I am primarily a system-based builder myself. But I did build some rather technical creations as well. Recreating the actual mechanics of a subject is usually the first step and it's pretty cool if you can make it function the same way the real thing does. However I often end up doing my own mechanisms due to limitations (space in the model/reliability) I design for aesthetics and then I do everything I can to make the desired mechanism fit. When it comes to aesthetics, the exterior of the model, I usually go for system wedge plates and tiles since I really dislike technic panels because of all the gaps. System gives you studs instead though. That really is a personal preference. When working the mechanisms, Technic is the obvious choice. However I have found myself using System-based solution for mechanisms where Technic simply would not do and that had nothing to do with aesthetics either. Some SNOTted System plate can often provide a lot more stiffness to a frame than Technic beams can. In some instances I was able to create more compact solutions using System rather than Technic. I choose my subjects for the challenge they offer or in my latest cases, because it really fits in my professional context. When it comes to my more technical models, my LEGO approach is not that different than my engineering approach...Or the other way around . I choose Technic over System when I want to validate a new mechanism, to test stuff, eventhough in those cases it might not end up in the final model. Weight is an important factor as well, especially when building larger models I find you can get better structural strength with less weight using Technic. My tip would be to use real-life mechanisms as your starting point and try recreating these in the brick, either Technic or System or a combination, whatever suits you best. I believe it would be a great waste to only consider one rather then both. -
I've begun working on the digitalisation of my mods. I've discovered a mistake where the upper quarters connect via the ladder to the cargo bay so I'll need to fix that first.

Thank you, you mean System style "technicprojects-style" headlights Well, the FH is Volvo's flagship so one could argue that it is some kind of ship 😅. Thanks. I had seen the Volvo FH Aero cab a couple of times before it was publicly presented but I hadn't decided to actually build a lego version of it until the weekend before the press release Last week my model premiered at the Volvo Trucks Factory in Ghent, where I work. I'm not so happy with how the upper front grille turned out, my previous model really was spot on, in fact I dare even say that that one is the best out there when it comes to that section. But! There is a good reason why this one's upper grille is rather mediocre, I managed to include a cool feature that would not have been possible on the previous model; Cab Tilt! I have more pictures in my Brickshelf gallery, for some reason I am no longer able to embed those in here. You can check these out once the gallery is public: Brickshelf. As you can see in the video, the model is motorized: A System PoweredUp hub sits under the cab, an L motor for drive and angular M motor for steering are fitted in the wheelbase area. The model features front and pusher axle steering. However due to the unbalanced weight distribution I have experienced a lot of issues with the driving stability. The weight on the front axle is massive, giving the rear driven axle a hard time to find some grip on the road. A reflection I had; I'm quite happy with the fifth wheel, it's the first one I ever made and I wanted it to actually look like a real fifth wheel. Strangely no one else seems to care much about a realistic looking fifth wheel. Don't forget to check out my Volvo FH Hooklift!

The mods I did should be easy to do in studio but since they are really integrated in the original set, I should really need to have studio file of the complete original set first. If I had that I'd happily provide my mods .

I love it! Almost looks creature-like, loving the teeth on the prow. I think a white background would work better to better present this awesome ship though.

I love it, I'd suggest you do an elaborate photoshoot before you dismantle it. Would be a shame not to have a detailed record of such a fine vessel.

Update time! I ultimately decided to open up the lower hold again and build a small interior section there. I took out a section on the widest part of the hull, as the concentration of bulkhead is the lowest there. It's still not much but it's something. When I was clicking the gun deck into place, I realized it would be a wasted opportunity not to do anything with the lower hold. Interior on the orlop deck is completed. Near the bow there is the sick bay (or for the dutchies amongst us; De ziekenboeg bevindt zich in de boeg) coming up next are the gun deck and the start of the walls.

Lovely frigate, I'd love to see some sails on her but I supposed there aren't any because of the designer program requirements . Excellent job! Makes me want to dig up that WIP frigate I have lying around somewhere and continue building.

i think you just need to decide what you are going for I think. If you're going for an Armada themed ship, as in the lower picture, I would suggest to replace the dual coloured hull by one of single colour. Either a completely brown one or maybe even a white one (the new type hulls).

Mast positions and height seem about right I'd say. I've always found that Cross Bone Clipper colour scheme interesting, do you have the original set? It would be nice to see it alongside your MOC, like a pirate fleet .- 23 replies

This looks quite promising, I might be able to use that on my WIP ship. I don't like the studs from the 1x1 technic bricks showing though, essential to keep everything together I suppose. Good luck with your large ship!
