[MOC] Mercedes 917 AK
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Can't stop, won't stop! Yeah, maybe it's time for me to work on something different., but you should know, I have another three trucks in various stages of completion, so..... Glad you like it. -
Great job @Jundis you definitely got the old machine look down for this MOC. I love the little engine, and the rear details look perfect.

I'm a little into the 1:21 scale trucks these days, so after the Knuckleboom Truck and the U423, I wanted to do something a little more simple. Free instructions are at Rebrickable.com. The truck is very similar to the Knuckleboom Truck, so it has the following features: Steering with HOG Rear wheel drive I3 fake engine Two speed transmission Rear pendular suspension Three way tipper bed with opening sides and HOG on cab Tipping cab Opening doors Tool box Working together with the TC22 End Loader. Everything open Side tipping And a little video if it's helpful. I hope you all enjoy. Another truck is coming soon....

Well done again. To me, the most beautiful part of the F40 is what is behind the driver's seat, and you managed the recreate the engine and rear hood perfectly.

[MOC] Hybrid Garbage Truck
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It's this part. I ordered one from the 51515 set, but there is a yellow one from Spike too. Yeah, I got so tired making little special frames just to prototype a mechanism. It's perfect for this. The lever on the left of the truck is to select between hybrid drive or electric only drive. The transmission when unlocked will select between the diesel engine and the electric motor based on what has the least resistance (hybrid). When the lever is moved, it will then lock out the diesel engine thereby being electric only. Thanks for your kind words about my models. I'm glad you like this one too.- 25 replies

[MOC] Hybrid Garbage Truck
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Alright, I am starting to see the light at the end of this tunnel. I have finished the truck chassis Studio file. All the steps are in, and the chassis and cab are final. Actually, I'm not sure I like the wheel hubs, but that's not a big issue right now. The rear body is final, so I'm working on the Studio file for that, and it's about 20% done. Conceptually, the rear hopper was done, but I finally spent some time making sure everything functions well and is fully braced. I found some issues, but nothing major at this time. One issue was that I did not spend any time on the bin lift, which took some tinkering. I finally got a mechanism that I liked, then three drafts to get the looks to where I want, and then testing on the back of the truck. Below lifts and tilts the bin/dumpster. I decided not to use a worm gear mechanism to lift the bin as this made the rear a lot more ugly, and was a little less strong. Also, since so much is hanging off the rear hopper opening pivot, I wanted to keep some simplicity when I could. Thus, the bin lift is controlled by a knob on the side. With this finalized, I then went back to the hopper to make sure everything is braced and works smoothly. The rear bin lift build is making the hopper sag a little bit, and I don't have nice way to mount the top of the bin lift, so that's this weeks project. But I felt good enough on where things stand to start the Studio file for the rear hopper. Above is the build as of today. Everything still works for 1x1 round plates, so I'm getting really close to being done. Now I just need to tie it all together, change the color errors, and finalize the two dumpsters, and then I'm done.- 25 replies

42154 - 2022 Ford GT
Thirdwigg replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hmm, I certainly am excited about any new suspension part, but it seems the application becomes very specific with the the joint part at both ends. It limits the use to only this suspension arm length. Again, I’m happy to be able to narrow an independent suspension width a little more, but it seems to be missing some flexibility. -
Well done again @HorcikDesigns.Your SUV are great, and have a perfect stance with just the right proportions. I really like the Lime version, and those 74mm tires work great here. As @rm8, mentioned, the body work is top notch. I specifically like the long 11x3 panels used as rocker panels on each side. Also, this SUV, as well as the EXP have a perfect gentle upward slope on the beltline with a gentle downward slope of the roof. This gives both cars a great look.

My kind of build! Small, manual and function dense. I love the little engine, and the steering is smooth and quick; just the way I like it. Also, I am becoming convinced that main functions are better with a HOG knob, so the HOG light for the dumping function is a great and playable design feature. Great job!

