Augh, you, auuuuugh Anyway, they're reasonably rare. But the price has bottomed out at about 30 (I spent 50, but I had some cash from selling things on eBay), so compared to some other collectibles, it's not that much.

What's the difference between the two trans-orange Haus that I'm still super jelly of? One looks like it has some added opaqueness. As seen in the other comparison pics, it's a lot to do with the angle, since they exist on a slant. Onua's mask is obviously a lot smaller, but that's compared to one of the biggest Mata masks anyway =P.

It was never about "convincing" people, just trying to contribute to the overall discussion. But since that seems to be a contest (and I don't have the necessary skill to mspaint some random lines, ignoring that the masks have been given expressions), I'll gladly bow out; Calvin would be proud (Hobbes, not so much). Anyway, I like the slightly smaller masks. The Kanohi could seem a little excessive at times, and the Nuva only exacerbated that process.

Technically the MoUP is reddish in color; again, any theory could very easily be right. But you're denying other possibilities simply because you seem to like your own interpretation the best. Other people also think the mask also could resemble the MoCo, so the only real "argument" is that you don't seem to think so. It's not a matter of seeing who's right or who's wrong; we're just trying to have fun thinking of different ways the story will go. Very likely it will be in a way nobody expected. BZP usually does, but I don't know how early we'll be seeing their reviews this/next year. (would be nice, though!)

Right, but by that logic, we're going to get a maskless Makuta as a set; at the very end of The Legend Animation we have Makuta and Ekimu wearing no masks. If we're going by purely what we've seen and with no interpretation or speculation, we have a disembodied mask as the main villain. That doesn't sound particularly exciting to me. I'm not saying it WON'T be Makuta wearing the Mask of ultimate power; that obviously has so come into play somehow, although how it works is likely the summer story. But to deny any other interpretations just because they don't fit the most obvious viewpoint isn't thinking critically about anything. Theories are supported by facts, not the other way around. Oooh, I like the sound of that. I still like my idea of an uncorrupted version, but that's perhaps less feasible. Would be smart to include both versions in one set...

How can you say that with absolute certainty since you have already admitted that there isn't any evidence? Makuta himself was corrupted; we saw that. All three masks were scattered across the island. In terms of colors, yes, the MoUP is the only one that fits. But if they ever intend to introduce a Mask of Control, it would more than likely be on a Makuta set, and if they don't show an uncorrupted version (which you were insisting there wouldn't be a few pages back...?), then this would be the place. It would be incredibly unlikely for a black Makuta set to include a gold mask. You say they're hiding the MoUP to reveal it later; it could just as easily be because they haven't actually finalized a design and are intending to do so in the future for a longer arc, somewhat like the Ignika, and they only reason they're showing us the MoCo is because they have already finished it, and will introduce the piece later. Lack of evidence doesn't support any one idea over the other; we're just spitballing some speculation, here.

Obviously the color is different, we're talking a potential corrupted version. And nobody actually knows what the MoUP looks like because it was completely obscured by energy; the only defining points are the rectangular amoeba juttings that do not seem to fit the aesthetic of the curved mask shown in the teaser, which instead appears to have heavy brows very similar to to the ones seen on the Mask of Control. It remains to be seen what the mask we see in the teaser image is (plot twist, it's a 2016 spoiler!), but it's not completely out of the question for that to be the MoCo.

Personally I think the shadowed mask in the background of the website teaser pic looks a lot like the MoCo, but since the MoUP was pointedly hidden in the animations, it could be that too. Plus, suddenly evil spiders attacking, and face-hugging mind control likely. Sounds like a Mask of Control behind that. But, again, it's all just speculation.

(or it could mean they sold a lot of their stock because the wave was really popular, but nobody ever expects that from lil' ol' Hero Factory)
-
That's something I've been bringing up on BS01; there's certain parts that we're obviously meant to take literally (Ekimu and his mask exist, Masks of Power are real, etc) but the video is called "The Legend", which generally has implications of myth. One of the things I hope they do away with is obviously the nonsensical nature of the timeline, and keep things grounded in a real sense of chronology, so even if the Makuta/Ekimu conflict is in the more distant past, it won't be "thousands of billions of trillions of years ago".

