The best of the worst Lego Ideas
xboxtravis7992 replied to anothergol's topic in General LEGO Discussion
My IQ has taken a hit after seeing all those ideas. Some I think originate with innocent natured children, some from good natured but not very Lego talented adults. I don't really want to criticize them harshly, just tell them "thanks for trying" and let their idea sink into oblivion. But some were just TROLL TROLL TROLL!! Oh that Gaza Pyramids and the Edison Lightbulb, LOL in all the wrong ways! I once saw an idea on Ideas to make a set based on "All about that Bass." One of the most What the Crap?! moments I've had on Ideas. Lego really needs to make their filtering process stronger. It feels like Lego Ideas is becoming MOCpages/Brickshelf 0.5 (yes, by 0.5 I mean it is a step backwards). For every great project like Wall-E, there are 10000 horrid LDD "made in 5 minutes" models. Here are a few more examples: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/140428 https://ideas.lego.com/projects/140284 https://ideas.lego.com/projects/115095 -

Disney Collectible Minifigures Series 1 Discussion

I think Mattel prevented Barbie from being in Toy Story 3 sets, and Hasbro prevented Me. Potato from being in those sets.- 4,155 replies

I had no idea Disney has its own in house action figure line. It's hard though to judge how well Hasbro's sells are for action figures since their product line is very diverse (lighsabers, Nerf Guns, helmets, vehicle sets, board games, etc.) But the fact Lego grew so rapidly to outsell brands such as Hasbro is amazing because Lego sells just ONE main product, Lego bricks. Even variants such as CCBS, Duplo, and Technic still are %100 compatible with traditional Lego Bricks. In short Hasbro rose high on multiple product types, while Lego got there on just one. If anything it shows the immense power of Lego's brand and product design. So yeah I think Disney could probably see there is immense demand for Star Wars Lego Mininifigures. And if Disney can run its own action figure lines with out Hasbro, couldn't Disney just as easily permit a Collectible Mininifigure line? (Especially seeing that any lawyer who calls a minifigure an action figure is boarding on insanity...). The real question is would a line like that sell well enough Disney would authorize Lego to do it even at expense of pissing of Hasbro? Or maybe Disney prefers Lego's current strategy of sticking rare figures into $70 sets...

I can see the appeal, but I also know that forums with kids are hard to run. I signed up to BZpower when I was 12, and I'm glad the servers crashed, I don't want to know what stupidity I wrote as a 12 year old back then! Furthermore Spam would be worse on a kid aimed site. If it's bad now with Korean's selling junk on Eurobricks, would we really want kids to see that same stuff? We know to ignore it and report it, would kids be able to do that? Yes I do agree that KFOL's could use a place to rub shoulders with more experienced builders. The only places they can do that now is the very juvenile and insane Lego.com forum, and MOCpages which borders on excellent to terrible depending on the day.

Ah there's an eight axle system! Yes do a nuclear missile car! The US tryed developing those cars, but it didn't really get off the ground. However the program was enough to inspire Lionel to make an O scale Nuclear Train Toy, where select boxcars would flip open and launch a foam Minuteman missile.

Yeah I don't think real life Haynes bumpers would stop a train either... I've seen a few crumpled up by the coupler on a train car that was accidentally pushed to close to them. I think they only work for really slow freight moves, or just help to remind engineers where to stop.

Why to we feel the need to modify?
xboxtravis7992 replied to __________________________'s topic in Community
I mostly prefer stock sets, unless there is a REAL need to modify it for play or mechanical issues. For example the last permanent mod I made was to a Protector of Fire Bionicle set. The original set didn't have proper elbows or wrists! Other times I build or design accessories for use with official sets. My Maersk Train has a facade of "boxes" in the containers, not a huge mod but something that adds to the set's design. -

Um quoting our arguments and responding with just "No" is a bit confusing (and without a good explination, irritating)... Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is that we don't know the full extent of Hasbro's licensing agreement. If they can call out Lego's minifigures as licensing violation why hasn't Lego called them out for Hero Mashers which are in a sense a constructable figure? Unless the legal documents were leaked and we could read them in full, we'll have no idea what the full extent is. Of course reading the reason Lego rejected the CUUSOO Dark Bucket project supports the idea there is some form of restriction on the license. Still, it is ultimately Disney who controls licensing. And if Lego offers a marketing plan for Collectible Mininifigures that excites Disney execs, couldn't Disney expand Lego's license? What's not to say Disney might even restrict Hasbro's powers in future contracts? Star Wars action figures may sell well, but for a while now the Lego market has been booming, and it wouldn't surprise me if more people purchase Lego Star Wars products now than they do purchase action figures. There is no way to verify this, but in a few years when contracts are periodically reworked, what's not to stop The Mouse from allowing Lego to full tap into the lucrative Minifig market?

Anybody ever done a US style Haynes buffer?

This set was my fifth train set (sixth if I count that Hogwarts Express on weird wheels...). However this was my first "power functions included" set as my previous sets were Creator Expert and the Lone Ranger train. The locomotive is great. I prefer the Maersk Train, but both capture the look of a GP or SD series locomotive. The color choice reminds me of the CSX Dark Future paint. The Achilles heel here is those three train cars as you said. While I love the cow, the car it comes in looks silly. To short, open roof, etc. The fact it comes with the farmer makes me think farmers in Lego City ride open top stock cars at 70 mph through Lego City... The two longer flat cars aren't to bad, they have a prototypical length and look the part. I just wish Lego had given us a boxcar, tank car, or a hopper car instead. Or even an intermodal well car like the Maersk Train.

