Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I think Legostone's advice is fairly sound. :) I would add a suggestion that you could try to curve the gundeck too, and thus try to create an overall curve that goes from bow to stern, on top of which you build the fore- and aftcastles. I would maintain the open gundeck for the waist of the ship (the middle) but build a large castle aft and a smaller fore, just like in the models LS has found. I like the length and shape of the beakhead (the build-up below the bowsprit) as it is now, and would suggest you build a platform like in the last model LS found. And if you can curve it upwards, even better. In fact, I think that model is really cool - and now I really want to build a carrack! -

Looks good to me, Stig. I will try to get some proper feedback in tonight, but just wanted to say you are not forgotten and that it looks promising! :) -
Challenge V - Princes of Garvey - RESULTS POSTED!
Bregir replied to Garmadon's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Well, Maxim, personally I would like people to be a bit more critical when commenting on my builds. Of course, it should always be constructive, and not all things to change, but it is nice to have something to work with. Many comments do tend to be focusing on mainly the things to praise. :) A useful tool for constructive commenting (for me) is to start out with something positive, then some suggestions for improvement, and lastly, some more positive. That helps avoid people being left with the impression that it was all bad, and that people only come to be critical. :) ( It is the same feedback system we used in the army, and it worked well there :) )- 164 replies

Challenge V - Princes of Garvey - RESULTS POSTED!
Bregir replied to Garmadon's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Just a quick comment on this (my personal opinion): Judging is already a time consuming effort, and while I would like the judges (me included) to aim at giving more feedback when judging, what I think we really need is a bit more of a culture of everyone taking their time to comment constructively on builds. I suppose that is why so many people write C&C welcome, eh Point is, those who do the judging are already putting in a lot of time, so finding the time for more in depth commenting might be difficult, especially if the responsibility is placed on only a few people. I would love for all of us to put a little more effort into our comments, at least for those who ask for feedback in their builds. That said, we are discussing how we (as judges) can give more feedback.- 164 replies

A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away [Collab with SoNE]
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I am inclined to agree with Maxim, but will take it up with leadership and get back to you. :) -
Results and decisions have to be clear, or clarified, so we all understand what has happened. Once that is achieved, everyone should accept them, regardless of whether they like the outcome. No reason to get worked up. :) Legostone asked a reasonable question, and should not have to explain himself. Kwatchi reacted, probably not because of the specific question, but because of the total picture, which could lead some to think that there are some who are not ready to accept the results if they go against them. The famous straw on the camel's back. You, Maxim, must (well, have already :) ) admit that you reacted to the first results in a not so reasonable way, and we can all take our lessons from that. For the future, let us all expect that everything is reasonable, and ask clarifying questions, rather than (which seems to be the case sometimes) initially expecting the world/the courts/Ska/Bregir/whoever to be trying to cheat us out of what is ours. The world might be unreasonable, but our objective is that BoBS shouldn't be. :) I guess that is where Kwatchi is coming from, and I do somewhat follow him. Then again, I also think he overreacted a bit. So, let's all get along, shall we? :)

A Quick Start Guide to Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS)

Royal New Terra Company (RNTC) - General Discussion
Bregir replied to Captain Genaro's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
You sir, are such a NEEEEEERD! And I am loving it! ;) Almost makes me want to ask what your fee would be for making a quarterly report for the ETTC! :P Also, you definitely need more titles. More titles means less room in letters for petitioners to bring up actual issues! Much better to have them spend space on the proper titles! ;)- 77 replies

New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
It goes up this way by design. We want to balance out the rich and the poor somewhat, and give a natural limit for active ships each MRCA. And more importantly, we want to make it a choice whether to send out ships or not. The levels may be adjusted, but not until we have tried this out. If you have a suggestion on how we can better achieve the same effects in an efficient, just, and automatable manner, feel free to ship me or someone else in leadership a pm, so we can take it up. For now, however, I suggest we go with what the Courts have decided, at least until the system has been tried out. Great ;) When I find the time, I will try to go through the ships posted so far, including yours. :) -

