42080 Forest Harvester
Lipko replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Um... Maybe the reason is that the L motor has much better interface than the M-motor*? I see no reason to use M motor unless the space is very tight and 1 stud matters. Or is the price difference between the M and the L so great that the usage of L motors is to be avoided if possible?** *An M motor can easily drive via 12/20 reduction two pumps with closed circuits and the safety valves engaging. The reason is that the pumps operated in opposite directions, so 2 pumps are really 1 pump providing system pressure and 1 pump sucking in air, which is not a significant load. I see no reason in this model to have more pumps. **edit: okay, the price is almost the double. Maybe Lego just wants to get rid of the M motor, which is indeed a bit out of the Technic system.- 313 replies

42083 - Bugatti Chiron
Lipko replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I, for one, will probably buy the because of the leak. I'm not an impulsive customer so I wouldn't buy it on the first day, and after that I couldn't buy it because of the shortage and evalated prices. And after a half-year waiting time to get better prices again, my excitement would be gone. Just as with the Porsche which I didn't buy. So the leak and the 1-2 weeks of thinking time will probably make buy this model. My English fails this morning, sorry. -

Interesting that the proportions seem very similar to Leviathan's MOC, yet there are more complains about the proportions his model that the TLG model... -

Nope. I love it too. Though I have to get used to the blue gear color. -

20T clutch gear. Also that rotational changeover thing. Parts we are waiting for decades, and will make pretty much all Lego supercars up to date obsolete... -
@agrof Luckily it's the opposite in my work. I'm not a leader and I have some freedom to work on projects that are not directly related to our usual tasks, but improves our processes greatly (something that's usually a thing that's never get done due to continuous fire fighting) and this project satisfies my creative needs. The biggest such project, if anyone interested, is a programming project of a test environment to prepare and perform automated test sequences for controlling analog and digital inputs and data acquisition, climate chamber controlling, automatic test evaluation, etc. A system that's capable to run long term (few weeks or months) fully automatic endurance tests and also single test sequences.

Your reasons are perfectly understandable, I think I'm in the same boat (my dark age started with not having time, but honestly I could make time if I really wanted). I don't know if my burning out would have been delayed if I had felt to be a little more successful. I guess my coming back to Lego (if there will be any) will be having kids or doing scale modeling with system bricks. Though I'm really tempted to get a Chiron, but I can't justify to spend that much on a 10-12 hour building experience (maybe I will buy it anyway and sell the set as used?)

Don't forget "Team Lego Is For Children", "Team Purist", "Team Why It's Not Frontpaged Yet", "Team Whatever Happened To All The Fun In The World", "Team HOF!!!!11''". Edit: appearently I'm in the "Team Drunk Post Without Actually Being Drunk"... I guess the main member of the "Team Let's Merge This Topic Into The Technic Pub Topic" will soon act.

Unless they want to be massacred by they angry mob, they will include one. I really hope that you are right and the model will look better in real life, but I still can't get over the protruding eyebrow. On the system vs Technic part topic: this model seems to be well balanced. It's hard to believe that the harvester comes from the same design team as the crane and the Chiron. -
Lets talk color vomit
Lipko replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm okay with color coding and also with color vomit in the internals (makes the chassis more interesting and exciting to me). But on the outside, please no unnecessary vomit. The forest harvester with its red parts all over the green place, is just makes it look like a toy for kids <6. And I guess Technic still isn't intended for that age group. -

Me neither. This looks a bit like a Neanderthal version of the Chiron. Well, the original car isn't a beauty either (IMHO) so -
42079 - Heavy Duty Forklift
Lipko replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm pretty sure now that there's no trick with the string, because we would see it running behind the boom. http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/szecs/random-stuff/42079_boom.lxf -

I guess because of the colors, but it looks like some kindergarten toy (kindergarten, 'cause you wouldn't buy such a thing for your own kid...). Macaroni? Are you from Finland?- 313 replies

42079 - Heavy Duty Forklift
Lipko replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
And I guess the string's end at the top is simply fixed by hitching its end stud-piece-thing between two 3L connectors. The other end at the fork frame is probably fixed by putting the stud into the frame's pinhole facing downwards. It's clearly visible that you can insert the string in after everything else and fix it with the 3L connector and 2x2L axles and restricting/securing it at the roller by the 5L axle. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here... -

I think there is only one stage. The moving boom section seems to be 2 studs out and the overall lift is not more than 4 studs. -
Technic 2018 Set Discussion
Lipko replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
In my opinion these sets look awful except for the crane. I'm really curious about the Chiron. -
42082 - Rough Terrain Crane
Lipko replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think it looks awesome. But one thing still puzzles me: how can the two linear actuators handle the weight of the boom. My telehandler's actuators struggled with a smaller boom.- 1,224 replies

Questions for LEGO Mindstorms Team
Lipko replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
General(ish) question(s) to the Lego company: Do you plan to adopt alternative employment forms in set design, such as home office, contract work etc? What is the reason it's not adopted? Will the IDEAS method to introduce fan-designed models be reviewed in some way? Now it's clear that the Technic theme has pretty much zero chance on IDEAS. -
Pneumatics will have a sticking effect after some standing time, especially if they are not high quality (and Lego pneumatics is not the best quality). No matter how do you run them in. We call this "Monday Morning effect" in the pneumatics company I work at. In case of Lego cylinders (plastic and rubber (?) in contact at the piston), this strong firs-operation-sticking effect can arise even after half an hour or so in steady state. So I don't think you can do much about this.

Where's your PRO tag? I love everything about this model. The looks, the performance, the building quality.

Attitudes and mindsets
Lipko replied to Bublehead's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yup, most of the comment on my windup insects/insectoids video is that crabs are not insects... Plus many of the comments for my telehandler is that the music sucks (which is jam recording of my own band by the way) -
Attitudes and mindsets
Lipko replied to Bublehead's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
To add to the discussion, there are people like me who think that they are good, they know the reasons why they think they're, yet they usually see awesome looking MOCs with tons of solutions that are against their wievs (illegal techniques, weak connections, unplayable/unreliable functions, wrong proportions, etc) praised to the heaven. These things feel a bit unfair and makes us feel underrated. I know it's not a healthy attitude, but I think at least I'm mature enough to stomach this feeling and I can refrain from commenting or only comment on the good things of the MOC. I guess there are builders who can't resist the feeling, and this frustration often targets non-members' MOCs or newcomers'. -
A MOC is never finished? Tell me a thing in life that's ever considered finished. For me the things that help me to stop: -the drive to publish a MOC -the speed of parts and solutions becoming obsolete (new parts every year), so it's a bit like an arms race. -probably a healty project approach to things (I can't express what I mean by this) Starting a new MOC is not really forcing me to finish the previous, there were occasions when 2 or even 3 MOCs were developed paralelly (I mean 1-2 MOCs were put on hold until another one was finished, say because of a contest), and there are always months of no work at all between projects.
