[Stud.io] Micropolis Weekend designs before Brickfair VA 2017
MAB replied to Sarles's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'd be tempted to put a reddish brown 1x1 rount plate under the icecream parts to make them look a bit more like trees. Otherwise, very nice as the complex in the last pic.- 10 replies

Have you had this on display? Some of your LBG bricks seem to vary hugely in colour. Or is it just the light it is photographed in.

I have a few buy-now trigger points: 20% off if it is an exclusive (the 20% may be through promos, extra sets I can sell on rather than direct discount). 33% off to buy one or two for me, for regular retail sets. And 50% for buy multiples for me as parts packs, or for resale. Although even then it depends on what is in the set. I thought the movies were not badly received here. I think the major retailers here didn't have good sales for Hobbit wave 2 sets, so wave 3 sets went on almost instant discount as soon as they came out. The crazy thing was that some of them only lasted a few days, showing there was massive demand for them at 50% off - there would probably have been high (but not as high) demand at 20% off. The Lonely Mountain for £50 was a no-brainer - selling Smaug and the minifigs it was easy to recoup that (and more) plus keep all the parts for free.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 18 Rumors and Discussion
MAB replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I think the opposite often happens. So you'll get one character from small countries (so, for example, a Dutch person in clogs - population 17m) but then also only one from UK (pop 65m), one from Germany (pop 81m), one from France (pop 67m), and probably one from the USA (pop 320m). And if they go for something very stereotypical from just one region within the country so, for example, a Lederhosen guy to represent the whole of Germany then it can be quite annoying if you don't like the Bavarian image of Germany. Of course, really small countries like Slovenia or Luxembourg would get forgotten completely, but then these are often smaller (in population) than many capital cities. -

Sales are not always a good indicator of demand. ASDA reduced all of the Hobbit wave 3 sets about two weeks after they were released. Obviously, that was not LEGO doing it, but that was a great time to be a castle builder. £50 for the Lonely Mountain, and Smaug was an easy sell for £40 back then. One of my ASDA deliveries set me back about £1200! The delivery man was impressed by the number of boxes he had to unload. Before that they also did the larger Dol Guldur battle set for £25, I bought 12 of them that time.

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
MAB replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
The formula might be the same, but the sales of a 500 part $50 set are likely to be significantly higher than a 5000 part $500 set. So lego would probably want to make a range of sets at different price points rather than one super set. Plus, it would probably give us more flexible parts packs if they were smaller sets, as you could buy loads of one cheap set if they contained the parts you wanted, rather than having to spend $500 on a single super set that contains loads of parts you might not want.- 991 replies

The Greatest Collectible Minifigure THANKS AND GOODBYE
MAB replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I don't think it had anything to do with the babysitter herself. That one was all about the accessory - the baby. The gladiator vs the fly was tough. I went fly, even though I love the gladiator. I army built (well, got a small army of eight) of the gladiators since they are useful for mixing and matching with other figures (barbarian, various bare-chested figure such as Ocean King, now the S17 gladiator, etc) to get groups of individual gladiators. But then I also army-built with the fly. For that one, some have two regular hands, some two claws, some just left, some just right, to give them a bit of genetic mutation between individuals within the species.- 2,045 replies

I think they probably do consider army building to some extent. In the Character Encyclopedia they mention the Spartan is a fan favourite and that at least one fan has collected 300. There have also been designer videos where they talk about trying to identify the popular ones (although not necessarily army builders) and make those ones more frequent.

Yes, I have seen / owned every other CMF up to now (except Mr Gold) and have been able to handle the figures and parts, and also been able to use them. I think that gives a much better appreciation of each one rather than just seeing pictures. Before now, I've thought that I really like a figure based on the pictures, but not liked them once I have them in hand, and also vice versa. Disney and The Batman Movie are in the poll aren't they? It seems very few have been in so far whereas I'm sure I 've seen nearly all of S1 and TeamGB go past already.- 2,045 replies

What about the original CMF army builder - the Spartan. The battle goddess is also good for army building, especially for civilian Greek women. What we really need is a decent civilian toga wearer (for both ages). Elves was started in S3 with an army builder. Dwarves S5 with an army builder. They have both been continued in this series. I'm not sure I'd change the elf much, she is fine as an army builder as she is - the worst part is probably the hairstyle and a simpler hairstyle would have been better. Simple head changes make for variety for this one. The dwarf, I think I would make quite a few changes as he looks too unique to fit with the S5 dwarf.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 17 Rumors and Discussion

Slightly off-centred printing seems to be the norm these days.- 1,421 replies

Why not? Replace the heads on the each of them for a little variety and they are all army builders. The elf only really needs a change in the head and she is perfect for army building. Mix and match the gladiator with parts from the original one and the barbarian and you have a whole range of slightly different gladiators. The dwarf's body is fine for an army builder (although I don't like it as much as the original).

20 is tough - 5 good characters for me: Monster Scientist - good one, but already we have the S4 crazy scientist (and the whole MF theme). Classic King, great figure and parts. Unicorn girl, another great figure, nice subtle printing and very popular with little girls. Fencer, a little different to most sports figures, a nice figure if not up against better ones. Caveman, great new hairpiece and decent print for back at S1. Velma - no interest whatsoever for me. The final two for me are the King and the Caveman, with the Caveman edging it.- 2,045 replies

I think it was a combined LOTR / Hobbit license, so there was some advertising via the Hobbit films. -

Isn't that pretty much what we already had in S15, a queen in a red dress. Give her a trans-red jewel and that is essentially a Ruby Queen. -