Previously.... The Curious Case of the Bottled Message - Bregir The Lost City of Gold, Part 1 - Ayrlego __________________________________________________________________ Part 1: Dr. Albert Brickingstone It was another brilliant day on Cascadia, and dr. Albert Brickingstone made his daily trip to wash his hands and face at one of the beautiful waterfalls outside the city, something that had long since turned into a ritual for him. This particular waterfall supplied an abundance of fresh, clear, and cool water, and was happily so insignificant that the Myzec had not attributed it to any of their terrible gods, feline, nor avian, which meant that no taboos surrounded it, allowing him to dib as he wanted. However, being outside the secret valley, they refused to allow him to go alone, no matter his assurances that he was perfectly able to fend for himself and that the felines were as afraid of him as he of they. Thus, he was today, as always, accompanied by one of the eagle guard. A strange people, he thought, staring into the water. Even after living neigh on 20 years amongst them, they still considered him as naive as a child, something triggered by his unwillingness (by the Myzec interpreted as inability) to accept the taboos of the lands. And while he had always adhered strictly to a principle of not interfering with the development of the native civilisation, his aid to the sick and hurt had not gone unnoticed, and neither had his suggestions for the agriculture of the Myzec. So while treating him like a naive child in ordinary matters, they also had a certain reverence for him, considering him at least a minor diety for agriculture and medicine. He was awarded every convenience they could spare, and access to anyone and everywhere he wished. It had been heaven for an anthropologist. Dr. Brickingstone splashed water upon his face and peaked at the guardsman and his ornamental avian helmet. The mythos of the Myzec was generally dualistic. The avians, headed by the eagle, represented order, wisdom, and peace, while the felines, ruled by the lion, were the gods of chaos, war, and instinct. But contrary to what one might believe, this did not result in a duality between god and evil. For the Myzec, wisdom and order could, just like chaos and war, represent something good, or something bad. Wisdom could be used for oppression of the unwise, while chaos could lead to progress, for instance. It was a highly fascinating culture. How he looked forward to sharing his findings with his peers. The Royal Society would be breathtaken! But wait? When would they arrive again? Had he given them word to come? It was all a bit hazy - Brickingstone rarely thought of going home - each day, he found a new aspect of the Mysec to study, and he had always thought Corrington would send a delegation some day. He had sent a bottled message, after all. Surely, it would reach the crown at some point, flowing with the western currents? Was it 20 years now? __________________________________________________________________ Part 2: At Camp Isaac It was late at night, and Lord Micah and Colonel Allcock had just arrived at Camp Isaac to link up with Montoya for an expedition inland. Only hours before, Montoya had recieved word from King's Harbour of a curious bottled message from a Dr. Albert Brickingstone. They were now all gathered around the large campfire in front of Montoya's tent, and he was just telling them of the anthropologist who dissappeared so many years ago. "...I remember one or two lectures at the university in Belson. A brilliant and engaging man, I must say, although entirely out of touch with the world outside anthropology. He could hardly handle himself in genteel company, it was said! Can you believe it? Such a brilliant man!" Lord Micah arched a brow and looked to Colonel Allcock, who was struggling to suppress a deep guttural laughter. Both of them had seen Montoya "entertain" a dinner company with the minute details of the intestants of a typhoid stricken orphan right through dessert, but thought it best not to mention it. Afterall, the story of a Corlander anthropolist living amongst natives inhabiting a large golden city did catch their attention. "I am amazed you should have had such news, Isaac. And just now - what a coincidence! I have myself a thing or two to add..." he said, before telling them of the strange offer presented to him by the Mardierian officer. Lord Micah nodded, deep in thought, before concluding: "Two independent sources talking of such a city? There must certainly be some credence to the claim! We must seek it out at utmost urgency- especially if the Eslandolans are on its trail." "But certainly, they would not dare set foot upon Corlander soil? To plunder riches from our lands?" Montoya exclaimed, still shocked by the rumours. "The Mardierians certainly think so... Let me bring the officer here to tell you himself..." Allcock said to general nodding, before venturing off to do so. They spoke and schemed deep into the night and as the sun started to rise, they prepared to break up for departure. "We shall leave by boat to find the great lake." Allcock said before ordering his men to see the boats provisioned. In the meanwhile, Montoya gave directions to young mr. Baker and the master sergeant of the Recon Pioneers, who would accompany him on the expedition in land, and Lord Micah left to gather his men. It would be a numeruos and diverse crew to set off towards the Golden City and Dr. Brickingstone, and should they find it, it would be a scientific sensation to rival the first Corlander settlements in the Prio Seas.... Part 3: (Unfortunately, RL prevented me from having my unlimited build ready in time - it will be added soon (tm) with more to the story of the Golden City. I find these builds a bit "meh" but at least they serve to tell the story - sorry it all ended up being a bit rushed. My brother helped me out finishing these :) ) Continuing the story: The lost City of Gold - Ayrlego

