My second and maybe last entry. Modern-art Turtle by SteampunkDoc, on Flickr
-
Yeah, I already see that I have no chance at winning. Also had trouble staying inside the size limits, so his face kinda just stops. Still, here's Tile-Face. A giant mecha used as a portable base by space colonists and scientists when exploring aquatic planets. The strong outer shell allows it to endure any unfavorable weather, and the four legs grant it steady (though not speedy) mobility through the swamps and bogs. It can also transform into flight-mode for quicker transport, as well as for travel between planets. "Tile-face" The Terrific Turtle Titan by SteampunkDoc, on Flickr

Student Enrollment: Pre Production
SteampunkDoc replied to Prince Manic's topic in Brick Flicks & Comics
Sure! Don't forget though, the purpose of threads like these is to follow the tutorial/lessons and then do the assignments, and not as much to just get general advice or post tests. Think homework for school, only a lot more fun. If you want more general advice or ideas, send me a PM and I may be able to help in more detail. Brickfilms don't need big sets and a lotta bricks. A baseplate, a minifigure or two, and a piece of paper should work just fine for starters. Perhaps you should start simple, with what you have now, before moving on to more advanced and complex animations. P.S. You probably don't need to quote my posts, they're right above yours and easy to find. -

Yes, I'd consider the LEGO Movie as being a licensed theme, though I'd like to clarify that I meant something not based on a pre-existing franchise or story. A lot of people think they'll have trouble coming up with something totally original, so this is to help them overcome that and see that it's really not that hard. And yes, splitting a larger project into smaller goals is the way to do it, but it's still a TON of work and I've seen quite a number bite off more than they could chew. So again, just make sure you can finish whatever you start. Scripting is a tough phase to master, but that's what the tutorial is for. It's to help you figure out how to think up ideas and get them into writing, and ultimately into a form that can be put into film. The brickfilming courses will help with production, but also consider looking at some of the others to help you with developing characters and plot, as well as getting more creative with other aspects of storytelling. -

Hey, it's great that you're getting into brickfilming, and I'm anticipating seeing your work. Thing is, if you're just starting out, you may wanna practice on something a bit smaller than a "feature-length" film. Maybe something shorter so you can get a good handle on the whole process in a shorter amount of time. Still, it's always great to see more people join the hobby. One tiny note, I did ask for entries to not be licensed themes, and be something more original to yourself. And since you have to wait a bit on the Ghostbusters film anyway, maybe you could take this opportunity to try your hand at a little something else. Sound good? -
Good job! I'm impressed on how you got over Hulk's limited joints, and also didn't fall into the trap of making one so much more powerful than the other. t helped things stay interesting, and kept each character true to character without seeming to weaken or strengthen one or the other because of personal bias or favoritism. That being said, Hulk seemed a bit too talkative than normal. The animation is good, as were the sets. The destruction of the environment was also well handled. Some of the effects could have been improved, but overall it's a very nice short and I'm looking forward to see more.

Bricks by the Bay Brickfilm Festical (and Competition)
SteampunkDoc replied to seaotter71's topic in Brick Flicks & Comics
The no licensed themes rule is good as it promotes original thought in the crafting of characters, settings and stories. It's the no longer than two minutes rule that I have an issue with. It is incredibly difficult to craft a story, develop a plot, and have a nice climax in such a limiting time. Four minutes would be a good compromise, it's just long enough, but still not so long as to burn all of your time showing one or two films. Either way, I'll be entering one of my creations, it's just to bad I won't be there to see the others. Also, thanks for allowing others to enter and win even if not present. that will certainly open it up to a lot more talent. -
Seven. I just now had a chance to open mine, and there are seven of us missing torsos. But like the others, I have no need of a replacement. There are plenty of extra bodies in my collection. Free Lego is fantastic, even if it was the odd day prize and not the even. It seems like only the odd day prize folks are missing torsos, right? And not even all of them, only a few.

OK, I'm going to be the odd guy and say you don't need a big expensive camera. If you are only going to be brickfilming with this, I'd say go with a Logitech C920. The webcam has great quality, is cheaper, lighter and easier to use, plus it already has all the needed manual controls. Of course, if you want to take normal pictures as well, then go with a "real" camera. But for only brickfilming, a webcam would be (IMHO) a better investment. That being said, a webcam has a fixed depth-of-field, you can't change out the lens, and it doesn't have optical zoom. And while a "real" camera does lend better image quality, more depends on the lighting and set-up and a webcam can still look great. I've been brickfilming for years, and have yet to feel the need to upgrade from my webcam. If I were you, I'd seriously consider that option.

Turtles have landed here too. And to quote the estimable Bible Baggins: "“Thag you very buch!”"

Yay! Thanks again CopMike, you are a wonderful person. Now let's just see how long that glorious package takes to reach me from half-way around the world....
-
You could each send him the address of the other person, and he would be none the wiser. And speaking of PM's, he hasn't read mine yet. Guess he's just saving them all up until shipping time. Also, the more I think about it, the more I like my prize. It's so random and different from what I normally collect that I think it is deserving of a special spot on the shelf. So thanks!
-
Two words: Yeah! Bummer! Yeah!-I got a prize! Bummer!-I got that one that I care least about. But hey free Lego. Still, what was the answer on being able to trade whole sets After re-reading the rules, I found the clause saying no swapping. If it's a no, that's fine, I'll gladly take a complete Turtle collection. Sending PM now.

