Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Saberwing40k replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think the parts will be red, as those are injection molded parts. Also, I've seen some high res photos via Barry Bosman's (aka Barman) Flickr stream. One of them is of the box for 42070, and in the center of the box is a small label that reads "Switch should be facing down", which indicates to me that the box art is still very much work in progress. 42069 is the same way, a part on the hood is yellow in the box art, but black on the model. Also, 42068 has some minor differences to 42051. In 42068, the seat are blue, instead of white, and the wheels have covers that 42051 lacks. Finally, I've noticed something very interesting about 42069. In a picture of it, I spy a U joint going to the front track. This means that it has actual four wheel drive, about time. So, is this set a sleeper hit, or still too simple? Unlike 42070, I think it's too early to tell. Here are the pictures: 42070, and the lurking 42069: 42070-2 6x6 All Terrain Tow Truck by Barry Bosman, on Flickr 42070 box art: 42070-1 6x6 All Terrain Tow Truck by Barry Bosman, on Flickr Bear has an eyepatch. 42069 box art: 42069-1 Extreme Adventure Vehicle by Barry Bosman, on Flickr By the front left track, I spy the bottom of a shock absorber, meaning this model has both real and fake ones. Unlike 42038, it looks like the hubs will not be suited to mounting wheels, at least not right out of the box. 42068: 42068-2 Airport Rescue Vehicle by Barry Bosman, on Flickr 42068 box art: 42068-1 Airport Rescue Vehicle by Barry Bosman, on Flickr There we go, keep a look out, there might be new pieces lurking. Edit: I just found some pics on Promobricks, of 42069 with the doors open. All I can say is, wow: I fully did not expect the doors to open in that manner, with the butterfly upper segment, and a drop down lower segment ala 8466. I also see the 3x5 curved panel, behind the door. I also see a shock absorber, although I am not certain what kind. I think with the rim parts on either side of the shock, Lego is trying to evoke remote reservoir shocks, which would make sense for a vehicle of this kind. There is also a mystery gear lever, although what this does is not immediately clear. It looks offset to one side, so is it a gearbox? I dunno, I really want to see in the back. Things still don't quite add up, with the functionality of this set, but it might be a supercar in disguise. -

And good for you, but you're saying that nobody can complain about these sets. Just as you have every right to like the sets you do, I have every right to dislike the sets I do, and discuss it on the forums. Also, who here as said their opinions as statements of fact? I'm not one of them. Also, I don't think "But the kids will like it!" is any sort of justification for poor design. Putting more emphasis on playability, or other things, that's aiming at kids I can agree with. But if a set has compromised functionality, or slapped together design, there isn't an excuse for that. Also, why do people feel the need to defend Lego if somebody says "I don't like this." If I don't like a set, I won't pay my money for it, simple as that. It's not like Lego is a charity or anything. On the other hand, some people are a little bit out of touch with their expectations. -
Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Saberwing40k replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I for one don't believe that any complaints are unfair to Lego. When I complain, I am merely using my right as a consumer to give Lego feedback about their products. Now, granted there is some whining, but in this case, I find the complaints to be justified. There really wasn't much hype about 42070, and it's not just that it doesn't live up to the expectations of the fans. In my mind, 42070 doesn't live up to the other flagship sets. Lego has proven that they can do large, RC vehicles with correct suspension, fully RC functions, whether with individual motors, or a remote controlled gearbox, or sets that are fantastically complex, but not RC. But no, it awkwardly splits the difference. What's the point of having an RC model if the function selector has to be worked manually? Why not make it a fully manual model with all the complexity that entails? Why can't it have good suspension like 8110, or 9398, or 42043? Why can't it have a remote control gearbox to switch functions like 8043? These are not inflated expectations, these are precedents set by Lego themselves. And, I don't think it's up to Lego's flagship standards. 42069 is not that good either. It's kind of like that red pickup truck 42029, and with roughly the same functions. Ironically, I think 42069, as it is a tracked vehicle, would work better as an RC set than 42070. If that were the case, then both sets would be much better. Than, 42070 could have the complexity a flagship deserves, and 42069 would be RC, and more fun to use, since it doesn't have to be that complex anyway. As a closing though, where/what is 42067? If Lego canceled that set, why not just move all of the sets above it a number down? That would put minds at ease, and stuff. Or, maybe it's a super pack, of the sets needed to build the car chassis. -

