Oh boy. TLG had the chance to send out an apology, own up to their mistake, offer a solution, but no they just shot themselves in the foot. Only way I'd ever buy this set is at a steep discount. Let's hope that they learn from this and make the next "Ultimate Technic" set better

Fantastic review Sariel. I can only repeat what others have said, but I appreciate your honesty. I think I'm going to pass on this set for now

Great review Jim. Although the set may diappoint, you never disappoint with the quality of your reviews. Your pictures look as crisp as ever. I'm still undecided about this set honestly. TLG tried to make this special, but maybe it needed a little more time in development IMO

Big bump, but I just built this car a few weeks ago. This was one of the first cars I saw when I joined the Technic Communtity, and I've always wanted to build it Few thoughts: The car is great, its instantly recognizable and has great functions. Its fun to build, never really challenging, but complicated and dense. The chassis is very sturdy and the final model looks great. There's a few things I don't like. Suspension is way too soft in the front and easily compresses, but the back is perfect. There's a big gap between the hood and the cabin which is a bit detracting from an overall solid appearance. Also finally the functions, HOG, steering, and doors are really hard to reach as they are inside the cabin, but that is a minor nitpick. Overall though its an amazing car with great functions. I highly recommend building this and give it a solid 9/10

So glancing at Amazon (U.S), Technic sets are discounted. So I was looking at a few of the mid size sets to buy. I'm debating between buying the 42039 or biuying 42038 and 42040 together as I can get them for roughly the same price. Which would provide the best parts and building experience? I like the 42039 as I'm a fan of cars, but the other 2 sets offer more parts for the same price and plus instead of having one set I'll have 2 to build. Thoughts?

Wondering if anyone else is in the same dilemma as me. I want to dislike the Porsche as it is flawed in so many ways for the price point, from the bad steering angle, the gaps in the front, the vomit colored chassis, and the odd gearbox system, but I simply can't. Something keeps drawing me back to this car,it not sure what it is. Opening the box seems like a ceremony with the book, wheels, and the coffee table book, which is a huge plus for me. Plus the car itself. Its massive, orange and just has a presence as a display model. TLG has really succeeded in buying this car seem like an experience I'm debating whether this will be a buy for me or not due to these reasons. For 300 dollars I could easily Bricklink a MOC supercar which would look great and have great functions, yet it would not have the same experience of this (flawed) set Just my 2 cents -

Future Ultimate Technic Sets
Rishab N replied to Kman860's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Guys again with all these wishes we need to consider the aspect of how iconic something is. The Porsche 911 is literally an automotive legend with over 50 years of heritage and a recognizable silhouette. I don't think something like a BMW I8 would work well here, as it is not nearly as iconic. It seems like TLG is releasing the Porsche for both Lego and non Lego fans and are trying to sell it as more of a model than a toy. Given this, if they were to design another "ultimate" supercar, the mass appeal would need to be considered again. Few cars have this appeal, so they have to choose wisely and sparingly -
Future Ultimate Technic Sets
Rishab N replied to Kman860's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looking at iconic cars, I think something like a Ford GT, Porsche 917K, Lamborghini Countach, I think a Countach makes a lot of sense as the kids who grew up with posters of the car could then own a buildable model of their dream car. Thus sales could spread from just Lego customers due to the nostagia -

Agreed. I wish there was an elegant way of fixing that. -

I'm just hoping that this wheel and tire combo doesn't become ridiculously priced on Bricklink like the silver champion wheels -

I appreciate the effort in paddle shifters, but am I the only one who would prefer(but not true to the original car) a regular six speed gearbox? -

I understand that they are really trying to push that "its just like the real car", but I wouldn't have minded HOG steering on this -

A few interesting quotes "will initially be available at shop.LEGO.com from June 1st, 2016" So no August release date online "Furthermore, the elements of the individual assembly groups are packed in separate boxes for the first time and, together with the detailed instructions, provide an insight into the assembly process of the actual vehicle." Sounds a bit like 8448 to me which is nice "Consequently, the LEGO model also features a few rough edges that give it identity and character" Nice excuse for some flaws Lego " Inside the box you’ll discover a special collector’s book chronicling the history of LEGO Technic and Porsche GT cars, together with 4 original-design rims bearing the RS emblem....Delivered in luxurious box packaging." Sounds like a special box maybe like 41999? I also like the sound of a collectors book included -

This already was a must buy for me and I think this seals the deal Looks like we might me seeing some orange supercar MOCs now They kept the awkward paddle shifters and it has a 4 speed gearbox which is a bit disappointing. Engine has some nice detail, and new black panels. Its a little underwhelming in a few areas and 300 dollars is a lot of cash, but I still like it. Also the Brickset article is a great read http://brickset.com/article/20854/technic-42056-porsche-911-gt3-rs