I dunno, seeing the amount of Star Wars polybags we have gotten with one character, could it be that the rumored "Hasbro forbids Lego from releasing single figures because they are action figures" be a bit moot? We've also got a two waves of Star Wars Constraction figures that are even MORE SO action figures than a normal Minifigure. Heck I could even point out Lego's Constraction line is competing with Hasbro's Hero Mashers (Galidor 2.0 as it should be called...). So if Lego can realese one off figures in polybags, surely they could release 18 blind packaged figures in polybags at once and call it a Collectible Series.

That tender looks cool! But the nuclear nerd in me wants to know what fuel would a tender carry for a nuclear train. Uranium wouldn't need all that space (not that it would be fueled on the run either...). Water would be a natural choice, keep the reactor cool and what not. But what else could be in there... A small diesel motor for yard moves? Dynamic braking? Haz-Mat equipment? Ah I'm over thinking it!

Bionicle 2016 Story Discussion & Rumors
xboxtravis7992 replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
I'm on the fence it could happen or it could not... But we do have fictional stories that are both reboots and continuation. Love it or hate it 2009's Star Trek reboot was an example of this. The story is set in a new universe with new characters (or new versions of old characters) but there is a direct link between the two via a group of characters from the original story influencing events (most notably Leonard Nimoy's original Spock). Furthermore both stories shared a similar mythology and background. So if Bionicle took this approach it would explain the Toa's origin (it would still be hard to explain Lewa's new jungle power that way...). It could explain the Vahi as an artifact of both dimensions. But ultimately it would still leave a blank state for the reboot. If this was the path taken, the reboot story could continue uninterrupted, just with the added info "the Toa are from another dimension." The problem with a lot of fan theories I've seen is they want to link the reboot and G1 in such a way there is no point in calling it a reboot... I don't want Okoto to be on Spherus Magna with Velika in the guise of Ekimu and Vopharak running around with Vezon teleporting in and out. It doesn't make sense, and would be gratuitous fan service which would in the end destroy any purpose to both stories. -
When I first saw the word "locomotive" and "terminal velocity" in the same sentence before I watched the video, I was afraid I was going to see something else... Great mechanism. Love the loop! Also to get an exact calculation on the speed, don't model railroading companies make speedguns for scale trains? Might get the best result.

So right around the time Electrosteam started his Retro-Future Atomic Train topic; I saw a video online showing the operation of a nuclear waste transporting train here in the U.S.: So I decided to get in on the nuclear Lego train fun by recreating one of the DODX (Department of Defense) nuclear waste train cars in Lego form... Or at least kind of recreating them. Re-watching the video now is making me want to redo the cars again to catch some finer details (although I doubt I'll get around to finding a way to get those crazy eight axle bogies under it!). So here they are (apologizes if they don't show up for a while due to Brickshelf's slow moderating system...) And here is the cutaway view revealing the prize inside... Yes I know that real nuclear waste is a dark dullish metallic gray color, but I decided the cartoon like Simpsons style trans-green glowing rods fits the more comical Lego world better than just a bunch of dark bley pieces! Enjoy! If you want to see more nuclear train fun, go back here to see Electrosteam's topic: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=131009

Old chrome was beautiful but scratched easily. Fortunately for me my Anakin/Luke lightsaber retains its chrome color! New chrome would be my second favorite, not as shiny as the old chrome but it's more durable.- 43 replies

A spectacular video about Union Pacific's 'planned' nuclear turbine train on Dale Angell's spectacular Toy Man Television channel on YouTube: EDIT: Oh and at the 2:30 mark you can see he has an HO model of the engine I've been building on LDD... I'm so jealous.

Hilarious (and vintage) article about BIONICLE
xboxtravis7992 replied to TwistLaw's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Just an adult fan ranting about his percieved views of what was wrong with the Lego Company at the time. He has another article on his site from 2005 decrying how foolish Lego was to pursue the Batman License... And the issue being he never saw it through the eyes of a child. While he moaned about Bionicle in 2001; I was a seven year old who gobbled it all up (you know, part of Lego's target audience!). I do agree to an extent some sets were <insert that tiresome argument>, but he greatly exaggerated some of it. Bionicle though was one of those themes that kept Lego afloat through years of problems. And by the time "we" (children who liked Bionicle) noticed aspects of juniorization in the sets, Lego had countered with more complexity in builds and new sets aimed to teenage and adult collectors. When I lost interest in G1 sets was the same year the Cafe Corner came out and I got interested in more complex builds. Excellent timing on Lego's part. The main issue is its just another adult fan with skewed opinions. Makes me feel odd though because I'm also now an adult fan with skewed opinions... EDIT: Someone installed a filter causing the word J-U-N-I-O-R-I-Z-E-D to say <insert tiresome argument here>. What are the MODs up to? ;) -

10 wide; not a scale I'm used to, but at that size a lot of detail could be captured. The only issue I see is the rail will look really small at that size.
