Pneumatics General Discussion
Aris replied to 9v system's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yep there is one. Add counterweight! -
Hi all, In 2016 I did some interesting experiments with large pneumatic cylinders and LA, considering 2 very important factors : distance and torque. However, not in a straight distance, but multiple directions. As for pneumatics, air flow depends on the pump used (large or mini) and the use of air tank as well. All pneumatic functions had 1-2 large cylinders and their air switch. Pneumatic cases : a) 1 manually operated or motorized switch, 1 meter away from air compressor. b) a system with 10 manually operated or motorized switches, 1 meter away from the same air compressor. c) 10 manually operated or motorized switches, 1 meter away from 10 different air compressors (1 for each air switch). LA case : a) 1 motorized LA, 1 meter away from the pf motor, including a structure with diagonal paths and gearing. So if you are interested in this survey, you may mention your personal experiences if there are any. The question that arises here, is which case is delivering the highest torque and which the lowest. I would very much like to see your opinions.

Of course you don't have a precise control with pneumatics. But in case you create a specific structure near the cylinders (for example with rubbers) you can fix their precision a lot. It's about creativity. For me, the air precision is not solved by air switch, even if it's manually operated or motorized .

Yes of course. I am sure that huge lego technic sets will be motorized, so definitely should be more complicated sometimes and have pneumatics. At least there should be an electric compressor in some sets. I suppose that we may see a set with motorized valve in the future, if I compare current set prices with old ones. PF unfortunately belong to the past now. -

Great extension! Seems stable enough, didn't try it yet. I am sure that is not the problem of the cylinder . As far as I remember, in 90's, the pneumatic hoses where much soft and thin than e.g. in 2015 and couldn't withstand the high pressure of more than 2-3 bars. Could be easily mounted to the cylinders contrary to the new hoses which demand more power to be fully mounted so as not to pop out. -

Has the same problem with 4-5 large cylinders with square bottom. I guess that it's due to the face that they have been used quite a lot in the past. -

Great idea. What about raising the arm with the rubbers? Was the movement smooth? Indeed. I guess that V2 refers to the their almost double length mostly, rathen than cylinder's bottom. -

Totally agree with that. Great idea. But what if you want to return fast to the up direction, by using a slow air switch-actuator limit mechanism. I guess that this one works for the down direction like you correctly said. Expect for using mindstorm servo motors with suitable gearing, you may control up direction too. -

Hi all! Any news about a Lego rechargeable control+ battery box ? I guess we need that. -

Nice work. I am fan of pneumatic grippers and industrial style robotic arms. Interesting use of sensors.

[MOC] Pneumatic Grab Machine
Aris replied to paave's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Nice and different. As I can see the treads are RC and the rest is manually operated. -
Nice topic. I like this kind of mechanism very much. But Lego still needs to create a better valve for more air precision.

Sorry guys. If u mean model ''Nemesis'', there is no RC part. Everything is cotrolled by hand. Thanks!