As was said, the overall quality on the plastics is lower, and the quality control itself is lower. (Bricks may not be identically shaped, colors range all over the place, more likely to get mis-molded parts, Ect...) While Megabloks has improved over the years, it's still far inferior to our beloved Lego. They tend towards larger more specialized molds, and more molded/detailed (and articulated) figures. This leads to less re-usability, but better (In theory...Not always in practice) looks for the original set. Mega has come up with some interesting ideas, but more often than not they simply rip-off whatever Lego has done. They aren't as picky when it comes to licences, leading to stuff like Halo and Need for Speed and the army-style themes. While a lot of people think that they are cheaper, it truly depends on the set. But looking at the overall picture, Lego is a MUCH better bang for your buck. I don't get all the Mega hate going on, since it only takes a little fact finding to easily prove the Lego superiority. That being said, Mega's differences do appeal to some people, and there's nothing wrong with that. The articulated figures are kinda cool, and some folks may be into one of their licensed themes. It all depends on what you want out of it.

Congrats to the winners! But as for the rest of us, we only have 22 days of intense anticipation left!
-
Prize 1 is my favorite by far, Prize 3 is pretty cool, Prize 5 is nice, but with my luck I'll hit Prize 6. (Or nothing at all.) Still, free Lego is free Lego. You won't hear me complaining. Thanks for organizing this and proving such amazing prizes!
-
That is pretty strange! The rock work is good, and I love the ground/path details. That's also a creative way to portray blood. It's a great little scene that raises some questions, but still looks nice. I'm not sure where it belongs, since everything but the skellys is fairly medieval, but I'm sure you have your reasons for posting it here.

Every good SteampunkDoc needs a fancy blimp, so here's mine.

Wait, did I just see 'free' and 'Lego' in the same sentence? As well as 'random winners' which means I actually have a chance? Bring it on! Can't wait to get started on my entry!

What was the last movie you watched?
SteampunkDoc replied to EbonHawk's topic in Culture & Multimedia
The Adventures of Tintin A wonderful little CGI film that is very top-notch in my opinion. I've not heard of the franchise before, so didn't have any bias for or against the characters, but that only proved that the movie is more than capable of standing on it's own. It's realistic enough to take some parts seriously, but also cartoon-y enough to still have fun. It had some great one-liners, and while the ending felt a bit off, it's not eough to riun the rest of the film. Overall it's a great movie, especially for a family movie night. And better yet, it's free on Amazon Prime! -
BrickFlick: Predation (A Halloween Special)
SteampunkDoc replied to mysteriouspi's topic in Brick Flicks & Comics
Pretty good. If it had one main flaw, it would have been the gasping noises. His silence would probably been more effective. Otherwise, well done. Shooting the pumpkin seemed a bit odd, but the sets, effects and animation were all nice. -
Ah, this is what I get for not knowing the comics story. OK, I feel a bit better about some elements, but am still at least a little wary. Never cared for what I heard about 'Civil War', but if anything can change that, it would be the movies. That being said, I still don't like the music. You can get much better. I know I'm entitled to my own opinion on most of this, I'm just sorry for it being so uninformed and rash. My mistake. On a positive note, I am loving every bit of Thor 2 I see, so I'll just keep my eyes on that for now.
-
OK, not really that impressed. #1, Why is Black Widow in this so much, and why is she trying to hook Cap up with a girl? #2, Why is Caps shield now color-less, and why is he out of uniform so much? #3, Are we supposed to like Shield, or hate it? #4, Why the generic rock music? Could they not find anything better? And now spoilers Ok, I'll calm down now, but I will finish with this. Thank you Marvel for Thor 2. It looks like a much better sequel IMHO. Of course, I haven't seen either one yet, but my money is on The Dark World being the better of the two. Winter Solder just smells too much like that Iron Man 3 formula of 'flash-bang' smoke and mirrors that end up blowing up in everyones faces. [/Rantover, for now.] Anyway, feel free to rip this apart, just like Iron Man 3, I'd like to love the movie. It just doesn't look that great right now.

LOTR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion
SteampunkDoc replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
You know, I actually like Beorn's design now. The first back pic was less than impressive, the first front pic was horrible, but this shot redeems everything. He looks good, and I'm ready to see him in action. As to the sets, I may get the Mirkwood Elf Army, it looks like a great deal. And Thandy looks amazing. Also, bunches of pretty elves! Dol Guldor Ambush looks decent, but I was hoping it would have been a bit smaller and cheaper. Especially since I'd more-or-less only be getting it for Beorn. Dol Guldor Battle looks really sweet, and I'd love to get it, but am not ready to drop a lot on another lego set just yet. But if it goes on sale low enough I may. Laketown, Eh, I love the Laketown figures, and it's a solid set, but not high enough of my 'We needs it' list.- 7,499 replies