#Geezeralert. Just kidding, well, that's a funny coincidence. Maybe you should get an original 1977 Technic set for yourself. Or, get a new one, and say it's Lego's birthday present to you. Anyway, the truck, contrary to what the Lego people say, is not full RC. If it were, it would be a bit less disappointing. Instead, you have two motors, one receiver, and you have to switch them manually. What's the point of making it RC if you have to manually switch functions with a manual gearbox? Also, I did some math, and the price should be about $230 USD. If it's not, there will be tables flipped. -

Well, ErikLeppen posted his work in progress topic for an improved version of 42064, so that spurred me to post this. Like he said, complaining is too easy, so rather than continue to do that, I made an improved version of 42065, to actually make it a Technic set. Going by what I know about the pricing, the set should retail for about $85 dollars. Going by Lego's pricing scheme of having the set cost as much as a regular set with the same part count, and then adding the price of the PF parts, I have about 400 parts to work with, which I did manage to do. And, in rebuilding, I made this into a set that would still be fun, but worth buying for a Technic fan. Now, this model does not keep much of the look, because of how radically different the drivetrain is. But the idea is there. Ultimate 42065 by Saberwing007, on Flickr The features of this thing include a subtractor, driven by an L motor, and steered by an M motor. This is a modification of @Sariel's longitudinal subtractor mechanism, and works quite well. The other feature is suspension, based on the 2L rubber damper piece. These are used more or less as really stiff rubber bands, and hold up well with a light model like this. Instructions for the model will be available soon, when Rebrickable approves them. As a note, the magenta pin with stud and the extension cable are not part of the build, and are only to substitute for the L motor's missing cable end.

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Saberwing40k replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't know if anyone has noticed this, but the tracked vehicle has rubber studs on the tracks, which were first introduced in the Nexo Knights line. All I can say is, the tracked vehicle should have been RC, and the crane truck should have been all manual. That would have made both sets better. Also, where is 42067? Why would Lego skip a number again? -
Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Saberwing40k replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
One thing that is slightly disappointing about 42070 is the color. Now, I'm a fan of variety, but it's difficult to mod a set if it uses a color that is uncommon, especially if said uncommon color is not used again.*cough*42039*cough* But, I'll reserve judgement until I see some actual pictures. I want to like this set, and I hope that Lego improves upon the prelim picture. Maybe we could have a nice, Bluetooth equipped receiver? I'm not holding out hope, but on the other hand, the box photo gives us nothing, confirmation or denial. Actually, the designers did confirm that 42056 is the first of a series, but what that means is unknown. Also, we pretty much got to toy fair before we had any information on 42056, and given how locked down Lego has been this year, they could totally have something in the works, but have it be secret. I've adopted a wait and see attitude at this point, and I think you should to. By the by, I have never seen any sales figures for individual Lego lines, let alone sets, so I don't think you're ever going to get that information. I think 42056 sold out several places shortly after being released, but I'm not sure what that indicates. -

So, Jim, did you get those tickets to the toy fair given away? Or is that not for the Nuremburg fair? Anyway, I think it starts on the 1st of Feb. which is 3 days from now, or Wednesday. I'm kind of curious, is there any news about who is going, so I know where to look? As in, which blogs are sending people? And then, after that, I think the New York toy fair starts on the 4th. Not much longer, although that's what was said before London. -

I'd say otherwise. One knockoff maker who shall go unnamed makes basically identical bootlegs, which could not be done from photos alone. (Well, prelims anyway.) Also, putting off photography for a week for something that is six months down the pipeline is not helpful. But, this discussion is academic. Lego has their reasons, and we don't know them. And, speculating reasons will not get us any info any faster. -

