Thanks I'm certain you can break 100 next time

It's hard to make a choice. While I was too young for classic space and a lot of the others, my first space set being an Exploriens one. I also had UFO and Insectoids. However, I never had much of each of those themes so I can't pick a favourite. I did like the Insectoids minifigs the best though.

That sounds cool. Only problem is the pricing. I know the sets in ASDA will be cheap, as they are small and being sold in a supermarket. However the only other place that sells K'nex is The Entertainer, and they mark-up everything to begin with, I don't even buy Lego there (unless it's a really old set). I'll keep an eye out for some sets with figures.

Build Your Own Minifig now at Lego Stores
Peppermint_M replied to Commodore Hornbricker's topic in General LEGO Discussion
They used to have a make your own minifig in Legoland Windsor, in one of the random little shop things that keeps changing purpose from year to year. Not very good selection, but all three of the figures got ponytails (the only hair I didn't have much of) the next year it had moved to the Big Shop and you didn't get to make them up yourself. There must be issue with theft for PaB that is doubled for minifig parts... I would love to have one with actual selection. Maybe if the put some of the parts from the Inferno Robot civilians... As for it being the "coolset" my savvy little brother prefers to scour bricklink to mkae himself but then he's on brickset as much as he's on Lego.co.uk, my influence I suppose. -
Getting girls to play with/buy LEGO
Peppermint_M replied to FiletOFish's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I was never impressed with "Girl" Lego, it was too pink, too flowery and didn't have proper minifigs (Just missed Paradisa). It was also about double the price of your average impulse set (all I could get unless it was a real treat) and I only ever saw them in a newsagents in Dartmouth (we didn't go to Toys 'R' Us. It was mythical in out household). Now, that might have been due to my tomboy-ish nature and abhorrence of pink. However my Mum has always liked Lego but she loves the modular town buildings. She said herself, if we were rich and had the space, we would have a town plan full of all the town and city buildings and vehicals to play with. She loves to look at modular houses and is amazed by micropolia on the blogs I read. This indicates that she isn't into conflict centric themes either. My sister likes Clikits, as she likes making jewelry. My other sister isn't into Lego but once had a mosaic set. Scala and Bellville have never been popular. -
Did he post that one? Must have missed it amongst other things. Ho hum. Looking forward to it.

New Clip! as much as i wish to avoid it, i must see it!

I found some cheap-ish sets in ASDA recently. Next time I'm there I shall pick up a small set and give it a review. I woud be interested in how well it combines because I am still enamoured of the thought of a minifig scale ferriswheel which is also quite sturdy.

I know T_T. It must have been popular enough to attract some attention. Which doesn't mean if the film will be a roaring success.

I had a minor issue with the sharks jaw, but I might have gone wrong somewhere. The sub is fantastic and would work really well with Alpha Team if you wanted it too. Great elements and I loved having printed parts again. The shark was great for some minor modifications and intergration with Doctor Inferno. It was a fun build.

Well, I just changed mine to a new set of ELO lyrics. This time some lines from Time After Time.

YU-GI-OH!: The Abridged Series
Peppermint_M replied to Emperor Claudius Rome's topic in Culture & Multimedia
Yeah, I like it. Not seen any of the other "abridged" series out there. We like to quote it every now and then. I also like Weebl's stuff. -
I suppos I am interested in it because of the narrator, reminds me of Hitchhikers and thus makes it funny. I am not into horror and gore but I have always found zombies to be rather comedic. Glad some people liked the link. It's another film on the list for me!

I wasn't saying it was all natural behaviour, but it isn't completely socialy influenced. What I am saying is that for both boys and girls, some are naturaly more inclined to some things over others. There is always going to be someone who bucks the trend and do something percieved as negative for their gender as socialy defined. However, there will always be someone who is prevented from doing something by a self inflicted or peer influnced reason. It is very very complicated what makes us tick and how gender is defined and "ologists" of all kinds have been debating the bare bones for centuries. If all things were to start from zero again we would all have equal opportunities, but sadly we have millenia of social baggage to lug around and be anchored by. If all social history, and by extension gender roles, was wiped out, there would still be people inclined to one thing or the other.

