  1. Here it is: http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=87935 I simply did a search on Google and typed: Sets better destined as spare parts site:eurobricks.com
  2. I think it was the thread I started and titled "Sets better destined as Spare Parts" ...
  3. Kind of makes sense ... since those PF parts require more intensive manual labor, and hence the low cost workforce in China.
  4. I tend to agree here. My son did quite a few of the technic sets (where he must follow printed instructions) but now, he is not interested in new sets anymore and the 'pre-cooked' examples ... What he likes instead is taking all sorts of parts and build his 'own' contraption. I guess those are stages in life... where one grows out of the 'predictive' outcome and wants to explore on their own ... e.g., where a suitable Universal Set is the answer.
  5. I knew I've seen it before ... I just checked, and here it is. On the US version of the Unimog 8110 box, Look at the top side of the box, and you can read the following: Components made in DENMARK, CHINA, HUNGARY, MEXICO, AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC ...
  6. You are right. But let him get to that conclusion based on what he'll mesh to the idlers. If you have compound gearing, then the overall transmission ratio (TR) is TR= (Z1/Z2) × Z3/Z4) In the specific case where an idler is used, Z2=Z3 and the idler essentially drops out of the equation, and its number of teeth do not matter. Let us see first what the rest of the construction looks like, and we can debate then.
  7. Right, I only suggested to 'cut' the differential to have a more 'compact' construction.
  8. Can't you just cut the differential? You'll get 2 idlers then. In the first picture, the ratio (between input shaft and differential) is 8/24=1/3 In the secnd pitcture, the ratio is 10/20=1/2 Both above are calculated between the driv-shaft (from motor) and idler gear (differential in 1st pic) If however you want the ratios between the input shaft, and what appears to be the output (2nd) shaft, then those numbers are: 1/1 and 10/20=1/2 Does this answer your questions or there is more?
  9. From what I read, most lego parts are made in China, Mexico, and the Czech Republic. Then, all parts are shipped to Denmark and put together into sets. Of all three, I am sure those parts made in China would have the hardest of times keeping 'consistent' as those rely on local suppliers as well. Such is the price we have to pay for globalization and cost reductions.
  10. Very ingenious and inspiring work as always, especially the 'new' penta-swashplate. It's a pity TLG is not considering new parts anymore for cuusoo (and canceled all your submissions ) In any event, and just from kinematics, the swashplate should have 3 degrees of freedom: 1 up-down translation for collective (to adjust pitch angle / lift) and 2 rotations (pitch/roll) for cyclic. I liked how you captured such 3 DOF with 3 LAs but, from my thinking, it'll be very difficult to 'combine' somehow the 3 motions to yield the three independent controls. This is not meant as a criticism, but rather something to think about for all of us following. I know it is easier said than done, but it might be 'efficient' to have each of the 3 LAs control each of the 3 DOFs (Vertical/pitch/roll) independently (no coupling). That would require some ingenious mechanisms ... though from all you've done so far ... you're up to the challenge
  11. Audio-Recording Toaster ? ... Let's see if I can top that off! I went to a furniture store few days back and the kids were having fun with the recliner beds (where front and rear lift for apparently a more comfortable sleep experience). The salesman was explaining (to my son) that he can adjust the bed's tilt with an iPhone .... oh but wait!!! At the upper end ($6000+), those beds come with built-in speakers and you can route your music collection via BlueTooth and he demonstrated that to us. I walked away after telling the salesman I'm waiting for the DeLuxe version (due next year) ... with Bose speakers and a Skype/Webcam-enabled recliner bed ... Back on topic now ...
  12. Well, it is true that 'most' tracked vehicle are driven from the rear, with the sprocket at the rear and idler/track-tensioner at the front. However, there are machines with a single/central sprocket in the middle (top) and two idlers (front/rear) as in some of the Dozers made by CATerpillar.
  13. Yes ... lol ... Mecanum ... darn, honestly I think it's a spell checker.
  14. Your Huey was (still is) an epic build. Though, from the limited photos, it is very difficult to reproduce. Would be nice to put some instructions or even an LXF. Granted, some of the old parts are not available in LDD.
  15. What I really would love is .... for the stores PAB Walls (Pick-A-Brick) ... to carry some TECHNIC parts.
  16. Absolutely/Positively/Definitely NOT!!! I consider the 8043 to be an iconic set ... and I still have one sealed.
  17. Interesting ... I play MORE with lego now that I have a wife+kids ... I guess it's a way to 'convince' my kids that STEM is important ... Thank you, it does help. Too bad the modern technic panels are not available in gray, or else they would make a 'smoother' skin.
  18. This must be truly yours ... though I think it is 'new' is because such parts are rather not common and not many of us have 'experimented' with them ... I got 100+ that I'm collecting for some meccano mecanum wheels ...
  19. So, any more 'news' about this project? ... or the criticism was too intense? I'm still very curious to see more about the internals ... how the chain links attach to the drive shaft, and how the later to the wheels ... I bet there is no differential though Personal Note: I would LOVE for those cylinders to be 'recycled' and go into Grab Bags ....
  20. Great Job and Nicely done review! Comparing the two gives one an appreciation of how far the studless have come. Definitely the 8455 is my preferred ... though I'm a bit biased as I had operated a real backhoe and just love the many controls the 8455 has.
  21. What was this about? ... spam on EB?
  22. They look like K'nex wheels to me .... many eBay sellers tend to mix lego and everything else.
  23. True, though that option was already available on the original lego set. I keep mine with two opposing blades folded as the display shelf is not deep enough....
  24. Precisely, that is why I said ... 'but that can be easily remedied' ... I'd prefer 3L with stops and 2× 1/2 bushings , though it all depends on the parts assortment one has on hand. On a different note, I tried to 'reproduce' the LDD file, and it's not trivial as the OP has a lot of experience with LDD (more than I'll ever attain). Also, post #16 shows a 2L axle with stop .. is this a new part or another trick by the LDD Masters?
  25. I just realized an 'impossible' build on post #5 ... the 1.5 pins holding the blades cannot be mounted inside part 53533. Still, that can be remedied easily with other parts.