New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Sir Stig has the right of - and that is what is meant to be the awesome part! You can customize your ships (almost) freely! No two ships will be the same! Wow, much customize! Regarding Sistershipping: Please hold on this issue. Apparantly, we (the courts) are not yet clear on this issue. We will seek to resolve our misunderstandings and disagreement and get back to you all with a ruling. -
New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Calm down, people. No one is asking you to design your ships yet, only to state which ships you have (to be refunded) and what class you think they fit into in the new scheme. (For peer-review) You will design the exact stats when you license the ship. Also, the new MRCA rules will come out when they are ready. I can't just pull them out of a hat. (Especially since they are not in my hat! ) Last, the stats do what they say. But, the range might be modified. Higher range stat will still mean a higher range, though! 10 studs shorter and less bulky (and with one deck less) seems like a good indicator that it needs to be of a lower class, don't you think? And for the record, sail plan is basicly irrelevant for what class a ship falls into. Only size matters! (No matter what you are told elsewhere ) -
New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I don't think we can do that yet. It really depends on how movement will be handled in the new MRCA (and how big the zones will be). It is possible that the range will be x + the range stat. (That is the last I heard) -
New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Each ship has a base upkeep. Each mrca, your base upkeep for all active vessels is added up. The first 100 dbs of base upkeep is free. The next 100 (from 101 to 200) is charged at 100 %, the next at 150 %, etc. It may seem complicated, but it really isn't! We've even supplied you with a simple calculator Also, Garm likes doing math with Crayons... Don't ask him for advice! I agree with Maxim and think she is fitting for a class 6. Compare her size (that is all that matters) to the class 5 and 6 archetypes. Class 7 is ships like the Margot and Bodi's large frigate, which are both considerably bulkier. (As always, though, I take no responsibility for my evaluations of the sizes of your and Garm's vessel, though! ) The pictures are broken in most of your original topics, Capt Wolf! Otherwise, I would have happily given my input, but now, all is see is "something.jpg". Would this be possible to fix? -
New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
If we get another vessel from the Bodi shipyard by making the Drakkar a class one, that is indeed what we will do! ;) -
New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Maxim: NPC nations are not hammered out yet, but expect them to be played a different way in era two. Legostone: I think everyone will pay the same upkeep, but we haven't discussed it yet. Will get back on this. -
New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I think your Drakkar could be a class two too, although it is on the small side. I would think such a vessel would have high maneuver stat, but low hull and firepower stats, for instance, considering her build. (Thes are just tips) Also, Legostone, I would definitely min/max my stats more than you seem to be doing - but that is more a personal preference :P I actually have no idea how the combat system will work, but I expect it to be balanced in regards to the different stats. (No one stat to rule them all) -
Kings Port Advertiser and Ship List (Vol 2, issue 3) MAY 617
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Maxim: I do not think this is the proper place and way of addressing this. Putting out names in public with something that could be considered accusations of gaming the system. For the future, please ask your leaders to take up such issues in court. I am certain Garmadon and/or Capt Wolf will happily do so for you, and ensure that it is discussed properly. I will take it up for now. In the meanwhile, I will copy this and suggest you edit your post. -
New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Re: Jacob. The standards are the reference mocs. Those are the archetypes, sizewise. I think that is fairly clear? Especially as we get more and more ships to help establish the baseline. If a ship is built heavier, it will be in a higher class than a ship of the same length that is very lightly built. I am pretty sure this will make sense over time. :) It really doesn't matter if it is a frigate as I said above. It was a slip of the tongue. But what size it is is all that matters. As far as I remember, the Royal Oak is somewhat larger than the Ironsides (reference moc for 5) and similar sized to the size 6 reference. If I am mistaken in that evaluation, I shall happily hear arguments. I will check up on it again when I have the time. :) Regarding quality, I think what KB is trying to say is that quality has to be up to par. If someone tries to stretch a sub-par build to get a higher rating, we will intervene. But otherwise, quality is irrelevant. We just expect people to put in an effort, not to tyr to game the system. -
New Ship Classes - The Transition
Bregir replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
We are still undecided on this issue. Will get back on this, hopefully before you start licensing these ships. I would say 4, 6 & 6. The Royal Oak is a typical example of a light frigate, hence a class 6. :) -
I remember that 300 in base upkeep equals exactly 300 in actual upkeep. More than 300 in base upkeep will be subject to a positive modifier (making it more expensive) and less than 300 will be subject to a negative modifier. And since upkeep is 25 %, a base upkeep of 300 translates into 1200 DBS worth of licenses. :)
