I have the same modulars as you do and I passed on the Palace Cinema for the very same reason. The Parisian Restaurant is my favorite modular to date and I would certainly recommend it to anyone. On the other hand it is very likely that it will be available for some years to come, so I would recommend getting the older modulars first for anyone who doesn't have them yet. Grand Emporium in perticular as it will likely be discontinued next.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
bjorn77 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I'm on the verge of buying another Pet Shop set, so it would be very interesting to know if the new modular will have similarities. I might hold for a little while. -
Can you post a picture with higher resoluton? It's almost impossible to see anything from that one...
-
I paid 200 euro for my copy from Bricklink a few weeks ago. It's not much more expensive than what the retail price was/is in Sweden for a modular.

They aren't gonna get cheaper, so buy the Fire Brigade while the price is still humane.

OK, thanks for the replies. I will check if I can squeeze in a trip to Charlotte. Another option would be to order online and have them deliver to the Hotel. I live in Sweden and prices are some 50% higher here, so I see this as a good opportunity to save me some money.

I'm going on a business trip to Greensboro NC in a couple of weeks and I would like to buy some Lego if possible. There's a LEGO Store in Charlotte, but I don't think I have have time to go there. Does anybody know any stores that sells Lego in, or close to, Greensboro? The only store I can remember from previous visits is a Barnes & Noble. I'm specifically looking to buy the more exclusive sets like the Mini Cooper and a couple of Modulars. Any help appreciated!

Very good! I would love to put this next to my Fire Brigade. Too bad I only own one copy of the set.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
bjorn77 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Town Hall is good, but still my least favorite of all the modulars I've got so far (FB, GE, PS, TH, PR). Like someone mentioned, it is a bit too easy to build and offers no advanced building techniques. It looks kind of plain, both interior and exterior wise. I like the roof section and the tower and it does make a nice addition to your street. Every town needs a town hall, right? Buy it, but get the other ones first, except for maybe PR since it's newer. -
I've got one of each FB, GE, PS, TH, PR. Planning to buy one more GE and PS for modifications.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

If there would be separate businesses on the different floors (which I'd love), how would entrance access be solved? A stairwell on the back? An elevator? Something else? -

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I think he is referring to the Parisian Restaurant, and he is of course wrong. Smaller != lite. At least if it is as detailed as PR is. -
I bought my Fire Brigade for €200 from BrickLink a few weeks ago. Ever since it was retired, there has been a steady supply of some 200+ copies for sale on Bricklink. I don't foresee the prices to increase a lot in the near future. But I do wish I had bought it when I saw it on sale for €100 a year ago :P

I don't hate minifigs, but I'm not a big fan either. The ones in the City sets are especially dull. For Lego so advanced and detailed as the modular buildings, the minifigs also tends to give it a more childish look than I prefer. However, it is also what makes your street/town/city come alive and not just stay a ghost town. So I keep 'em. And the minifigs in the Death Star is really what makes that set :) Now, onto the Town Hall. I built this set a couple of days ago and I was overall positive to the result. It's a very straight forward and fast build. Nothing too advanced. The Roof section is what makes the set for me. Once built, the building looks pretty good, but it is not until you place it together with the rest of the modulars that it starts to really shine. The bad things: My set was missing two pieces; modified 1x2 bricks in a color I didn't have spares for. It was the first modular set I bought that had missing parts. very annoying! My second issue was with the 6x24 plates used for the floors, which are too long. There's a slight dislocation for each stud, which results in the floor being 1-2 mm wider than the top of the module beneath. This can be seen in the picture below. It also makes the 6x24 plates bend when adding all the 2x10 plates in the same direction. The floor is straightend out when the walls are being buit, but for the roof section, the problem persists. I had to rearrange some of the smaller plates so that they are placed in the opposite direction of the large plates in order to aviod having a concave roof. Has anyone else experienced the same issue with the 6x24 plates? Oops, sorry for hijacking your thread, VintageLegoEra. I should maybe have waited until you had finished your build... :P

By the way, did you simply mirror the shops so that you now have two pet shops side by side, or did you open up the wall inbetween the buildings on the ground floor to create one large shop? I think that's what I would do. For the second and third floor, it makes sense to keep them separate as it is two apartments with, presumably, different owners.
-
The town houses looks very good in mirrored mode. Not so sure about the pet shop though. I might bricklink another town house instead of getting another copy of the full set. By the way, has anyone mirrored and modded the second pet store into some other kind of store?

It's the same part used in the Parisian Restaurant. Black version is plentyful, white is very rare. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=30046

Glass does not exist for the arched windows. I added black lattice for the windows in the pet shop, but for the town house it should be white, and that color is very rare and expensive.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
bjorn77 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
About the mini-modulars; that was the set that got me into the real modulars as well. The building techniques used to achieve the resemblence of the original sets are sometimes ingenious. Using all the small pieces makes it a lot of fun and it's still one of my all-time favorites. On a different note, I've bought a few of the architecture sets. And while they are quite fun to build, they are not very accurate, mostly because of the small scale (especially old style buildings like the Trevi Fountain). They have all gone straight to the parts bin directly after I completed the build. -
Lego 10211 Grand Emporium - New Build & Review
bjorn77 replied to VintageLegoEra's topic in LEGO Town
Modding interior is a less expensive way to keep going between modular releases. And I think it's a lot of fun coming up with new micro builds. Not everyone can afford six GE sets, less have the space to display them :) -
Lego 10211 Grand Emporium - New Build & Review
bjorn77 replied to VintageLegoEra's topic in LEGO Town
I built a clothing rack for the ground floow. For the 2nd floor, I built sin's fantastic espesso bar plus I added shelves with housewares. For the 3rd floor, I added several shelves with various toys (micro builds and minifig utensils like skateboards). Here are the MOC's that inspired me: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=90595 http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=93947&hl=%20grand%20%20emporium&st=50 -
Fantastic looking MOC. Is it motorized, and if so, any vids of it running?

Lego 10211 Grand Emporium - New Build & Review
bjorn77 replied to VintageLegoEra's topic in LEGO Town
I built this a few weeks ago. Love the exterior, but the interior is the worst of the lot. Nothing that 25 euro and 300 bricklinked pieces couldn't help though. :)
