  1. I've got a few, I'll put another up :)
  2. Thanks everyone for the kind words! That would have been a good idea! They're actually clipped on both sides, for structural support. The frame is quite bare to fit all the gears, but needs to be strong enough to handle the elastic - so every little bit of extra rigidity helps! It's from a pack of 40 for 99p. If anything, it breaking would be incentive to get a stronger faster band :)
  3. I like building 6-wide cars that seat 2 figs next to each other. But this car has a secret... Whoosh! The pullback motor is custom, to fit in my 6-wide plan. The gears let it freewheel once no more power is being put in. Two of my cheerleader squad show off the convertible mode. The nice thing about making your own motor is that it's upgradeable. I used the first elastic band I found; I'm sure with a stronger one this beast could go much faster! This one went down very well on Reddit. Incidentally I would love to see more Eurobricks-quality mocs there, if anyone wants to share their stuff there. Anyway, because of the support I made instructions available to download (you can enter "0" to get it free if you wish). More details. (Flickr). More 6-wide cars.
  4. Thank you all for the kind words, means a lot to a first time shipwright like myself. The ship hulls are actually surprisingly spacious once you take out all the cannons!
  5. [pid][/pid] 161B This is my first ship, the HMS Lily, which is an exploration ship inspired by the real HMS Challenger. It was kitted out with exploration kit to find out how deep the ocean was, and to dredge it to find out what (if anything) lived down there. In my model I've got enough beds and living area for the 6 crew, plus the lab area with all the samples they've collected. Overview of the hold, with the cooking equipment, table, and the laboratory at the end. A strange bird head in a jar, and a taxidermied dog of some variety. The stern cabin, where the captain and wife sleep. Left to right: Captain, his wife, zoologist, biologist, and two sailors. In the real HMS Challenger, there were over 200 crew and three scientists. (!) More detail pics are available on Flickr. Also a bit more history on the HMS Challenger, which I think was super cool. I should make a proper warship next!
  6. Lego911 has been a longtime ridicu-speed builder at the LUGNUTS Flickr group. Nice to see his debut here!
  7. I really like some sets, and say as such. This set is great, I love mechanical features. If I don't like a set or style of set, I ignore them. The only time I'd post vitriol would be if there's something bad done to something I had high hopes for; e.g. the original Simpsons stupid eyes. If most people do the same, then unless LEGO does a blunder most comments are positive - it's just different people posting! I don't understand why people are hating on this set, it's a really great addition to a town that isn't police or construction. What's not to like? Edit: I do wish it was £99 though, £119 is steep when I could get a whole pet shop.
  8. I was always bothered by how a project that made it to 6000+ votes and onto the front page would sit there forever, and the only way for it to leave was for it to get 10,000 votes. (Or be overtaken, theoretically.) This has meant that the front page is really stale, and I've seen all the projects there for ages. I would much rather see fast-moving 500-vote projects being promoted than the ones that have already got traction just waiting to pass the goal. For this reason, I am very supportive of the year time limit - and I hope the website is a bit easier to navigate to find trending projects. I would definitely be a more regular visitor if the site was a bit more dynamic week in and week out!
  9. I don't understand how these were on display and yet we only have one picture..? The shops set is cute. I see a niche for someone selling instructions on how to convert two into a single modular building. I loved the Medieval Market Village, but then I got it for £55 second-hand, and that was 1500 pieces.
  10. Thanks all :)
  11. Here is my first topic on Eurobricks and my first mech: the Orion Mechanica. I normally build cars so I didn't have high expectations for this. Luckily it surpassed them. I liked the idea of a completely sealed cockpit as in the Evangelion series, so I went ahead and designed my own. Seats one minifig driver, who sees the world through screens rather than through any windscreen. The cockpit pod is removeable (see video), and both the hatch and the neck are sprung with elastic bands to make it a bit more tactile. Somewhat poseable legs, though it only has 2 positions it can stand in. I have developed a building standard called "Alice-proof". This means that if placed in front of my flatmate Alice, it takes her longer than 90 seconds to break it. This is the first model in a long time that passed that test. And so concludes commentary on the Orion Mechanica. Hope you liked it! Full Flickr set My Flickr stream
  12. The interior of this build just sings, it's one of the best I've seen.
  13. These look like great fun, I'd love to make a car if I had the rest of the setup.
  14. I just want to thank the mods for the size limit in this challenge - it's made it so much more competitive and allowed all the small builders to get involved. Really appreciate it.

  16. I was surprised reading this because you reached further than usual: you commented on the trends in Lego design. I think it's really interesting to see Lego going for a muted colour palette with a touch of extra realism, and I appreciate that you touched on this trend in the review. I think I like it, though I am still not sold on the bonnet piece that can only be used in that exact scenario. Other thoughts: totally missed opportunity to introduce another civilian female torso. I would have liked to have seen a cute window (with glass) offset at the rear, to break up that godawful chunky backside. Anyway, I typically only get 1 or 2 vehicles a year, and I don't think the camper makes the cut. It's not too bad though, maybe it'd be #3 or #4 ;)
  17. Excellent contest. There was no way those insects wouldn't win, they're just too cool. May I suggest not detailing every single result though? If I entered, I'd rather not have to see myself at the bottom and just assume I did ok. Maybe just the top 10 need detailing? But perhaps I'm alone in this, it just seems a tad demotivating to rank all the way to the bottom.
  18. Very thoughtful design, it feels very real and useable. The accountants' is a smart use of the upper storeys, and I really like how much of the outside is a different colour to the inside of the building - using 2 stud thick walls allows this, and it's a charm to see it used so well.
  19. I was most shocked when I saw the Minecraft set listed at $35/€35/£35. So I didn't buy the set. That behaviour from TLG has to stop.
  20. Great set! I'll be going for Orthanc, but this should definitely please those who get it. If only the price/piece were a bit better for the size!
  21. The eagle is fine, look at the final shot where we see all the parts from above. It's got a big wingspan, significantly wider than the brick-built ent. Any bigger and it would look silly with the tower. I think the eagle is a cleverly thought out compromise - if you want something to minifig scale, go build your own, but this one is the only way we'll get one in scale with the tower. Alternatively, let's all complain about minor faults on an incredible overall set.
  22. This will be the biggest set I've ever got. I'll have to sell it later on, but I must build it. So I will. If I shuffle up the bags, it could take a week!
  23. This is a fun idea! A lot of people here are rather jaded. Don't be! It's just a game, maybe you'll get lucky. And yes, it's a way to make money - that's how promotional things work. Why else would Willy Wonka give out golden tickets? To make money!
  24. Too many skydivers and mechanics per box! It's sometimes fun to get CMFs at random from the store, because I don't collect them all, but it's no fun if all the interesting ones are rare and all the rubbish ones are common!
