strange argumentation... if they knew the problem then it would have been their job to fix it - and tell me not, that full time designers at TLG are not able to find a fix - @Didumos69 has postet a fix (even if unproven) after about a week after the release, just based onto pics.... how much better are the conditions for a TLG-designer?! - hey, we are not talking about a not perfectly closed gap in the bonnet but we are talking about the most basic function of this model (together with steering): If this function fails the model can more or less not be used - unless for being displayed but nothing else... This attitude to rush out the high prize model despite knowing serious faults does not match with the communicated quality standards of TLG - and an answer of AR in the interview like "Everything has to be right. It’s a Bugatti. Everything has to reach the top level, both when it comes to authenticity and functionality. Nothing is left to chance." is then just a joke, a bad joke.... -

100% agree. As I already said - the more or less unsteerabilty and the failing front suspension are the main faults of this product - all other stuff is at least ok or even very well done and pleasing but these two are unacceptable - at least IMHO... -

yes, do so! The latest incarnation of @jb70 Pimp up my Porsche model is highly recommended - IMHO one of the best supercars out there... enjoy! -

@Appie, let us agree that we agree that the Chiron is a step forward compared to the porsche, or maybe two steps ;-) The Porsche fails not only in the gearbox (here multiple) but also in a too weak front suspension (yes i know, also with the Porsche there are your three groups ;-).... so, yes, you are right. And i'm far from ranting about the complete set - i have already said, that it has wonderful genes and is IMHO worth a buying - at least for me who can fix some things for myself. Yes, the Chiron has two inacceptable pit-falls but it has also some really positive aspects: gearbox, the new parts here, awesome looks, clever spoiler kinematic (despite this poor key-driven solution) and and and... but: nevertheless these serious pit-falls can not be whitewashed.. ;-) -

no, you haven't done any errors - this comes from the huge amount of driving rings and clutch gears involved in all forward speeds - and this is cumulated to quite an amount of backlash (each driving-ring/clutch adds a quarter of a turn) - and because the reverse gear is omitting all these clutches/driving rings the engine reacts immediatelly... so, no worries, all is fine ;-) -

yes, this Pimped Porsche is great - i have build it (even contributed some small details ;-) - perfect supercar and model. But such a perfection is IMHO not necessary, because this Porsche version is the full fletched incarnation where more or less all fixes and all great additional features of our community have been compiled in. I would also be very satiesfied if TLG would release a well working model, well working at least in its basic functions. As others already said: It's part of the fun to improved a model even more by some moding. But - at least not for me - it is NOT part of the fun (and in no way for some 10 years old children) to invest 10h building and then getting a model scratching the ground and not being able to be pushed along cause of the inaccessibility of the steering wheel - this is part of frustration nothing else. -

In real life in automotive industry parts have an exact specification so all instances of such a parts behave exactly equal, so all screws shocks etc are well specified so all resulting cars behaves more or less equally... In contrary to that lego parts like the spring or pins are not so precise, means there is a small tolerances concerning the force of the springs and also concerning the friction force of pins. So for me this explain easily why there are these three groups whcih you have correctly mentioned, @Appie. It is really simple, some are lucky and got a set with spring and pin parts which have exactly the right amount of force rsp. friction so the suspension works, at least NOW (group 1). Others are not so lucky (group 2) and some of us have really bad luck (group 3)... But for me this is a design fault, if such a basic and most important feature as the front-suspension relys onto such fragile stuff! A well done front axle has a geometry which equals such tolerances (which results in slightly differing part-behavior) - and therefore works always! Therefore: Yes, this is really so: The front suspension does not work as it should, period, no wait, exclamation mark! ;-) as @aol000xw said above: " now I try to picture myself at 6 again, building the Chiron with great effort and almost can feel the sadness wondering what did I do wrong. Now show your shiny Chiron to someone not into Lego and rationalize, justify and explain why it behaves like a stone in a pond where it should be a working marvel of Technic" - very well spoken THAT MUST NOT HAPPEN for a company with such a high quality claim as with TLG, again period! -

