When did your collection reach critical mass?
rriggs replied to Arigomi's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I'm currently holding around 65,000 pieces and my two biggest problems are time for building and sorting after disassembling which is a real chore. I tend to focus very much on Town/City and about 85% of my source sets are from these themes. My MOCs are also Town/City based so I tend to find I have the pieces I need (or very simple substitutes) for most things I plan. I am lucky that I have plenty of space so I don't have any worries in that department. If I had to put a date on it I would have said my collection reached critical mass sometime around 2008. Could be as there are several modular-looking rooftops in the poster scene... Cheers Rog

Both very nice and the popemobile is a very original but simple idea. I would lift the body up from the wheels on them both though so there's some clearance between the wheels and mudguards. Cheers Rog

That'd be what we call a drug store in the more civilised parts of the world... Cheers Rog

Where Does My Money Go To When Buying a LEGO Set?
rriggs replied to Brickstarrunner's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It makes a big difference whether you buy from a retailer or buy direct from TLG as to how much TLG make. Retailers buy from TLG at wholesale prices and then add their own markup to get to TLG RRP (or more). In retail, the wholesale price is typically 50% of RRP the difference then has to pay the retailer's rent, staff wages, etc. Buying from TLG direct means TLG get all the markup. TLG make more money per set if you buy direct but volumes are higher through retailers. Cheers Rog -
Not in any particular order: 1. Disassembling sets and MOCs 2. Sorting parts from said disassembled sets and MOCs 3. Realising how badly I treated LEGO pieces when I was young and needing those butchered/painted/broken parts now 4. Misaligned or crooked stickers 5. Standing minifigs on smooth surfaces 6. Seeing people (not kids) with LEGO who don't appreciate what they have 7. Having hands/fingers that are just too big! Cheers Rog

I'm still deciding which way to go with the next extension but yes - there will be more updates. Maybe not until the weekend now... Thanks for watching though! Cheers Rog

Loving the vigs! Don't ever remember my dad heisting from a tree but it was a long time ago! The DS and the van are great too! How about a CX? His next car was a CX estate. Lots of curves to do on one of them too... Cheers Rog

They are awesome. Really nicely done. I particularly like the two-tone versions. I also like the yellow one as this is what my dad drove when we were young! Thanks for sharing! Cheers Rog

It was never supposed to be a hospital. The medical centre is meant to simply be a base for the ambulances hence the rec room for the paramedics being a major part of the centre. The doc was added as the boss/mentor of the paramedics and the treatment room is designed for treating staff (ie Injured firefighters) or as a holding room for patients in transit that have been brought in by chopper or by ambulance and are due to be transferred to hospital. Cheers Rog

Ok, so I moved the pole and tried a few different confgurations for a stretcher lift but there's just not enough room so I think that idea is being mothballed... A staircase will be going in there instead. I am planning this weekend to put another floor on top of the medical centre but I'm not sure what to put up there. First thought was a gym/squash court but I'm sure there must be other things I could put up there. Alternatively, it could be Coast Guard offices and then find some way of incorporating a jetty onto the building? Any ideas or suggestions? Cheers Rog

Nicely done and everything is instantly recognisable. Only other observations I would have is that the White Tower looks a bit squat for it's footprint. Maybe needs to be another floor higher. From outside the Tower grounds it looks squat but it's actually quite a tall structure. Also, Tower Bridge looks a bit skinny. I think that it needs to two studs wide all the way across to better suit the proportions. Did you deliberately put the Mayor's office the wrong way round for the purposes of taking the photo or is that a minor booboo? The slope of the building should be away from the river... Love the use of the grey frogs ilo lions on Nelson's Column! St Paul's and the BT Tower are particularly brilliant but most of all I love the tiny guns outside the Imperial War Museum. Great job! Cheers Rog

Really nice. Took me a second to figure out how you did the wheels but now I see what you've done! Genius and looks great too! Cheers Rog

Thanks fella! I have to confess that the air con unit design is stolen... Thanks for the feedback! Incorporating police wouldn't be realistic for me. Fire and ambulance work well together and are common around the world. Police tend to stay separate... I think it would dilute the concept somewhat too. Cheers Rog

Works now. Very typical questions. Cheers Rog

Guess they've either cocked up the survey/link or have sent the invite out too early then... Cheers Rog

Hi Has anyone else received an email today inviting them to participate in the Q2 2013 AFOL survey? If so, does the link in the invitation email work? Mine doesn't... Don't know if it's me or the survey isn't live yet? Cheers Rog

Started to look at putting in a lift today up to the medical centre. I've got the ideal spot but I'm going to have to move the fireman's pole to fit it in especially as ideally I want it big enough to take a stretcher. This means removing and reconstructing the medical centre floor and the vehicle technicians will lose some of their work space. It always sounds much easier than it actually is don't you think? Will have to leave it until the weekend I think... Cheers Rog

I would say AC Ace rather than a Corvette... Great MOC and some amazing details. Just don't go over any big speed bumps with an exhaust that low! Really nice work! Cheers Rog

A gym would be good - Lots of nice details you could try on the gym equipment. I would particularly like to see a minifig cross trainer... Cheers Rog

Theme Hospial - now that's a blast from the past! Fond memories although I hadn't considered it when I put the skeleton in the room. Hmmm... A lift?. That's a good idea. Next mod planned methinks! Cheers Rog

The medical centre is now done so here's what it looks like inside. First, an overall shot of downstairs: There is now some space for the vehicle technicians to work in the area between the fire and ambulance bays. The door from the street also comes in here and the firemen's pole drops down from upstairs: The other side of the ambulance bays is a storage area for stretchers, some dustbins and the fire exit: Moving to upstairs, first an overall shot of the medical centre: Close up in the paramedic's rec room: Some details in the doctor's office: And a couple of views of the treatment area. This facility is used for treating fire/ambulance staff and as a holding area for patient's in transit: As always, comments and feedback very welcome and much appreciated! Cheers Rog

So, before finishing the interior of the medical centre I decided I had better sort out the parking in the rear area as it's a bit out of control. This is how it did look: And this is now - As you can see there is much more space and more parking bays. The doctor's car now parked at the far end next to the fire chief's car and the recovery truck. The patient transport ambulance and fire support truck in the main yard and the other fire support vehicles in the new extended area. There are also proper spaces now for the fire motorcycle and quad bike - marked out with proper letters for each vehicle type: Lastly is the diesel pump - with this many vehicles in the fleet they would have their own pump - supplied and maintained by Octan of course! Cheers Rog

LEGO Store in Watford has all of the new sets. Argos and ToysRUs both have only the fire/ambulance starter set. Cheers Rog
