The future of Back to the Future
1980-Something-Space-Guy replied to 1980-Something-Space-Guy's topic in LEGO Licensed
Dang, you are right. I completely forgot about the Brickheadz. Funny how you are the first person to mention them in this thread. There is an interesting pattern for sure. Your insights give me hope as to how Lego recognizes that BTTF is still part of pop culture, with opportunities for sales for them. Maybe I am somewhat pessimistic, but I think that asides from the time train and DeLorean, the franchise doesn't have as much potential for sets. The best options I can think of are builds from 1885 Hill Valley and maybe Cafe 80s. Minifigure-wise, though, there is a lot of untapped potential. Probably the most potential for BTTF would be a UCS-style DeLorean that can be changed between all 4 versions. I would also really like one that you could put in front of a train to recreate Part III's climax. -

Interesting that we are getting an ordinary R2 minifig. If Lego wanted to change anything on an R2 minifig (a chrome head or a third leg), you'd think they do it for this set. -
Really like your DeLorean model! Thanks for sharing!

The future of Back to the Future

I agree that we need to temper our expectations regarding which, if any, minifigs we might get. Lego has previously unexplicably sold some large sets without minifigs (Bond's car and the Ghostbusters car), and they have also made some disappointing minifig selections in large sets. Hence why I am cautiously optimistic. Hopefully we'll get some more solid intel soon. -
From the looks of the video, it seems each figure was identified by its Bricklink ID (same with Fabio's). My best guess is they cross-reference against Bricklink, and only count official figures. You can find out more about minifigs.blog on their website: https://minifigs.blog/ I agree that it's plausible that there are collectors with larger collections of figures, but I guess it's a matter of who is willing to take the time and effort to document everything physically for the record. Plus, some of these collectors might be reluctant to go public with their collections. However, given that there exist around 13K unique minifigures, I would not expect many larger collections to exist. The people from the Minifigs for Life collection from the Beyond the Brick video I linked to a few posts above had 5,500 unique figures at the time of the video, but I think they had some unconventional figures that they counted. Still, it would seem they could plausibly contest this record.

Our usual leakers on Instagram claim there is a "possible" $130 DeLorean coming in September! Cautiously optimistic! If we do get a big DeLorean, I'd love it to have 2015 or 1885 Marty and Doc. -
The record has been broken, and currently stands at 5,544 unique figures. It's held by minifigs.blog on Instagram. https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/431349-largest-collection-of lego® minifigures

Oooof, this hurts to read, but you're probably right. Knowing Lego, they'll capitalize on the missing figure from the lineup if they do a '66 Batmobile. -

I think they look better than the old design. It seems to me plausible that we'll get a Galactus or Giant Man using that design one day. -
Monochrome Minifigures

Oh shoot didn't realize this! I think maybe his hands are white, but for the most part a GITD monochrome will now be possible! -
Monochrome Minifigures

So apparently newelementary on Instagram has spoken to people from Lego who claim that the transparent minifigs and some of the red prototypes are fake. Do you guys think this puts the matter to rest? Some people think that this is either a lie, but I doubt this. If not, it would imply that a third party has access to identical molds for minifigs, which would be concerning to say the least. -

I know I really liked the Joker as a kid. He's Batman's main antagonist. Not hard to imagine he'd be popular among kids. I don't think anyone will have statistics for ya, so anecdotal evidence is as far as you'll get. -

I'm not a fan of the band-aid on Punisher's head. Hope he has another expression. No big deal either way, though, since his head is probably easily replaceable. -

I'll be damned. This new model has some improvements over the old one. Can't afford the space or money to get this new version, though, but it's hella tempting. Also, that minifig R2 head looks a bit shinier than usual. Any chance it's not the usual metallic pearl color? -

Didn't Lego implement some queue system for last Black Friday? That might help with highly-anticipated releases.- 310 replies

At first, Cap seemed a tad too simple, but I think that's probably in part because the YouTube icon obscures part of his printing. I think Lego is doing a great job with these! -

Disappointing to hear they'll be using a minifig slot for AoU Cap. Pretty sure most of us have him already, and he's abundant on the aftermarket for those who don't. -

Oh yes, that's also true. Marvel's comic-based minifig selection is sorely lacking. -

As much as I am a sucker for Marvel, it would be disappointing to finally get Marvel CMFs and have them all focused on Disney Plus series instead of filling the many empty spots in the MCU lineup. But hey, a yearly Marvel CMF, one can dream... -

This was immediate thought as well. Love the new detailing. Maybe Lego should revisit the old armors.
