and the roofline is not much better. I'd much rather they had continued the whole theme of the white/teal/pink all over as part of a corner rather than filling it with this bland tan/black/grey combo. For me the car is a waste of space - looks a bit too chibi for my liking. I'd rather they used the pieces for some other details - perhaps the interior. The diner seems okay but the floors above seem like an afterthought. Lacking in any interesting details - the minibuilds look very uninspiring. It's not ALL bad though - I prefer normal minfigure smiley faces but the ones they have selected are nice, I can still get normal smileys from Bricks and pieces. The minifigure torso's are decent too. The teal colour I wouldn't say no to either, not sure how much is downstairs but it could come in useful for something. The price is decent for here in the UK for the amount of pieces. Personally I think it would of been a better building as a complete corner set, much of the side stairs and 'eyebrow' are probably going to get 'lost' when connected up against another building. I think this diner concept would of been much better suited being a two floor building with a tall downstairs with a mezzanine floor with more tables and perhaps 'memorabilia' on the other walls and then an apartment above. I still haven't purchased AS but looking at the last three modular buildings in a row, it seems quite a big come down compared to AS from last year. I'd be interested if anyone can truly say that this is 'progress' or that 'modulars just keep getting better'. I think the modular buildings sell well no matter what so maybe they don't even have to try very hard thesedays. -

I really like the colour palette used. More natural building colours with the use of flowers to brighten it works very well. I really like the interiors and it is very well photographed to highlight the excellent details. Well done!

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
snaillad replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
To me the essence of a 'modular series' building is something that fits a standard pavement/sidewalk size and that is more importantly modular in relation to its stack-able floors. I don't foresee a stack-able train station, even shoeing in a hotel or restaurant etc above it would probably detract from an imposing station by way of increased piece count and price. Modulars are a tried and tested formula, I can't imagine they will stray too far outside the safe norm however I could envisage TLG making an additional large style city set perhaps not modular but under an expert line perhaps to commemorate the 60th anniversary (And their current love for high piece/priced sets). Either way with people posting on EB and other sites their city styled/modular buildings it becomes harder for TLG to surprise and interest me. The only set I buy a year is now the modular building and I still haven't purchased AS yet - doesn't really excite me. I hope for better in the coming year. -
I like the way you've done the turret and turret roof. Nothing I've attempted myself. Looks a good technique. I very much like the building on the left, the roofline and awning compliment the building well. I agree with what peedeejay said above about the colour on the side on the building. If another building was next to it you probably wouldn't notice it. The only thing about the building on the right what I'm not as keen on is the use of the yellowish orange colour. The combination with the grey reminds me more of an industrial building interior. I think I've seen the yellowish orange colour work well with white but less so with grey, think it was one of your previous buildings! I like the tearoom interior details very much. Well done!

Impressive scale. Looks like a bakery I'd like to visit!

[MOD] Laundromat Modular 16-wide from Brick Bank
snaillad replied to koalayummies's topic in LEGO Town
Very nice work! -
Thanks Littleworlds! I don't tend to go for organic colours very often so I'm glad you like it! Thanks guys, I'm pleased you find it original. I try to come up with ideas that I've not seen before! Thanks you lightningtiger! Thansk greg3 and eliza! It was a fun challenge doing a organic base, I have even more respect for castle themed builders now! Cheers Andy, it was hard to judge how to make the castle, I almost wanted it to look more cartoony and fake, like a real miniature golf course but it probably ended up looking more realistic than expected! Thank you Newtown!

Hello fellow EB members; Here is my latest creation. Crown Castle Adventure Golf. I've had a mini-golf based MOC on my to-do list for quite some time and this is a decent representation of what I originally sketched out to do. I had a couple of other themed ideas in mind - Inca and pirate themed but went for castle, maybe I'll revisit another theme someday. Being used to building on baseplates and nice square corners this was somewhat of a challenge with a organic shaped base and some rockwork which I can't confess to being particularly good at. It was fun to give it a go though! Although its essentially a castle it's not meant to be taken seriously (which is why I've posted in the town forum), although I've seen some people take adventure golf very seriously! Anyway on with the pictures, 3 in all; You can find the same images at flickr if you prefer here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/52656812@N04/ Enjoy!

The upper two floors blend in pretty well with the ground floor by use of the 'brick' 1x2's. Although I can't help but think it might need some colour in the transition between the top of the lowest floor to the middle one. You've done it effectively by using that dark tan line below the windows to break up the two shades of grey. Anyway, keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing the interiors and also what you come up with for a roof design. Cheers!

Nice colour combinations, art deco styling is always a winner with me!

Looking good so far! I very much like the tall windows capped off with the new inset arch piece in black (you beat me to it!) I really like the inset door and arches used. Not sure what else you've got planned but it looks like a grand ground floor so I'd guess you're going to make it tall? Cheers!

A very imposing building! Looks like you've captured the likeness very well. In some ways it's hard to appreciate all the details with most of the facade being white but that's representative of the building. In a way it would be great to see similar techniques used from yourself here in another building that's not based necessarily on a real life one. With some colour you're techniques would really stand out! Great job and keep up the good work!

Good call with only building facades. Much easier not having to think about support structure etc. I like it very much, I'd love some sand red. As said I hope a modular in the future can provide us with some! I look forward to see more of your work in a bigger scene. Well done!

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
snaillad replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I would doubt they will go down this route of a re-release for all modulars. For people just discovering modulars now of course are disappointed they've missed the boat a decade ago. Someone in 5 years time will be sad they've missed out on the parisian restaurant and would want re-release of that and so on it goes, you can't keep re-releasing forever to humor newcomers. Also for any of the modulars that didn't sell as well (Town hall I believe as one example) might not be very profitable re-releasing if it wasn't even that popular in the first place, but of course if they chose to ignore it and re-release all others than the town hall for example then someone would complain about it not 'completing their set'. Most of the early sets are able to be made using current elements without much noticeable difference, and as many people have proved on EB and also in many of the flickr/moc pages groups there are some awesome custom modularmocs. After 10 years of official inspiration there is plenty to go off for people to make their own. Some people will sadly need to accept that whats gone has gone, it's not the end of the world missing the odd modular - I'm not picking on you jdubbs! :) It's just I've seen so many comments on here and places such as brickset etc wanting re-releases. As for whats next to come I just hope it has a new colour or lots of elements of a rare colour - gold would be very welcome! I'm going to stick my neck out and say........... bookshop possibly with an apartment above. Cheers -
I really like this, lots of use of colour, and each building looks different enough from the rest. Looks like it was a lot of fun to build! Nice one!

[MOCs] Swing Carousel/Chair-O-Planes, Drop Tower
snaillad replied to AlexDoesLego12102's topic in LEGO Town
Some really good ideas! It'd be great to see them within a bigger setup with some of the other fairground themed sets. I would have a similar face to those on the drop tower! Well done!- 13 replies

I find it fascinating to see styles of architecture that are unfamiliar to me. I really like how you included an interior and also that it is a cutaway, I find it easier to appreciate the interior details rather than a modular top down approach. I hope to do something as effective as this to replicate my country's typical dwelling. Great job!

A very interesting building. I like the interior details, the typical red/white checkerboard clothes for a pizzeria and preparation area caught my eye.
