First post, first question (painting LEGO)
MAB replied to Double_D's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Spray paint works fine on technic panels and so on, and I've never had a problem with new and clean parts. It doesn't dry so well if the parts are dirty or greasy. But I'd question why you'd do it to expensive parts. I'd go down the route of knock-off if you are just going to destroy the genuine parts anyway. Maybe build the set using genuine lego and use knock-offs for the panels. -
[LDD MOC] Parliament of Hungary - Architecture
MAB replied to Lamborghini Waffle Sauce's topic in Special LEGO Themes
The white vs tan is often a problem for stonework like that. I'd also go for 1x3 tiles instead, or maybe three 1x2s. I don't think you'll ever get the perfect match for detail at this scale but I think you've done an excellent job so far. -
THE GREATEST COLLECTABLE MINIFIGURE ROUND 13 (VOTING CLOSED)
MAB replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I sure did. I loved the crash test dummy back in the day (I have a small army of about 6 of them still) but for his time the vampire was a cool Halloween figure and as a secondary positive, also very useful for parts - that hairpiece in black (new for this series, also in Karate man), excellent formal suit torso and a wonderful cape. His influence may well be diluted by the MF Lord Vampyre and the whole of S14, but I'm voting on the quality / effect of the minifigure at the time of release. We expect printed legs with most figures and highly detailed torsos these days whereas this was not possible back in the early series, so I take that into account when voting.- 58 replies

Look hard enough and you'll find some hanging chads in any poll. Surely if people are told to vote for their favourite, they should vote and their vote only count if they vote properly.- 58 replies

Should Lego use Dry Transfer or Water Slide Decals?
MAB replied to xboxtravis7992's topic in General LEGO Discussion
You can apply regular stickers a bit like water slide decals. If you spray the surface with a very fine soapy water mist, then put the sticker on you can slide it for a while to align it perfectly. However, they do take a while to dry and can easily get dislodged when building if you don't let them dry first. -
^ I think prize D has probably been one of the best prizes, not just in this year, but ever.

Your best prices from a major retailer?
MAB replied to BubbaFit45531's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
Yep, a good old tesco direct cock up. Another good one I got was the Wolverine Chopper with Deadpool set. I got a price match at John Lewis and paid £7 each for them. It was when I was starting out reselling and I only bought ten as I wasn't sure they'd sell so well. What a fool! I also got 180 collectable minifigures series 6 for 50p each from JL. I had hoped to get 3 sealed boxes, but they sent remnants of opened boxes.- 16 replies

THE GREATEST COLLECTABLE MINIFIGURE ROUND 10 (VOTING CLOSED)
MAB replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
At the time he was cheap, I was after a lot of red hands. I ended up with a series of 10 robots, each of which had a different coloured pair of hands. They looked really good as a set.- 23 replies

If you want to. They are both good trains. You have to make the final decision.

Lego Licensed Parts available from Bricks & Pieces
MAB replied to LegoPercyJ's topic in LEGO Licensed
The naming doesn't mean anything about what happens later on. The Luke hair has been in multiple non-licensed sets. Similarly, Harry Potter's wig (also named) appeared in non-HP sets. The Luke wig was available in sets long before Bricks and Pieces was online. -

It was only £6 at John Lewis when I loaded up on them. My best prices ever were tesco though - 8x #9395 technic pick-up trucks at £8 each, along with £10 off for a new account, so about £6.75 each. I missed out on the £3.97 Portal of Atlantis though. I also bought 80x Whirling Vines (Gorzan), £1 each. I also loaded up on SW Battle of Hoth and Minotaurus games when they were a fiver each. Then, of course, all the ASDA Hobbit stuff, the entire second and third series were 50% off. £50 for The Lonely Mountain! Smaug alone sells for more than that these days.- 16 replies

Santa was a really good CMF at the time, and very sought after for a couple of years. But since then, many similar Santas have appeared. The same is probably true of the elf, slightly less popular than he would have been if LOTR and The Hobbit hadn't happened. Plus for his time, the Elf had really quite detailed printing, whereas minifigs in later series are now expected to have good printing as a basic standard.

What would be considered a "large" LEGO collection?

If you want a minifigure sized version of Axl and don't want to use decals, you could take a normal (NK) torso and apply a neck bracket on it but back to front. Then put the 1x1 decorated tile from the Axl-bot on it so he has the bull decoration.

Did The Lone Ranger sets (not the movie) bomb? I think they sold reasonably well, especially the train, and I parted loads out on BL. Sure, they were available at 50% in some places, but that is true of many series. In the UK, The Hobbit third wave sets were 50% within 3 weeks of release. The Lonely Mountain was regularly £50, Battle of Five Armies £25 (58% off). I rarely part with any money for a general release set unless it is at least 33% off. Does that mean all series bomb? Or everything is just overpriced and people know they can wait for discounts.

Or Ninjago. Just that it is Eastern rather than Western.

I know they currently don't. But when have they said they will NEVER do it? I don't believe they have ever made such a statement. If / when lego takes another downturn like around the turn of the century, and if WW2 history is popular (say in about 2039-45) then they may well decide the time is right to do militaria.
-
They currently don't do WW1 or WW2. Have they ever stated that they will never do these? Their boundaries change with time. When the younger generations own the company they may well decide in 50 years time that WW1 and WW2 is long ago enough to be history, when no-one that was alive at the time is currently living.
