42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245
DrJB replied to AndroTech's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Correct, but you guys missed the main message in my comment. I typed that last night and was being a bit lazy (CV is very short to type). I should have gone for the full name so there is no ambiguity: Those are called Cardan Joints. That said, my point is still valid. Got any comments for that? French Canadian Saying: Le doigt montre la lune. Le simple d'esprit regarde le doigt Which Translates to: The finger points to the moon. The 'simple-minded' looks at the finger Of course, all in good fun and no disrespect meant. -

Interesting how the CV joints are NOT mounted correctly. I've always known that, to avoid torsional oscillations, the CV joints must be indexed so that whatever oscillations are put out by the first one must be canceled by the second, and that is NOT the case here. Edit: I somehow mis-read this picture. The Cardan installation IS correct, That'll teach me not to read the forum late at night. Cheers! -

we should, but we don't ... thanks to the plethora of Red MOCs and Sergio Marchione. -

If you're tearing down your 8448, I'll gladly buy a couple of pieces off of you ... lol The kids have been playing with mine and lost one of the long grey ribbed hoses, that serve as styling for the two doors. -
Let's just cool it off here. This topic is not about 'lecturing' people. We're all grown-ups (I hope) and expect some civility, and what the heck is Team America? No one is confused, and I advise you read the prior discussions that lead to this specific one before jumping in and calling people names! This just shows some immaturity from your side. The topic being discussed IS suspicious AND misleading. You only need to see the variability in all the specs of the Lego parts (as I stated in post #32) to 'appreciate' the source of confusion. We've all had university courses in electrical engineering and are trying to approach this from that level. If we have something positive to bring to the table, so be it. Else, be quiet and move on. Going back to our topic, I'll take the example from my prior post: The input power is 4.5 Watts, whereas the output power is Voltage×Current = 12×0.2 = 2.4 Watts This suggests an efficiency of 2.4/4.5 = 53% ... This is very low (from my experience). I'm not the expert on transformer design but, can anyone explain what type of losses make this transformer so inefficient ... or is it the 'Made in China' label suggesting poor quality and workmanship?

In the other thread about the Mercedes Truck, there was quite a few exchanges/speculations about the new turntable in that truck. One wonders if this crane is also fitted with the same LARGE turntable. My calculations, based on a picture in the other thread, suggest that the turntable has anywhere from 64 to 72 teeth, whereas others are guessing only 60 (In contrast, the current large turntable has 56 teeth). Anyone spotted 'details' about the turntable in the crane's videos?

With all the 'nice' parts, this set also qualifies as a viable 'parts pack'. -

Congratulations, that's such a beautiful masterpiece. I'm sure your post/photos will entice many (including myself) to get on with this project and finish it. One question if I may: The thread you're using for the crane appears to be 'thicker' than the one typically found in Lego sets. Care to share the specs of such thread and where you got it from? Thanks

A bit Off-Topic but: Anyone knows of a Toy Fair in the US where Lego is typically displayed? Granted, the variety/selection of toys in Germany/EU is unique, and such market justifies dedicated Fairs. We have the Chicago Auto Show here next week, but I'm after 'smaller' toys. -
Agreed, and I did not imply that the CG was fixed. I was simply asking if the functionality existed in any given software package. If it does, then we need to calculate the position for four extreme configurations, fully retracted vs. fully expanded, and down vs. fully up. Then we need to calculate the force needed for all 4 configurations. Then with those 4 forces, calculate the necessary pressure to be developed in the cylinders/pump. I never implied it was a simple calculation and some extreme configurations have to be analyzed. However, the first requirement is that one must be able to calculate the mass and CG position for a few configurations (4). Note that I'm thinking a simple static calculation will suffice. One will need to add friction effects as a margin. The dynamic effects will most likely be minimum. That said, do we know of a package that calculates the total mass + CG location of a given assembly?

[TC6] Mercedes Econic Garbage Truck
DrJB replied to Eraman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The garbage container is typically made of sheet metal and is smooth on the inside. This is done to enable the garbage to be compacted. Those ribs you see on the outside are stiffening beams for the sheet-metal construction. The author simply wanted to replicate the looks/functionality. -
I'm sure one can do some simple calculations, but for this, one needs the weight and CG location of the new boom, along with the max pressure in the cylinders (can be measured with a Lego manometer). Hence my next question: Is there an option, in any of the available CAD tools to calculate the mass and CG of a given assembly e.g., the new boom? That would sure be very useful information. The rest of the calculations can be done simplistically by hand. Another thought: Even if the new cylinders won't make it, I'm sure the new turntable would be a welcome upgrade here.

I've always wanted a bucket-wheel excavator. Not sure many people know or have seen those in real life, but those of us who have, it's an epic feat of engineering. I even collected several bionicle parts exactly for this project. Picture below is TrBlue but they do come in white, and a while back I bought most of the US supply. Still haven't had the time to put it together. The other idea I'm working on is a GBC based on such bucket-wheel-excavator. Despite all the nice ideas in this thread, I'm hoping TLG will surprize us with something never seen before, maybe three separate modular sets that couold operate very well on their own, but all together be a super-machine, kinda like the three spaceshipd in Goldorak (for those who remember).

Very nicely done, and thank you for sharing. I hope these are permanently displayed somewhere in your house. Few Comments: 1. The trees and extra lamp poles, those were not part of the modulars, correct? 2. I wonder how the whole setup will look like in late afternoon (or evening setting) with some life-lites placed in the street lamps and other few key locations. 3. Coming to think of it (and after reading the previous post on trees), the buildings look 'old' as in it took several generations to build such city center. However, the trees being 'small/short' makes them look much younger than the rest of the layout. Maybe older/taller trees (that span several floors) could be worth a try. In the end, it's really about what 'focus' you want to have: the trees or the buildings. You have done such a fantastic job with the modulars that I would hate (personally) to put a big tree in the middle and eclipse such buildings ... no easy choices. Cheers

Your Best Technic Bargains
DrJB replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
True, but the pictures on eBay (of the actual set) were not very 'appealing'. Dirty set, missing parts, blurry pictures. I bet the only people who were bidding on that auction knew EXACTLY what it was and how rare the set is. In my experience, not all bidders and sellers always know what they're dealing with. -
Adding to the above post, and that's really getting confusing, is that a search on BrickLink of item 70931 brings up the picture below, which says the output is 12 VDC. Note however that the inscriptions on the back of the transformer do not mention LEGO at all (in contrast with my prior post/picture). Here is another picture from peeron.com, where the printed output is 10 VAC (not 12) and yet another picture off the net, with 10 VAC and and 7 Volt-Amps of 'apparent' power (not Watts)

Misuses of Technic Parts In Mocs
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Again, I agree about the time stamp, but I edited my post to change the picture size. The word 'apparently' was always there. I do KNOW what I wrote, and what my intentions were. If we're going forensic and being judgemental, there is no point being here. Yes, I reckon that my style was a bit 'provocative' but okay, it triggered a 'healthy' discussion. I hope we all agree and can get back to the initial intention of this thread: What are 'apparent' misuses have you come across, involving Technic Parts, of course? Fair enough, I'll support that for the sake of keeping this forum 'civil'. Gotta be 'mindful' of the spectrum of 'sensitivities' on here. *Peace* -
Misuses of Technic Parts In Mocs
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
No biggie, and no need for apologies. I edited the original post to change the picture size, but the the word 'apparently' was always there. Maybe it's my style that was a bit 'offending' but it was not my intention. As I've said in some of my posts/replies in other threads, this is only a hobby, and no one should take the comments here skin-deep (me included). It's a forum for discussion, and opinions are never right or wrong. *Peace*
