10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I consider the two in the Blacksmith to be 'Knights' more than standard guards. They have the better swords and weapons, and they wear actual armor like the new great helms and pauldrons. Regular guards make due with the old style conical helms and rounded-tip swords or spears.- 2,976 replies

I do like those dark helms, and I bought a bunch in bulk a couple years back. I mostly use them for my Fright Knight Guards and Skeletons. But it's hard to pick it above the Conical helm, which just way more iconic.

So tossing this out there to anyone who might know, but is this set a Lego exclusive thing, or do we know if we'll see other retailers with these 90th anniversary sets?- 2,976 replies

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I still have a lot of sets unbuilt as well, namely the Flower Fruit Mountain. Forest Hideout was a fun build, though I have a few gripes about its size and spacing where you can't really fit a mini to show off in the building. I guess builds were like that back then, and meant to be displayed in Dollhouse form. I didn't expect it to be that small, but I really enjoyed the build and look of it as a display piece. I built this little peasant cottage MOC in the meantime, waiting for LKC to drop. I wanted a little farmhouse to go along with a giant castle for better scale, something like the Farms in the Warcraft games- 2,976 replies

The new Pauldrons from Blacksmith and Ninjago Skull Sorcerer sets are really cool additions to the line, and I really hope to see more like that in the future. Even though the classic Breastplate is my favourite piece, I like that the new armor types show all the detailed body prints of the mini. I tend to use very generic or non-Castle torsos for my Armored Knights since the armor covers the entire body. That way I save all the best Castle torso prints for display.

Ha, I just realized I voted for the wrong visor. The pointed one is the best.

[MOC] The Wandering Dragon Slayer Knight
Triceron replied to Bob De Quatre's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Very cool! I love the build, great use of those dino parts and the Fantastic Beasts creature head so it's not completely brickbuilt. -
Hmm, I agree with this too. There is an element of 'I think I can one-plus this' that has me not putting this up as best castle spot, even if it may be more technically and practically impressive than all previous Castle sets. At an impression level, I can look at something like Black Monarch's or Royal King's castle, and see them as perfect display pieces at it is. When I see Lion Knight's Castle, all that goes through in my mind is how I'd modify it to suit my personal tastes. I'll say I feel a similar way about the Medieval Castle 3-in-1, where I see it as a cool looking castle, but it's more MOC potential than what I consider a solid standalone set. But of course, I may feel differently once I've built it in person. I had mixed first impressions with the Medieval Blacksmith, but after having and building it it's become one of my favourite display sets.

I don't really have much interest in Pirates, but there are some real good accessories in there that would work with Castle. So the 4th it is! I'll probably pick up Heavenly Realms for this and another Forest Hideout set.- 2,976 replies

I voted Black Monarch's as best castle of all time. I think of it as a full package, and the Black Monarch's Castle is a much more solid Castle set that has very few drawbacks whereas the Lion Knight's Castle is a very impressive collection of Castle's history, but has little quirks like missing prints on the Wizard and the higher price point. As a rough comparison, I consider Barracuda Bay to be the ideal size and focus, where it may have fewer parts and minis but everything is solid with little to complain about.

This was my top pick. It's my favourite design of a castle, and came with so many minis. It's my white whale. Yeah, the entire CMF series started when I was well into my Dark Ages, so I didn't really know or care about them until well after the Ninjago movie was out I lucked out a couple years back when someone was selling their minis to get some money to start their Mandalorian collection, so I got a bunch of the Wizards and Dwarves and Goblins for a good price. I just picked up a Barbarian last weekend for regular price, and I'm pretty happy I even found it.

Same, I just checked and one of my shields is like that. I'm not sure which it would be, but my guess would be it's from the Dark Forest Hemlock Stronghold since it's equipped on the mini from that set. I have another Dark Forest set's shield, Bandit Ambush, and that one is fine. I also have an original Forestmen shield from the Castle Mini pack which is fine too.

Could be a currency thing. It's $500 CAD here in Canada, though I try to stick to $400 price tag for the sake of everyone else here- 2,976 replies

So Icons has less of a budget for new molds? Well as long as they still have a budget for new prints, I think that's the more important thing to me. Like if they do a new Wolfpack or Black Knights set, I wouldn't really expect any brand new parts as much as new prints or updated use of current/modern parts like new hoods, visors and weapons that weren't used back in the 90's. -
Ah, that makes sense now. I recently bought a mini from a facebook seller, and he had a mix of knockoffs and authentic minifigs on his listings. I asked about the knockoffs and he told me they're pretty much the exact same without the logo, and that he had a 'supplier' for em. And he seemed to have knockoffs of only the minifigs up to around series 17-8 if I recalled, so now this information makes a lot more sense.

Oh wow. So when did they make the change? Does that mean many of the earlier CMF series are of questionable quality compared to what we have now?
-
Wait, they weren't inhouse before?

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
Triceron replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Yeah, I can't see this set going away any time soon. And I doubt it will sell out considering the hefty price tag and the niche audience being targetted. It will sell big, don't get me wrong, but there are only so many people that have $400+ to spare on a set like this. I mean, I'm highly anticipating this set, and I'm waiting for Black Friday 2023 before I even consider grabbing this.- 2,976 replies

From what I'm aware, it's a rebranding of Creator Expert, which expands to both Liscenced and Unliscenced material. And its intent seems to be aimed at anything and everything AFOL. Since it's a rebranding for all things 18+, I think new retro Castle sets would fit best here. The 90th Anniversary Castle set and Forest Hideout GWP are already labeled 18+. That's really where Classic Castle fits in the grand scheme of things, as an AFOL targeted brand. -

I think the rebranding of Icons helps bringing back classic Castle, Pirates and Space immensely. Ideas is a great avenue, and Creator was a nice stop-gap, but having Icons will help push Castle products into AFOL territory without requiring a theme or having to fit the mold of Creator or an Ideas derivative. -

Technicalities are technicalities. How an official source considers it does not equate to how the fans will. "Han shot first" is a grand example of that. Nexo Knights is enough of an outlier to consider them part of Castle's history, but not of the Classic/Historic Castle lineup which we're all here for. Anything else is splitting hairs really, because we're not really here to talk about how Nexo Knights is integrated into Castle. Like all the non-castle sets in this thread, we're just looking at these themes as a source of parts to use.
