Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gideon replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Same here for the same reasons, and because of the nice yellow CMF heads. I have yet however almost not built anything with my fleshie elves yet... -
Very nice snow and ice landscaping! I especially like the water design, is it trans-clear on top of solid medium blue or is there some transparent blue involved? Agree with mrcp6d however that another color for the wagon top might have stood out a bit more.

Two very nice modules with a lot to like! The crenellations are quite unique, did you have those 2x4 curved slopes in a recent LUGBULK? I was very close to going to LW as well, but work and other real life responsibilities unfortunately forced me to decline my participation this year... I am however planning on going to Skaerbaek in the fall again, hope I see you there!

Book II Ch III Cat B: Infiltrating through the Necropolis

Thanks! It is bounced flash that I'm using, and my next step will actually be to get me a couple of umbrellas to be able to give me more freedom to control the light- 26 replies

Thanks! The jagged top of the builds is supposed to mean "rock continues here" but I realized too late that I should have done the same kind of surface also on the sides...- 26 replies

Book II Ch III Cat B: Infiltrating through the Necropolis
Gideon replied to Gideon's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks! Looking forward to getting some of the new masonry bricks in sand green then? I'm using Lightroom for developing my RAW files and basic corrections (which is the only thing I've done here). For editing like removing backgrounds I use GIMP, but I intend to switch to Photoshop Elements soon because GIMP is not very user-friendly in my experience (or precisely because of my limited experience? It's an extremely powerful tool but a bit too powerful for my casual use I suppose...)- 26 replies

Book II Ch III Cat B: Infiltrating through the Necropolis
Gideon replied to Gideon's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks for the feedback, I think it might be because I applied too much noise reduction to the picture (it was rescued from a very dark picture which I had to brighten up a bit, which also of course brightened up the noise that then felt like it had to be supressed when I was pixel peeping...) The lighting is my first attempt at shooting with the flash disconnected from my camera. I've borrowed a slave-capable flash now (and will buy one for myself soon). The light includes a tiny bit of light from the built in flash aimed straight at the build as well because it was needed to trigger the slave flash, but it was turned down to 1/100 so I think it should hardly be visible except maybe for some extra glare in the helmets.- 26 replies

Book II Challenge III Cat A: A Lapse in Faith

I like it a lot when builders are inspired by historical facts and reinterpreting them to fit in the fantasy world -
Managed to finish category A and B builds in time. Blessing of the Ancestors Infiltrating through the Necropolis
-
Infiltrating through the Necropolis A company of dwarves are infiltrating the drow tunnels through the catacombs of a vast dwarven necropolis, deep below ground in southern Mitgardia. That the necropolis is nowadays connected to tunnels of more evil origin is sadly all too apparent, since drow or orcish plunderers have recently sneaked in and broken up all the cover stones of the graves to plunder the riches of the entombed dwarves. To someone like these dwarven warriors who are venerating their ancestors, this is an atrocity that cannot be forgiven and strengthens their resolve to defeat the Drow. Please give me feedback on the photography and editing, I've been playing with my new camera and trying to learn Lightroom and might very well have overstretched a slider or three when developing the pictures (Credit to Teabox for inspiring the design of the alcoves)

Blessing of the Ancestors Among the dwarves of Historica, veneration of the ancestors is widespread and many statues of fallen heroes are placed in the great dwarven halls. It is common to seek the blessings of these heroes of old, usually through a ritual performed by a priest, before going into battle. The ancestors are given offerings of the best food imported from the surface. Since the food disappears shortly after the ritual is performed, it is a widespread belief that the spirits of the ancestors are returning to feast in their halls of old. Some dwarves weak of faith are however whispering that the priests are maybe looking a bit too well nourished during times of war…? Please give me feedback on the photography and editing, I've been playing with my new camera and trying to learn Lightroom and might very well have overstretched a slider or three when developing the pictures

Excellent build, I especially love those non-orthogonal parts of the castle It can't have been easy to make those crenellations matching the curve in the wall...? Your half-timbered design looks great as always. Btw, I'm humbled to have my build mentioned as inspiration since your builds have been among the greatest sources of inspiration for me

Awesome build in so many aspects My favorite part is the gently curved wall, I think the texturing is exactly the right amount and that you've done a great job making the transition to the ground smooth with the olive green curved slopes. Only nitpick is that the top of the wall is a bit plain compared to the rest of the texturing, and that the gaps are a bit too visible from this angle. For example putting the minifig with the shield a bit closer to the "edge" would have obscured the most visible gap. (Shooting the picture from a slightly lower angle would have helped as well, but that would of course not have shown the nice details further back...) UoP +1.

Wow! One of the best semi-frozen waterfalls I've seen in lego Excellent use of the different transparent blues together with the snow and bleys. I also like the carved faces a lot. -

Excellent concept and statue! My favorite part is however those small figures and the lore surrounding them, if I'd had a little bit more time I would have made some last-minute alterations to my cat A build to include that -

I've done several MOCs where the faces of all minfigs were not suitable for the scene, but as long as the build is designed to be shot in a way where parts of or the whole minifig face is not visible it's fine. The other side (literally) of the matter is how to compose and arrange minifigs when the head is dual-sided. I've had to reshoot a couple of things (most notably one of the closeups of the Streets of Barqa) when I realized that parts of the alternate face was visible from behind... -
Nice build! The closeup of the lady butchering the hen was my favorite here

HSS Craftsmen/Merchant Specialty: Dwarven Jewelry in Sionnach
Gideon replied to de Gothia's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very nice build, I like the overall shape of the build and especially that balcony overlooking the courtyard and the brick walls with the supports. Always great to see more of the dwarven culture(s) in Historica btw. (I realize I have far too few non-LotR dwarf parts...) The roofs might have needed some color variation/texturing but I don't know what color/parts that would have worked... (Aside from 98283 in sand green which is coming, yay!) -

Fun idea and well executed -
I'm not usually fond of begging for extensions, since we've had tons of time to plan these builds. In this case however, having the week until January 11th would mean the difference between hardly building anything and actually being able to get 2 or even 3 entries together

Bunratty Castle is such a wonderful place! My last weekend in Ireland after working in Dublin for a few months I went down there for a medieval banquet, great experience! But visiting the folk park and the castle itself was at least as good -
Lovely landscaping and overall feeling of the build! I really love those birch trees The bridge and the wagon are however a at tad too similar in color for my taste, making either one of those (or at least the fence) would have made the wagon pop out more imho.

That was bad news indeed, I hope you had more important photos (of your kids etc) safely backed up! I am a bit paranoid when it comes to backup, I keep both a backup on another drive at home and a backup on an external hard drive stored at a friends place (if my house would burn down). Anyway on topic, great to hear that you have more MOCs coming!
