  1. Well, "Alternate Universes" are generally what we call stuff from G1 where there was a timeline divergence and then things turned out differently. For the purposes of the story, the "rules" generally apply across the universes, it's just the events that occur differently. G2 is (likely, although there's still some confusion...) set in a different continuity, where the rules can be completely different. Not so much that as it was just left a mystery. For the first three years, yeah, we didn't know where the Toa came from. With the revelation of Metru Nui, it opened up a completely new universe, so the implication was that they were from somewhere there. Their actual origins weren't necessarily important, since they had to have come from the Matoran Universe (and we got to it eventually). With this, if they're implying that you can "make up your minds" as to whether or not the two canons are distinct, then I feel like they missed how insanely rabid we are about concrete facts.
  2. I'd be a little disappointed if it was an open-ended introduction mystery. I don't mind if they're saving it for later, but if they just leave the nature of the Toa's origins "for the fans" to decide, then they really don't understand the fans that well =P.
  3. Fair enough. I also think that, if anything, it's just an easter egg. We'll see, though. It's only October =P.
  4. Which I think unduly influenced questions people asked the designers; although it does resemble a Vahi, it's placement there (as, y'know... a cloud...) could easily just be an homage, instead of some other kind of reference.
  5. Two PLANNED years; I doubt we won't get them, given the amount of pre-hype, but it's an important distinction. Not to mention the alleged connection to the Gen 1 verse has all but been debunked at this point.
  6. I find it funny that we all have different opinions on 2009 sets =P. Usually there's a fair consensus of what looks good and what looks bad, but maybe it's the amount of time that's passed that has helped us develop independent thoughts on the matter. I wrote a psuedo-explanation into my winning Core War story, so in theory there was a trigger on the blades that allowed him to fire it =D. I never understood how Malum did it, though. Squeeze his armpits?
  7. See, I think 2009 had mostly bland designs, which were saved primarily by color design and part usage. The 7m joint with sideways facing axles was a godsend, I'll grant. But outside of a few exceptions, the Glatorian were just your average Inika builds with better colors, and sometimes questionable additions: long necks, wobbly ankle armor, etc. Strakk was easily the worst of bunch, with his ape build, absurdly unusable overspecialized weapon, long neck, and helmet that did absolutely nothing to cover up any of these flaws (unlike Stronius). Tarix is a masterpiece compared to that. Well, that was the whole Maori controversy. Hopefully we won't be seeing anything weird like that in the future, especially without the over-reliance on weird names.
  8. Tarix's build was pretty uninspired, but the aesthetic was fantastic. One of my favorite 2009 sets. (that said, it seems a little strange they'd allow an intern to design an entire set, but hey, I've never been an intern there)
  9. Yeah, there's a lot of great stuff there. Some of the older 2002 stuff, especially, is really nice. We uploaded a lot of it to BS01, so you can check Shine's uploads for the good stuff.
  10. The Protectors combine with the Toa (I guess Brain Attack sets are the best analogy?), from what we can tell. I'm sure we'll get a story-based combiner in the magazine, and maybe online. Kaita would be nice, though the website arrangement of the Toa in their Kaita combinations is enough for me, even if it was unintentional =P.
  11. Since Makuta wears the Mask Of Control, I kind of figure that's what's causing the animals to be all mean.
  12. Certainly a possibility, it's just that the information presented makes it hard to distinguish. Lewa's element? Jungle. His mask? Jungle. His golden mask? Jungle. We're so used to the idea of swappable masks (which is why people keep clamoring for mask packs) that it seems foreign to consider a single designated mask per character (and then the golden masks, be they upgrades or whatever). I'm sure the story will make it clearer as it goes on.
  13. I'm still thinking they might be titles; it calls the golden masks "Mask of [Element]" as well, so what would be the point of finding them if they're the same thing? There's probably more to the story.