Just so I could go the full Mini 8110 with this MOC, I made a rear crane to attach to the back of the U423. Free instructions are at Rebrickable.com. Features Quick attachment lock Dual outriggers Boom lift Boom reach Boom extension Rear tires lifted. Full reach All folded up. And a little video to see it all work. I hope you all enjoy.

MOC PNEUMATIC KNUCKLE BOOM CRANE
Thirdwigg replied to DLTC's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great job on this attachment. The Unimog looks great, and as you say, an attachment for a MOG is always a good idea. A knuckleboom is always a great idea for a MOG, but often they look a little bulky for the scale. This one looks clean, so well done. I really like how you placed the pump, and the hose routing looks good. -
@MCD I've never heard the term "Studio Queen," but it's fantastic. I'll use that in the future. Great trucks as always.

[TC24] Plunder Runner
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks @HydroWorld Outlook, and I hope I am able to finish in time. I'm not sure about the propulsion system yet, as it depends on how the pods get placed. I'll get there. Nope, no other mechanical functions other than the landing gear and the pod lift are planned. -
I'm a little behind posting some of my trucks to this thread. U423 Rebrickable and Eurobricks Off Road Truck Rebrickable and Eurobricks

Nice hosework you have going so far. It's been fun to watch this project so far. -
[TC24] Plunder Runner
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A little update. I was able to complete draft 2, which has the landing gear working, the rear pod lift working, and a reasonable structure for the wings. The canopy might be a little too small, but I'll keep going and see what I think a little later. -
I usually have about 3-5 WIP MOCs going at a time. It seems to help me be able to move from one MOC to another depending on where motivation, creativity, and part access converge. I do generally only have one large WIP going at a time, as those take a little more focus. The rest are all smaller builds or build attachments (these 100-200 part builds are a great pallet cleanser for me). If something goes untouched for 6 months, I take a picture, and take it apart. This use to be hard for me, but now I think of it as a sunk cost, and take it apart with no emotion. I generally only use Studio when the final brick built version is done. Sometimes I will use it to try out a small idea or subbuild, but it takes too much time for me to try things out for a final build in Studio. Of note, I usually have about 10 completed MOCs built at a time. If I need parts for a WIP, I take one of these completed MOCs apart. But as I type this, I looking at both the Ionos and the U400, and it's going to take a lot for me to take those apart.

And now the chassis file is done. I'm not sure I like the wheel hubs, but I'll keep those loose for now.- 25 replies

I try to help my children understand that people are not fully bad or fully good, so the idea of theme around good police and bad robbers is a little hard for me, but I have wanted to build a spacecraft for a while. Like the Motorcycle Contest a couple of years ago (!) this one is a little out of my comfort zone, so I thought it would be good to participate. Also, space is a foundational LEGO theme, so I didn't want to miss out. Late winter/early spring is a little intense in the Thirdwigg household, so we'll see what I can complete. It does mean I'm keeping the build small and manual. I recently got set 40580, so Blacktron I is on my mind (and if I'm being honest, it's been on my mind almost non-stop since 1990), so this would be my design theme. Plus the all black with a little bit of yellow works well with a technic collection. Also, this means I have a transparent windscreen, which in my mind, and a requirement for a LEGO space ship. The Plunder Runner will be a small, fast, craft with a storage compartment for cargo, loot, or space police officers who are not quite above reproach. Call it the space robber side if you like, but I like to think it's not the space police side. I built a little draft to get the shape and proportions. Two HOG gears on the top would be for the landing gear and the Pod lift mechanism. After playing with some of the mechanisms and landing gear placement, the size would need to increase a little. Draft two is not much, but much more black. It was about this point, I figured out I needed to finalize the Pod size and shape. Studio was the best place to try some ideas. I think these will be final. The trick with Blacktron I is to have less yellow than you want, so we'll see if this is too much later in the build. Cargo Pod is on the left, and Cage Pod is on the right. Both open on the top. Like I said, it's a little busy in Thirdwiggville, so we'll see if this gets done on time....