IMHO you are missing one important aspect: I'm quite sure that no one has expected a "perfect" (what is this?) set 42083 and at least for me some room for improvements is absolutely fine. And its not a discussion about "this or that feature is missing" or "this or that gap could have been better filled" and so on (these complaints are somehow exhausting i admit).... Nothing of them has any relevance for me: Every one can improve these "missing" things if he/she really needs them. And the price is steep but ok, it is as it is, buy it or pass it - your decision, very simple. BUT: What i can expect from a 370€ TECHNIC model (in the sense, that technic is meant to be moved and not only to be displayed) is that the most basic functions needed for a car are at least designed so, that they work. And IMHO the most basic functions of a car are its suspension, if there is any build in (or with other word: the car MUST not scratch the ground floor) and a steering which can be steered also by hands older than 5 years: And in both respects the Chiron fails. These mediocre (crappy would be also an appropriate term) implementation of these most basic features of a supercar are MY only complaints but IMHO these are very justifiable complaints because these are product faults - at least if the model is meant to be more than a display model or parts pack: If it is only meant to be displayed than TLG should promote it exactly so and all is fine... If the real chiron would have a front-suspension that would not work than each buyer would park its new car direct before the Bugatti head quarter, throw his car key onto the desk and shout: "go away with this scrap and give me back my 2,5 million of bucks" - but probably most of Chiron buyers would not complain if there engine would contain 3 crankshafts as long as it produces enough horse power to drive faster than 400 km/h and have a roaring sound... i'm sure you get the analogy to the 42083 Chiron and which are justifiable complaints and which ones are just ranting... just MY 2 ct very well spoken, i agree 100%... -

it's even the other way around: The target group for that incarnation of the Chiron can only be adult fans of that real car which are proud to put it onto the shelf or their job desk... most of the children who get THIS chiron as a present for example will BE very disappointed because this thing can actually (in its final state) nothing more than looking awesome (i admit it looks awesome) - so if the target group are really children then the set is a non-starter... I can imagine only two groups of people who can be happy with this set: adults who just want to build once and then display and childs/adulds who want and are able to MOD the model so that it becomes play- and useable... as already said: a supercar with a non working suspension and with a non accessible steering-wheel and a very hard accessible gear-selector IS useless - and it is not so hard to design a HoG which is removable or so cleverly hidden that it does not pollute the exterior of a car... "HoG" for gear switching without polluting the looks is not so easy i have to admit - so this would be an acceptable compromise if the geear-switching mechanism is not really easy accessible... but reasonable accessible steering and a working suspensions are MUSTs and should never pass the internal QA if they fail... otherwise it would be in fact better to make a model team model with perfect lines and an admitted display-focus... -

Of course you can see the technic in the Arocs, at least a lot of them, same for the Unimog... but for me the hiding is ok but what is not ok, that the technic is actually not useable in some main usage-aspects of a car: steering and suspension - and gear switching is at least very hard accessible... Anyway: For me is the same as with the Porsche: Great model, but not out of the box. -

Kumbbl replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
In brief: He says the Chriron is not technic at all because at the end nothing of the technical gems is visible and also hardly useable - the focus of a technic set should be the visible and enjoyable technic... In addition he complains about things have been done wrong (e.g. a W16 which is in fact a V8 plus 2 4R engines) and he suggest, if lego can do technic not correct then they should pass ... he suggest the chiron should have been released as a Model team (creator expert nowadays) which could resemble the forms much better... His main critic is the prize - the thing is way overpriced - he says: After July, when the set has been arrived in his shop, he will offer it for about 300€... Well, i admit in some aspects i agree with him buf of course i agree NOT with the "it is not technic" - this monster IS Technic but it is a technic for just displaying and not for using and watching it - and this is not the technic in the sense of the technic line as it was born in the late seventies... My overall opinion: The model out of the box is only meant for being displayed because you can really nothing do with it (unaccessible and therefore unusable steering, not working front suspension, completely hidden gearbox also with a very hard accessible paddle-shifter) and you can also nothing demonstrate with it. BUT: The model has very good genes and could be evolved probably into a very good model but this needs some MODs.... -
I would be interested in every approach to improve the front-suspension, regardless if other pieces are needed - yours sound already promising, would be great if could post some pics or hints what has to be done... If your approach works for me too than i have a good hope that the Chiron can evolve into a great model by just some moderate MODs: DugaldlC MOD for front suspension Appies / Didumous69 approach for preventing switching from 8 --> 1 and from 1 to 8 HoG should be quite easy With just these MODs and a carefully building of the car the result should be a very good model - far from perfect, but well useable und well working... For a quite perfect model IMHO at least the following would be needed in addition: Ackerman-steering spoiler driven by gear-switching display which gear currently active - IMHO this was already an essential MOD for the Porsche and that one just had 4 sequential speeds - but a 8-speed sequential gearbox without a gear-indicator is IMHO nonsense better doors, lockable prevention from switching to reverse unless 1st gear is active better engine drivetrain where the three crank-shafts are all dead-ends of the complete drive-train (even better would be an engine with only one crank-shaft but i doubt that this is really possible and well working with current available parts)
-
Yes... and IMHO it is also not really easy to ensure that you can only switch from 1st to neutral rsp reverse - as with the Porsche and its 4 speed gearbox this was easy by blocking the switching knobwheel suitable - but because with a 8 speed gearbox the switching knobs make not just one but two full cycles when switching once completely all speeds you would need a mechanism which "counts" these two cycles - maybe a gearrack which slides slightly after each gear change and which appropriately prevents the DNR box from being switchable unless when 1st gear is selected... @Appie: how has the DB11 of Jeroen solved this (if it has)?

