[MOC] Hybrid Garbage Truck
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
OK, it seems like if a MOC has fewer than 1000 parts, it takes me a month. But if a MOC has more than 1000 parts, it takes me a year. I guess, it's OK, I'm still having fun with this. I have finalized the chassis and cab. The roof of the cab changed just a little bit, so it's now a little more stable, and has a better shape. Now the HOG is in a convenient position. I gave a little green and orange highlight to match the rear hopper. Both doors open, and the cab tilts. The chassis is now ready for me to make a Studio file. The attachment points are set for the box and the cab, and the fenders have been mounted. The hybrid system works well where the differential is always deciding if it's better to use the fake engine, or the fake electric motor. I also added a lockout on the left of the chassis, to select electric only. This locks out the fake engine, and forces all movement from the second axle to the fake electric motor. Moving quicker now....- 25 replies

Thirdwigg's MOCs
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I finished another alternative build. I feel like it's just OK. But hopefully some of you will enjoy it. 42139 Hummer Rebrickable Features: Steering 2 cylinder engine with two speed transmission Front pendular suspension Rear pendular suspension Front winch Removable overland package (Roll bar, fuel take, spare tires) Opening doors I hope you all enjoy. With the Overland Package off. Shown with remaining 42139 spare parts. Video is here. -
Fantastic build! I love when a new part is used perfectly, and the Tank really looks great with those Shuttle panels. Great application, and the side and rear plates close up the gaps really nicely. Also, I love the two tone mirrors and the simple shaping. Such a simple little part of the build with common parts, but I love the detail.

[WIP] Building an 8880 Replica
Thirdwigg replied to pow's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@pow the drivetrain is from the ATS. It's a six speed transmission with a center gearlever pivot. It uses part 6641 for the changeover, but it does not slide on an axle like in set 8466 or 8448, it pivots fore and aft, and side to side on a mount much like a LEGO joystick. -
[MOC] Hoonipigasus
Thirdwigg replied to Anto's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great job with this MOC @Anto. I love the 1:10 scale for Technic cars, and the Discovery Wheels are one of my favorite parts released in the last couple of years. The features you included are great, and the packaging is top notch. I really like the drivetrain routing and packaging as it looks like each function was well though out, or took a lot of trial and error. My times making pushrod suspension usually leaves me disappointed with how well it works and how much it flexes the rest of the car. It seems like this is not an issue in this MOC. While I generally struggle with non-LEGO parts, the pink version looks terrific. Also, I love the wheel cart and jack. Perfect. -
[WIP] Building an 8880 Replica

What about using this kind of setup for the transmission? Six speed, with a center pivot for the gear selector. It uses a half stud drop for the center gears so the selector can catch all three changeovers. -
I've said in other spaces that I think this may be your best Alt build. You use the parts very well, and the functions that are expected are all there and work well. I particularly like how you used all the panels well, and fixed them rotationally so they don't move. Very well done. Also, this looks perfect in yellow and black.

[TC24] INGACNY
Thirdwigg replied to Seasider's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Alright, @Seasider is in, so I guess I need to come up with something now too. I like the start. I keep looking at all the trans-windscreens that are available as the basis for my build, and there are not many. Each one presents the challenge of the even stud width in the odd stud technic world. Are you going to keep the six wide body? -

This set seems to be perfect for alternative builds, and this is a great example. Well done, it's fantastic.- 4 replies

Thanks, Yeah, the fenders were a little epiphany I had about a week ago. I'm glad you like it. Yeah, LEGO tires always cause some sort of problem. The macaroni pieces are a little bigger than I wanted, but the effect is good enough. Glad you like them. Glad you like it. It is a cute little MOC. Yeah, I think this is about as small as I can go. At some point, like with the mower, you only have one function left. And steering is a must for me. Don't worry, it's gonna slow down here for a little bit. The next few months have a lot going on in my household. Can you believe, one of the drafts actually had the seat suspension taken out! Then I thought "this can not stand!" so I had to find a way to make it work. I'm glad I did.

That's my idea of a real vacation. -
We found an old rusty tractor sitting in the weeds of the Thirdwigg Farm. We cleaned it up, and decided to share some free instructions to make your own. You may find these at Rebrickable.com. Features Steering Fake I2 engine Three point hitch Seat suspension Full Thirdwigg Farm integration Working PTO and three point hitch. With a small ripper. And a video to see the suspension seat! Enjoy, and more stuff is coming soon!

42154 - 2022 Ford GT
Thirdwigg replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, it has to be a new part, and I'm looking forward to what it is. I love any part that can reduce the space between wheels one drive axles. I remember going from the 4L to 3L differential and the introduction of the CV joints, and both were great for driven axles. -

[MOC] Hybrid Garbage Truck
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Alright, I spent a lot of time building over the holidays, as I take a little time off from work. I spent some time thinking through and drafting some builds that will come out in 2023, but most of my time was spent coming back to this project which as sat fallow for a little while. I'm happy I did. Everything has been rebuilt. As I was testing some parts, it was clear stiffness of the body needed improvement. So I rebuilt the interior of the box with large panels and a revised sliding extraction plate. The front tan 20 tooth gears move this function. Everything is now braced, and supported by the base of the box. The internal panels giving some much needed stiffness. The structure now supports the opening rear compactor. Both linear actuators are controlled by a single tan 20 tooth gear on the top (rear one). Both are strong enough to lift the rear. I need to do some more work on the rear (colors, bracing, bin lift), so hopefully the changes will not get too much more heavy. The rear compactor keeps getting more smooth which is a good thing. You can see the test of black pins on this little video at Flickr. Next I need to close the back, redo the colors, and make sure the structure is sound. But I like where it is at right now. Also, now I know the function will work, which for a while, I was not sure about. I have started working on the studio file, but before I got too far along, I needed to finalize a couple critical parts such as the wheelbase, the length of the box, and the steering. So I spent most of my time building, rebuilding, and finalizing the chassis. It's now done (probably). Front and rear axles are steered with the HOG on the cabin. The rate of turn is different for both axles. The frame is fully braced, and strong enough for the weight of the box. The drive is on axle two with dualies. I wanted to do something different for the driveline, so I designed a simple little hybrid engine. The axle two differential drives the center differential (red), which distributes torque to either the fake I-3 engine (green), or the fake electric motor (trans light blue, right side). I added a resistance connector to the front of the crankshaft on the I-3, so on initial movement, the electric motor moves. Then, when the trucks gets moving a little quicker, the I-3 will spin. Basically, the red differential splits torque to what ever engine/motor has the least resistance. Sometimes its the I-3, sometimes the motor, some times both. I thought it would be a little more fun than a simple two or four speed transmission. Next, I need to finalize the cabin...- 25 replies