Think you missed something there: He isnt discriminating, he is stating that it is a mixture of nature (how you are when you are born) and nurture (how you are brought up). My mum loves lego and duplo was one of my toys as a small child. When I was older I was allowed System planes and submarines, plain bricks and whatever other theme. I think the only time I was ever out right told to stop was when I was around 15 and mum wasn't sure, now she's fine with it. That is the nurture part, if i had never had lego, and mum had forced me to play with girl toys and other such things, i wouldn't be playing with lego. The nature part is how my brain was hardwired, pre-birth, during birth and shortly after. My brain loves to work around bricks and shapes, I spend hours building with no plan other than "dump all the cool stuff in a pile and build" but i get a great result. If I wasn't inclined in such a way, like my sister, who had exactly the same chances to play with lego, she just declined, the most i can muster her to do is make a figure of herself, then I wouldn't still be playing lego. The nature of our brains is diferent. There we go. EDIT: I also have to add, gender roles have been defined through the centuries and only since the World Wars has there been any effort to change deeply ingrained notions on what bodies with certain "bits" can and can't do/should and shouldn't do. If there had never been world war we could still be plodding along the same lines Edwardians did! (Potted History: All the men were at war in the UK, so Women had to step into their jobs to get things done, after the war they liked where they were and what they could do, women had proven that they could do the same jobs as men, the wanted to continue doing so and thus actions were taken that have carried on to this day) Now, Lego didn'y originaly say it was a boys toy, society decided so, thus years of only boys being interested in/allowed to play Lego means we are stuck in a loop of Only Boys have ever wanted lego so it's no point making lego for girls = Lego is marketed and made for boys so girls shouldn't play with lego (repeat )that needs major effort to change majority opinion so that everyone is equal. Same in a lot of places, I colud go on for hours (Liberal Femmenist Sociology teacher meant a lot of femmenist theory) but I need sleep...

The website and facebook page a very interesting. Sadly the facebook page has become popular enough for the ignorant masses and mundane "breathers" to wander in and get confused or "sarcastic".

Aquaraiders Tiger Shark! I found it in TKMaxx for £10 off the rrp! I love TKMaxx.

Oh yes, they have been in The Entertainer for years. I have never bought them because they are expensive there. I think it is an interesting method of building, I had lots of K'nex and space I would use it in self constructed towns (Just imagine a ferriswheel in you own Lego theme park/fair!). Its a cool idea.

Sorry, think i was misunderstood. It's awkward in TRU because my little bothers likes to say (in the wonderful "whisper" only children have) how stupid an opinion that is... Plus I have to fight the urge to walk up to them and say that I have been playing with Lego all my life and have a career that researchers have linked to adults who played with lego as children (Civil Engineering). I have no issue with playing with lego while being both 20 and female, I just have issue with anyone who wants to pigeonhole girls and limit their potential. To sum up: Playing Lego=Good, no matter age or gender. Stupid Parents Stereotyping = Bad

Minifig Customization Workshop Contest
Peppermint_M replied to LuxorV's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
I might dip my toe into decal design. I have a packet of finetip pens and some sticker paper so thats enough for me! The story will certainly be long and complicated though. Sounds like good fun -
Some changes to the forum layout
Peppermint_M replied to Bonaparte's topic in Forum Information and Help
I am afraid I disagree with a few points about Adventurers... I always saw them as somewhere in the 50s or earlier, similar to Indiana Jones, derived from the same adventure serials of that time. I didn't know the characters names (apart from Sam Grant, who for some strange reason everyone persists in calling Johnny Thunder, who is actualy a DC Comics character) The old man was Howard Carter their lady friend was Lara Croft. The Egyptian themed sets were my favourite of all and the adventures occured in a similar space in time as Indy, or slightly pre-WWII. The bad guys spoke with german accents (sorry, that was Indy's influence again) and the mummies were similar to the Scooby Doo guys in rubber masks. (Heck, we called him Shaggy) Therefore I would see it as history. The jungle adventures were in the same period and the Orient ones? Yet again they fit in the 50s or maybe even earlier than that (Colonial) and to have a classic bad guy that looks a whole lot like Ming the Merciless they must have been inspired by those aforementioned saturday morning action cliffhangers at the movie theater (sandwiched between a Loony Toon and the newsreel) and the pulp adventure comics. So while sort of "action-ey" its a lot more like history, set in some romantacised era where the world is still a mystery and dashing square jawed young men uncover untold treasures from desert, jungle and the orient with the plucky news reporter to capture the moment and the learned professor to point the way. Ok, so the dinosaur bit was very left field, but it was a last hurrah for the theme and there wasn't any other mysteriouse lands to explore. It certainly isn't "present day" the cars, the planes, the characters all screamed the mythical 1950s (or earlier). Just my thoughts on the matter. It was my favourite theme back in the day, I'd be sad to see it buried under the flavour of the month. -
Agents and James Bond similarities
Peppermint_M replied to samthelegoman1's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Can we just say that Agents was based on any number of Spy films and series? That's how it seems to me. In the end they are secret agents battling against a larger than life Villian and his henchmen. The theme reminded me of Condorman, with the turbo car and the speedboat, I'd love to make a gypsy caravan to hide my turbo car under. One last thing that I have associated with Agents has inspired my very cool MOC that I am working on... But as mentioned in another topic, it must stay under wraps so as not to give any clues. -

I like the new lists, they make a bit more sense. I like how the discriotions clue you in a bit better as to what goes where (as mentiond elsewhere, I was at a loss to find Agents for a month of membership). I can't wait for the new banners and sub-forums. -