  14. I keep saying I want a both Makutas (even if they're just palette swaps), perhaps with one as a store exclusive. Since I'm fairly convinced that the evil eyes lurking aren't the MOUP but an evil Makuta mask, it would be nice to see that. That said, I'm also kind of expecting a physical manifestation of the MOUP. Summer wishlist: Ekimu Makuta Evil Makuta MOUP Takanuva :U
  15. Every LEGO line is a "part of LEGO", so that's a bit of an odd statement. Much of the huge presence had to do with the fact that BIONICLE, in large part, saved the company financially, especially in its first year. It might sound cynical to say, but the reasons you see for their making BIONICLE a part of your life have to do with some fantastic commercialism. Patently untrue. 2010 had an enormous promotional push, with an insane amount of supplemental material, TV show, comics, the works. The following dwindled over the years, but that's not unusual; for a serialized line (despite HF's attempts to be more episodic), it's almost inevitable. I saw plenty of kids in my local LEGO store buying Hero Factory sets over the years; more often than not, they had put them together even BEFORE reaching their cars! The problem is that, even with the huge promotional push BIONICLE is getting now (we're in the honeymoon of it) constraction overall is still niche. The sales potential is a lot greater with the types of things they did for the first movie. Maybe we'll see a BIONICLE world in the LEGO Movie 2, anything is possible. I certainly didn't expect the cameo it received before, even if it was a slick burn on the line overall. Even with publicity, it will do the same. Hero Factory lasted for five years. That's pretty fantastic; no line can last forever. Using Hero Factory as a negative standard does the genre as a whole a disservice. If people hadn't responded to Hero Factory, BIONICLE 2 as we know it now might very well not have been a thing.
  16. In the previous series the Toa all collected the versions of each other's masks that they didn't have (6x6, so 36 "standard" masks plus a bunch more) which they then fused to make golden masks, which would change shape depending on which power they were using (sometimes not at all, but that varied by story media) at any given time. The "default" one on their face was the golden version of their original mask. These versions were all released in mask packs from 2001-2002, with some random silver versions as well that never got used in the story. (as per usual I'll plug BS01 for the story stuff) In this case, we don't know why there are additional golden masks, or what they do. But they are very cool looking, indeed!
  17. They have a current topic on the LMB asking for people to guess what the powers are for the masks, so I think it'd be a little silly if they were just the exact same ones from 2001; perhaps we'll see some old standbys, like shielding, and some new ones. Maybe they'll tailor the mask powers to fit deficiencies that the Toa have. Not really a "copout", just a design decision. They were never obligated to make mask packs, and with things like the NYCC transparent Tahu mask (gotta get me one of them...) I'm sure we'll see enough variations to be fun.
  18. The colors are slightly off, if it matters to you. The earlier lime doesn't quite match up with the 07 lime.
  19. Greg, on whether or not it's a continuation: Not a particularly helpful answer...
  20. Huh, didn't realize they gave away so many of those NYCC Tahu masks. I'll wait for the price to drop a bit on eBay.
  21. Hey man, nostalgia is powerful. It can make you forget the small things, like facts.
  22. Thanks a lot for the information, Deevs. I'm not accusing TTV of lying or anything like that, I just wanted to hear what BZP's take on it was and what their experiences with the panel were. You've provided a great deal of insight, and I appreciate it a lot. (also I KNEW you had some of those masks you clever shrew. I'm jelly of the transparent red version.)
  23. Considering how differently everybody uses "reboot", I dunno. I'd like to hear Greg's take on it, and what BZP's interviews yield as well.
  24. Not likely. Even if they did, it would have been through different channels, and there would still be a review embargo on them. I'm sure they'll write up their impressions, hopefully tell us more about functions and such, but a full "review" will come much later.
  25. Haha. Haha. what Okay. I'd love both a dark and a light Makuta version as sets, perhaps the latter as a store exclusive or something, even if it is just a Jetrax-esque recolor.