That happens often enough. It's mostly based on stock. Wave 2 seems to be more popular than wave 1, probably because of the more interesting primary colors.

True facts, bro. True facts. Haha, he was also my favorite! The weapon storage is especially appealing, but the overall design always attracted me. Looking forward to this for sure.

People have reversed their opinion on Onua after seeing more than just single images? I am shocked. Not really :U I like Onua, and while I can't watch the video (vacation internet wheeee) this talk of weapon storage pleases me.

Battle For The Golden Mask Competition: Discussion Thread

Not that it's relevant to most builders (aside from anybody who grabbed the NYCC Tahu mask off of eBay) but are 2015 parts allowed at all? -
I plan on getting them all, review budget allowing.

I guess it depends on how you define a parts package. Most people use that term to describe something that contains pieces that are super useful but in short supply (like balljoints used to be), rather than unique type pieces. In terms of the latter, for recent sets I enjoyed Fire Lord a lot.

On the subject of the contest, I'm hoping it's not only a sheer level of technical expertise that's being judged, and not just because it slants unfavorably towards certain BIONICLE demographics. I know the prize is solid gold worth several thousands of dollars, but one of the things I've always liked about seeing LEGO MoC contests (official ones) is that the winners always have a certain sense of personality or uniqueness that is independent of tricky MoCing techniques or good photography/lighting. Not that I don't want the winners to have those, per se, but I like to think they'll be judging on other merits as well. Anyway, Ekimu will almost certainly be a summer set, as will Makuta, although I'm hoping for a light and dark version of him.

Battle For The Golden Mask Competition: Discussion Thread
Dorek replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Hey, I'm on vacation until early November; I'm not even going to have access to parts until then =P. I could LDD something, but for once I feel the need to get down and dirty. As answered to my question: So basically, don't push it =P. -

1. That's exactly the answer I was looking for =P. 1.5 I more meant in the instance where an MoC is inspired by a particular artist's rendering of a concept that's in the public domain, but to be safe I'll avoid it entirely. Thanks for the answers! Well, we're boned. Very cool! And mysterious black mask? You tease! -

Aight, a few questions while I have internet. 1. Is the villain intended to be (or at least being judged on) something that would work in terms of the BIONICLE aesthetic? Not that I mean in terms of canon necessarily (looking at you BBC53) but will any sort of villainous character do, or should it be something BIONICLE-esque? 1.5. When you say "not copyright infringing", does that mean creating a LEGO homage/version of something that originated in another IP isn't allowed at all (even if that IP, in turn, stole it/adapted it from some other work)? 2. Does the Technic-to-system parts ratio mean strictly in terms of part numbers, or the amount of space it takes up? (Not that I plan on cheating that with a bunch of small pins and large System pieces, but you get the idea) 2.5. As a follow-up to that, if there's some scenery/backdrop, does that count toward the ratio? In my case it's slightly more essential than just scenery, but regardless. 3. Do system bricks that have Technic inclusions, like pin holes or axle holes, count toward System? I would assume so, but juuuust checking. Most of this hinges on the answer to 1.5, but I'd rather know now =P. -
Likely a lot. There's the actual value of the gold, and then the added collector's value. Thousands, easily.

Battle For The Golden Mask Competition: Discussion Thread
Dorek replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Fantastic contest, guys. And I'll be back from vacation with time enough to access my real parts, too =P. (also please tell me Deevs isn't in the contest because I think everybody wants a fighting chance :U) -
Some of the confusion also has to do with the direct sequel (MNOG2) having a whole bunch of unapproved characters and names. So basically, your average villager is hard to consider "canon" and is just a background fill. But for all intents and purposes, it's canon. I wouldn't mind a dedicated story member to ask questions to, but only if it's in a regulated manner, like Ask Greg was on the BIONICLE websites back in the day. Or if they worked with fans (like BS01 hint hint wink wink nudge nudge) to make sure all their ducks are in a row.

Ugh but then that's not REALLY a "reboot" it's a continuation where they're trying to distance themselves from the original, which is silly. We'll see. We've got years ahead of us.