I've just checked, and have been sorely disappointed to find no information out of London Toy Fair, from any source. But, oh well, we've already had that discussion, no use beating that dead horse again. Now, the Nuremburg fair starts on Feb.1, so we may see some good stuff that day. I don't think Lego's press conference or whatever is going to be anything other than the standard reheated PR department junk most of those things are anyways. Why would Lego bother showing off new stuff there,if they didn't want anyone to see it at London? As an aside, my dad and I had a little discussion about the lack of information out of London. He thinks that Lego is doing it to punish a leaker, I think it's one of the license holders (probably Disney), who demanded the secrecy. Now, that may seem odd, but there have been some bootleg Lego Star Wars sets, and Disney is infamously protective of their IP. -
General Part Discussion
Saberwing40k replied to Polo-Freak's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Why would it be more logical to use a motor with high speed and low torque with external gear reduction? Also, that doesn't tell the whole story. Due to differences in motor size and construction, the buggy motors are far, far more powerful. And, as a matter of fact, any external gear reduction is less efficient than getting a motor with internal reduction, because than the motor can have metal shafts, differently designed gears, and lubrication to make it more efficient. You're presuming that, all things being equal, the internal motors of the 2838 and buggy motors are the same, when they most certainly are not. One of the reasons for this is the buggy motors draw a ton of current, which is why they can output so much power. I don't use the 2838 motors that often, due to the low torque and awkward case, but I do use them, mainly to make high speed mechanisms, like flywheels and gyroscopes. Then, having the high speed without the need for external gearing is more efficient.- 5,507 replies

I'd agree with the Claas, but the Volvo loader is older, and will be discontinued soon, and become expensive. But, if you already have RC parts, get the Claas.

If they're not letting anybody into the stand, we may well have something liscensed. I don't know if it's too early, but given how much nerd rage there was over the Porsche, maybe Lego wants to get that out of our minds. -

It looks as if you unintentionally borked your Ackerman setup. I have implemented a setup like this that uses angled links to get the correction. What you want with Ackerman correction is to have the inside wheel turn more than the outside wheel. Your setup means the outside wheel turns more than the inside one, which is not good. I'd reccomend you flipping your axle so that the steering links are behind the axle rather than in front.

With the slack in Lego parts, I don't think it's the toe in that is causing problems. I think you might be having a wheel hitting part of the chassis. Put the wheels back on, then steer to one extreme with the remote. Take the tire and try spinning it, and see if it hits the chassis anywhere. That should be it.

Also, 42070 does not look all that much like a Zetros truck. To me, it looks more like a 6x6 Unimog, albeit with a longer hood. I'd have to agree with the statements about the crane arm, but I've got another way to think about this. If the model is completely remote control, then the crane arm could not be extended manually, as it is remote control, and there is no real way to get 3 functions through a turntable. But, I'm hoping this pic is old, and the final model much better. @Jim You might want a notepad, here's what I want to know from the Toy Fair: How is it motorized? Is it a true 6x6? Are the red angle connectors on the front #3? Is there any equipment on the back? Underside shot? What's in the axles? -

I hate to break it to you, but this statement is hilariously wrong, but I can understand the confusion. Time for some education. Unimogs and other off road vehicles DO NOT have a joint in the middle of the chassis. The chassis is simply somewhat flexible, allowing for more suspension articulation. This can be seen even with pickups on terrain. There is a reason that the cab and bed on a pickup are seperate, and that is because the chassis does flex. As in this picture: As can be seen, the chassis is flexing, but there is no actual joint there. However, there are vehicles that do have a joint in the chassis, mainly articulated dump trucks and tractors. So, there you have it. This PSA brought to you by Saberwing40k. Back on topic, the truck has really weird headlights, which are badly intergrated into the front fenders/grill. -

Here's a link so people don't need to ask: https://i.redd.it/mcmhprht6x8y.jpg Links are okay, right? If not, I will have a sketch sometime in the future. Also, Siegfried Meyer, trucks like these aren't supposed to swivel in the middle. What we're seeing is either chassis flex or wonky airbrushing.
