42128 - Heavy-Duty Tow Truck
1974 replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
TLG models have a metric ton of constraints. I'd love to see examples of MOCs that are better than TLG's sets given the same framework I'm oldschool, you bet I build a spaceship bigger and badder than 928 in the 80's, but would that ever been a set? Today, I have much more parts and build even bigger/better MOCs but they also would never be a set TLG gives us sets ... and more impotantly parts. We can MOC. We're adults. We have Bricklink etc When giving critique of official sets we tend forget that, I think -
They're both Unimogs and very well made sets. It would be VERY hard to make them better and not just re-skin them studless I do very much dislike the steering wheel under the roof on 8848 and I'm happy that TLG dropped that idea in future sets

Also screw those "mini" engines, I want a proper L6! They do, but mostly when they introduce parts (mostly electrical/pneumatic) that AFOLs don't have allready -

I'd be VERY surprised if this has any suspension, it's not a feature like on the Acros (and the looks on that suffered from it) -
I think there's only way to make the hull and that is with bricks. If the hull is plate based there's going to be a LOT of tiles since there are only one large tile without studs (6x6) and there's not really any rivets visible so those 6x12 tiles with studs are no good here. Using tiles/plates will also need a ton of internal structure. And be fragile as heck But making a brick hull will also take a ton of bricks ... hmm I don't expect any interior as unless it's 3 meters long

The original had a decorative engine, I wouldn't really call it "fake" as a fake engine in this forum seems to apply to something with moving pistons and not an electrical motor Also, if this set was released today it would be a Creator vehicle and thus not include a fake engine with moving pistons Model Team shares much more with current Creator sets than Technic sets. I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to lump these two themes into one forum just because some AFOLs collect both

Why all the hate for Legends of Chima?

They got high with super powers when they "absorbed" it (ie eating/injecting) and they cooked it better than Heisenberg With all due respect that IS what most drugs are about -

Nice MOC, but I fail to see the Futuron connection? -

First one, but move them one stud inwards. Also, loose the gear for the steering wheel. Yes, on it's the original but when I got my first pulley in 1980 that was one of the first things I replaced There is room for a 4L engine, no? Also, needs the exhaust stack and the single rear light -

No, they are not Look at the arrows It's based on a flywheel, most likely the same as used in the Chima Speedors. Gotta get that mould repaid- 5,507 replies

[TC20] 8462 Redux
1974 replied to Cardboy's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
While the set looks somewhat odd in a retro futuristic way (would fit well into the Bladerunner world), all the functions works rather well. It's a very well designed set in that regard -

I'm sure they also look at your SoMe presence and that can indeed be a dealbreaker also (not talking about you Sariel!) Denmark is an expensive country yes, but we get a LOT back through our taxes. Also, being so close to Billund LEGO is very cheap here ... hold on.. lemme just check .. No, it's not It's actually frightfully expensive Lastly, many people who work for TLG do not actually live in Billund. It's a rather small town but there are other much nicer places quite nearby in this tiny country While the pay is not astronomical, the benefits are and Denmark is a very good place to raise a family Cheers, Ole

If the last axle is steerable it would mean a lot of skidding on the second axle. I don't think these types of american trucks with triple rear axles have that option. European trucks this size often have dual wheels both in front and back with both front pairs steerable. Don't think I've ever seen a truck here with a single pair of front wheels and triple rear wheels Eidt : I've seen massive australian trucks for coal hauling trains, how are those configured? -

They are mostly driven, some two axle trucks have that lift option as well -

Yes, I've seen the sticker. Just trying to add a bit more info/speculation Didn't look closely at the hood, but I don't see any reason for NOT putting in two diffs, a drivetrain and a mighty V8. should be room enough, no? -

Then it would have to be rather deep, no? The first back axle does not have the same type of axle in the wheel so it's probably not connected to a dif. It's definitely possible to lift the axle as it sits a tad higher than the other two. hope the other wheels are diff'ed and connected to a proper engine There shoudle have been a half pin with a trans-yellow/orange round 1x1 plate on the front fender and more on the orange panels on the side. These type of american trucks seem to be a right lightshow The top lightbar also looks a bit small Nice model for sure -
Gather all the parts and ONLY the parts used in those sets and try building it yourself, it's really not that hard It's quite possible that you will not be able to make the innards exactly like the designer(s) did, but does it matter? The outside looks is fairly easy to replicate That's what we did, as kids, back in 80's when those sets were launched

You can't take those apart if it's the same glue as used in LEGOland parks. Just keep them as they are I do find it wierd that TLG gifted glued SF trains to their staff?