Regardless if friction is involved (either way) or a too high spreading in the shock-production: a well done Lego axle should be based on an adequate geometry and therefore should be somehow tolerant for a slight stiffness bandwidth and should of course in no way have to much friction or - even worse - rely on a certain amount of friction - all friction pins have different friction force.. the TLG designer responsible for the Chiron should't invest all his brainpower into the gearbox monster but should have left something over for other important components of a well working car, e.g. A front axle- which is IMHO almost more important for good playability than the gearbox... but as already said: playability seems to have not the highest priority for these UCS cars.., and for just being beauty on the shelf you can also build in a spewed out axle design... doesn't matter then... -

Replacing the blue 3L friction pins by tan frictionless could be worth a try for the Chiron - could be that friction prevents the front from coming up after compressing... -

Kumbbl replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Exactly as with mine --> faulty and for the weight inadequate design, no doubt... if the car should only rest on display then this might not be an issue but if anybody wants to see/demonstrate the technic then this is a busted flush.... and because now both UCS technic sets have this mediocre (to use an euphemism) front axle design for me it is a fact: both, Porsche and Bugatti are meant to be displayed on the shelf and ONLY be displayed on the shelf... Another argumentation for just a display model: the missing HOG. IMHO a Lego supercar MUST have a hog- to avoid polluting the design the hog could simply be removable, nothing easier than that... the removable hog could be stored under the bonnet e.g. but as is the Bugatti is quite unsteerable - at least by not childish hands... i will buy the Bugatti because I'm convinced it has wonderful genes to be not only an awesome beauty but also a well performing and even impressing featured car... but I'm also convinced that the latter one needs some serious mods... out of the box it is quite unplayable - as the Porsche was too... but: obviously both are not meant to be playable at least not with high priority... -

IMHO this front suspension in Sariels Video drags in fact on the ground and has more or less zero travel after fully compressing ... so THIS front suspension IS a problem - as that one of the Porsche was too ... maybe the shock absorbers have a small stiffness range so the problem occurs not everywhere (i.e. in all 42056) in the same manifestation but overall the front axle of the Porsche is an inadequate design - how the front axle/suspension should perform is shown by @Didumos69 errata or @jb70 wonderful Porsche pimpup... and the Bugatti has the same inherent problem.... at least judged by the video... -
42083 - Bugatti Chiron
Kumbbl replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Disagree... on real life a suspension sags a certain travel when resting. So a wheel can absorb bumps as well as potholes... but in no way a real suspension doesn't come up to its rest state after being fully compressed - and exactly this misbehavior is shown by the front axle in Sariels vid ... well I do not expect a lego suspension to behave as a real suspension but I do expect that it can handle the car weight and is not completely under dimensioned... and exactly this is the Porsche front suspension (and it seems (at least) also the Bugatti one): not able to handle the car weight and therefore useless... -

Kumbbl replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Sariel: thanks for very informative review... main disappointment for me: sagging front suspension - and doubt sariel has build it wrong because Porsche has the same issue when correctly build - this is really a no go IMHO, which should not pass internal QA of TLG... overall: awesome look, great new parts, (very) well done single solutions but overall out of the box just a display model... as with the Porsche: is crying for MODs, maybe not as loud as the 911 but definitely crying... ;) -

Maybe (or hopefully) but not for sure. Remember the Porsche which has a wrong gear sequence when build correctly with the BI... anyway: we will see after sariel has finished his live build...
