[REVIEW] 42056 - Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Kumbbl replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
well, up to date this is my interim concusion about 42056 Porsche: - one of the best looking supercar - regardless by TLG or by MOCer - out of the box too expensive because too many issues preventing it from working BUT with the following MODs there is another story: Blakbirds Step-5-MOD (http://www.eurobrick...75#entry2575969): Fixes the probably strongest issue, the way too much friction in the drive train preventing the whole model from working - fixes a mission critical issue Attikas change-over-catches-fix (http://www.eurobrick...50#entry2579365): Fixes the probably second strongest issue, the double engaging issue which blocks the whole drive train - fixes a mission critical issue and makes gear switching quite 100% reliable. Probably this is enough to make the shifting satisfying and reliable - but in addition you can add optionally this 5-step-procedure (developed by Didumos69) to make the gear shifting 100% save for sure: http://www.eurobrick...c=133743&st=250 supertechnicmans fix for the infinite gear shifting issue (http://www.eurobrick...25#entry2577440): This issue is not mission critical but annoying Paul Boratkos fix for the wrong gear sequence (see Jim review in the first posting which explains the solution or see there: http://www.eurobrick...25#entry2576387): This issue is not mission critical but annoying. A sequential gearbox shoud change gears in 1 -> 2 --> 3 --> 4 Didumos69' fix for the missing HOG (http://www.eurobrick...25#entry2581074): the steering wheel inside the cabin is quite unreachable for a male-hand... so this is not really mission critical but at least very annoying. So this fix adds great value to playability and it is well braced and well integrated so it does not pollute the great look of the car Max supercars fix for the 4R problem (http://www.eurobrick...25#entry2578360 - or a slightly better integrated version of Max' idea - made by Appie: http://www.eurobrick...50#entry2581443): This is not an issue at all but a very unrealistic implementation of a gearbox. This fix makes the whole gearbox way more realistic Jetros MOD for easy unmounting/remounting the bodywork (http://www.eurobrick...3): Not an issue but enhances the value of the model a lot because only without bodywork all the inner workings can be watched. costs: 1. 2 LBG bushes --> 0€ 2. no additonal parts --> 0€ - with the optional additonal MODs (s.a.) about 30 ct 3. 1 2x4 liftarm --> 5ct 4. no additional parts --> 0€ 5. probably not more than 2 - 3€ for needed parts --> 2,5€ 6. probably not more than 1€ for the needed parts --> 1€ 7. some pins with bush --> 20ct So lets round down to 5€ - which is just 5% of the retail prize. So for more or less NO additional costs you get - an incredible good looking car with some really useful new parts for forthcoming supercar MOCs - IMHO a 100% reliable working and very realistic (4D+N+R where R is only possible if in first gear) sequential gearbox with nifty paddle shifting --> there are not many 100% reliable working seq. gearboxes out there if any (e.g. Sheepos are very interesting designs but are not fully reliable and need a lot of fine tuning) - for me the limitation to just 4 gears is not critical... - a model with reasonable playability (HOG) and possibility to demonstrate the features (unmounting the bodywork). Until this MOD-state the 42056 is IMHO already worth the very high price of 300€ (without any discount which you will probably get by sellers like Amazon) and results in a very satisfying model. So i would call these 7 MODs the essential MODs which should and could be applied by every owner. And i'm very confident that in the near future there will be some MODs which will eliminate the remaining (but surely not serious) issue of no proper front axle layout (no Ackermann etc.). Then the whole car can already compete with the best supercar MOCs out there, at least IMHO. All features on top (e.g. RWS connected to the gear-selection) will be nice to have and would raise the bar higher for supercars... Interim conclusion: out of the box the model is really bad, at least it misses accurate and carefull QA... but now there are no-cost-MODs which turn the model in a very good supercar...and which will be the basis (at least its parts) of some wonderful supercar MOCs designed by the usual suspects ;-) Just my 2ct -

@Pvdb: concerning the full 90 degree rotation: this is very probably designed right by TLG but the instructions are wrong; see the fix of Attika in the Porsche MOD thread which ensures the 90 degree rotation. This is a verY ingenious solution i would say ans the 8th gears seem to be really no drawback... -

yeah, maybe it is inauthentic... but the always praised 8880 (i love it!) is even more inauthentic: - no AWS-system would have been implemented in lreal life as done with 8880: with this RWS you would never be able to drive fast onto a highway and switching lanes without crashing immediately - the gearbox has the best gear-switcher up to date but the internals are completey inauthentic - well, the front axle has Ackermann and the best hubs up to date but the rest isn't a more elaborated suspension layout than 42046 I believe i know what you mean: TLG has missed the chance to move the bar to a higher level (no diffenrent sized clutch gears etc...), and here i agree with you - i would have appreciated if TLG has shown us "where the hammer hangs concerning supercars". Well, they haven't. But do you really think that the target customers 42056 would really appreciate stuff like king-pin, caster etc... most of them hasn't heard these terms not to mention understanding them... i have build e.g. Nat Kuipers wonderful Predator MOC and this models has all these nifty front axle stuff - but what should i say - it is nice to build but at the end of the day this is nothing which let your jaws drop or make you smile from one ear to the other... 42056 has not mainly been designed for you suspension- and undercarriage-pros here at EB ;-) well, a model with not working gearbox would be completely inacceptable, for everyone - and without blakbirds step-5-MOD it would be so - but with this MOD applied (and also with that one of Jethro for easy unmounting bodywork) IMHO the model has reached a level which will satisfy a lot of the targeted "audience"... if it is worth 300 bucks, well, this must be decided personally by each technic lover - it is steep, no question, but with the usual discounts from amazon etc. for me it is because i'm sure 42056 will be an essential base of some wonderful forthcoming MOCs... -

well, this reply and blakbirds comment give me a great hope that with blakbirds step-5-mod at least the friction issue is more or less solved (carefully aligned the pins with pin hole preconditioned) - and IMHO this was/is the biggest flaw with the Porsche... im sure quite all other pitfalls or cons of the Porsche can be solved by several MODs which can each owner invent/apply... -

they simply have to choose these of their own designers who have not stared at the model for 2-3 years because they were not involved in the design of THAT model - do not tell me that all technic designers of TLG are involved in all models.... it would be a shame or even a evidence of incapacity of a company like TLG if they are not able to staff the whole qa process out of their own grid... So again: TLG has first of all to do her home work - if this has be done and sets without such obvious teething troubles are released then - and only then - they should think about adding some AFOLs to their already existing pretests - currently AFAIK these pretests are only playability-tests and not building tests and are also done only by children - maybe it would be a good idea to enhance such a pretest espceially for the flagships with great attention by AFOLS... But first TLG should improve its internal quality processes -
[REVIEW] 42056 - Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Kumbbl replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
getting ideas by crowd sourcing is something completely different than using some AFOLs for pretesting products... alpha and beta tests done per customers are a usual approach especially in the software business but this is a complete different story compared to a product like a lego set... i never heard that a car company offers their new cars (e.g. Porsche) for alpha testing ;-) this is done by professional drivers employed by the company - and this is the right way, also for TLG - as already said: this is a matter of quality management, quality assurance and quality control and the related processes... -

Kumbbl replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
despite the fact that this would be cool for guys like Eric or Sariel, but there is really no need for TLG to do this - they have just to make their home work concerning quality control, ie. some guys not involved in the designing process of the model have to prebuild it following the instructions carefully and also carefully testing AFTER EACH STEP if all things run smoothly etc... if they would have done this thoroughly then i'm sure they would have found the BI error concerning the gear sequence as well as the friction problem in Step 5 which Eric has pointed out... the problem with this set was not not to involve some AFOLs in the process but simply sloppiness. Don't tell me that you need an AFOL to found this mistakes if you have professional technic designers who do nothing else than designing and building some technic stuff all over the day... the knowledge and experience is there for sure but meybe they have to rethink their quality control processes... just my 2ct -

Kumbbl replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
wow, blakbird, thanks a lot - would be really great if this would REALLY fix the gearbox issues. with REALLY i mean not only for the chassis but also with fully mounted bodywork because often the weight of bodyworks drives things/friction going worse.... - whereas the stalling should be not affected by this fix if i understand the whole stuff right - because the stalling is caused by the problem that the 2L liftarms moving the driving rings are not ensured always staying in exact 90 DG and multiplies, right? for this you would need a mechanism which hold back the changing mechanism in discrete 90 DEG positions somewhere between the nifty paddeling box at the steering wheel and and driving rings. But fixing the friction issue with your fix is already a big leap forward. Thanks a lot for pointing this out and sharing with us! BTW: shame TLG for these bad qualty control but on the other hand i for myself find it good that building this model seems to be a real challenge, means to find the right MODs to make thw whole stuff working and not only stupidly assembling some plastic --> from this POV the 16+ is justified IMO ;-) -

I suspect Anio just to lead us astray so everybody has low expectations and then all praising reviews come out at june 1st ;-) -
42056 - Porsche Speculation
Kumbbl replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Probably there were too high expectations for this first "ultimate" technic model and probably the model will disappoint a lot of people at least them who have already built such great suoercar MOCs of nathanael kuipers, Paul, Pvdb and others. We all expected TLG to show us "where the hammer hangs" concerning designing a supercar... Well, maybe TLG failed. Well, but who cares? I for myself not because i'm 100% sure that one or more of outstanding technic MOCers will use the new valuable parts of the Porsche (mudgards, frictionless driving ring connectors etc) to make at least a MOD which adresses the pitfalls of 42056 or even a complete new supercar MOC using these new parts. And to be able to build these forthcoming MODs or MOCs i will Need the 42056 and rherefore i will buy one, at least one ;-), regardless of the verdicts of the forthcoming reviews... And i am sure that i will not regret it...regardless how good or bad the Porsche out of the box is... Just my 2ct -

Kumbbl replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
yes, this would be my main question: could there be enough room for adding RWS? I'm hopping for a somehow real "Ultimate 42056" (in the sense of Juergens Ultimate MODs/MOCs) or GT3 RS by one of the incredible talented supercar-MOCer out there... -
[MOC] Aston Martin DB11
Kumbbl replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Jeroen you asked for further features. Well here is one which i miss in the forthcoming Porsche: 4 wheel steering but in a smart way: at low-speed, the rear wheels steers in the opposite direction to that of the front wheels at high-speed, the rear wheels steers in the same direction to that of the front wheels What so you think? This would be unique in a supercar because old 8880 has only the former variant -

HoG is Hand of God, ie a second steering wheel mostly placed somewhere better accessible than that one in front of the driving seat... Useful for better playability -

One question: could this marvel also be built with two PF IR receivers instead of sbricks? Is this an easy MOD?- 220 replies
