Opinions on LEGO Technic Theme
Jim replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
And this...absolutely. In the good old days, you didn't know any better. Maybe your neighbour kid had better skills, or more LEGO, so he produced better MOCs, but other than that, you had no clue what could be done with LEGO. Add Bricklink to the mix and the sky is the limit. I tend to repeat myself, but LEGO still is a toy produced by a company to make money. The fact that TLG listens to AFOLs is awesome, but at the end of the day...money counts. The reason TLG releases a crane every two or three years is that cranes sell. It's not more complicated than that. The reason that they create a car (8070, 42039, 42077, etc) is that cars sell. Kids love cars. Complaining that these cars aren't very complicated is futile. They are what they are, cars. Maybe I'm putting myself too much in a TLG employee position, but for me it's fairly easy to understand most of the decisions. That is actually a valid point about big models. The Porsche and Bugatti are virtually non-steerable, because of the weight. The suspension isn't working, partially because of the weight (more because the friction pins). So yeah, I think you are making a valid point. Have we reached the limits? -

Exactly this! LEGO Technic is designed for youngsters who will play with it for about five years or so. As AFOLs we see the same sets over and over. We only see incremental changes, applied to the same type of sets. In other words; we have seen it all. Which makes it hard to be (or stay) really really excited. Admittedly, I don't suffer from this as much as some of you do. In general, I do like the new sets, and I don't expect them to be perfect. LEGO still has it's limits. And frankly, TLG does a pretty good job improving parts for better solutions. All things considered I am still very happy with the product. -
[REVIEW] 42083 - Bugatti Chiron
Jim replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That’s a difficult matter. I usually tell something first, followed by a picture to show what I mean. So the picture is explaining the text, instead of the text explaining the picture. But I understand that it can be confusing. If more people feel this way, I can change it, but I have never had this comment. Thanks for the input though -
[REVIEW] 42083 - Bugatti Chiron

Those are mighty expensive parts in the US and UK Thanks. I need to take a look, because I am not sure what you mean Corrected, thanks!! Exactly the same for me! Thanks mate! I absolutely agree on the stickers on the doors. I remember having the same issue on my iPad a while ago. But the strange thing is that I don't use any unsupported components. I will look into it and hopefully find out why it isn't working. -

42082 - Rough Terrain Crane
Jim replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
But that is exactly my point; I don't see "so many minor pieces", other than pins etc, which are present in any set. I don't see an abundance of system pieces. Of course, there are some, but to say it's packed with it, nope. I see a big crane with a lot of Technic pieces, just like the BWE has a lot of Technic pieces. But I tell you what; when I do a review, I will focus on the "Too many pieces aspect". That might be an interesting aspect of the review.- 1,224 replies

I beg to differ. In my opinion these added parts make the model look better than using rims only. And I reckon TLG likes to present different solutions/looks for hubs than the same rim every time. So, I don’t think it’s meant “to increase the part count”. -

Indeed I did, which is very strange, because I even looked it up in my email, to make sure I had it right Thanks for pointing it out and thanks for kind words. -

Opinions on LEGO Technic Theme
Jim replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
There was some discussion about big sets in the Rough Terrain Crane topic, so I figured to bring the discussion about big sets here. Exactly. Lately I do hear a lot of complaints about sets being too big. For me there is no such thing as too big. I'm not saying bigger is better, but you don't see me complaining about 4000+ sets. I love a big set. Therefore, I was wondering why I see a lot of complaints. And basically, it can only mean one thing and that's the price. People aren't complaining about sets getting bigger (i.e. more parts), but they are complaining that sets are getting more expensive. At least, that is the most likely explanation. -
42082 - Rough Terrain Crane
Jim replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
While that might be true. Why do we want that? I really think the plates under the outriggers are a very cool detail. And like the 42069, kids will love the extra details like the tools and stuff. What is the actual problem? The higher price? I have heard those rumors too. Can tell ya in a bit (well, hopefully next week hehe)- 1,224 replies

[REVIEW] 42083 - Bugatti Chiron
Jim replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, can't disagree with you on that one. But it's kind of logical, since the front has the opening frunk and some looselyconnected subassemblies, comprising the hood etc. The back is a bunch of properly connected liftarms and panels. I don't think the front is fragile, but I definitely agree the back is solid as rock. -

Thanks for the kinds words rener. I would love to go back to the old days where the review was the actual first information people got, but unfortunately, these days are over. And of course, we had some issues with the logistics. Anyway, glad you still liked the write-up. And the oldies references. Oldies for the win hehe It would indeed be a shame to pass one this one. Even if the sets are not perfect, and they are expensive, I think they are still very worth collecting. -

Thanks. Some parts are not as elaborate as I wanted, but that was to be expected. To be honest; I don't really know how long it took to build it. I'd say around 9 hours or so. Not that long. At least I got it published before the other 4 sets arrive next week -

I forgot to link the media kits. I will do that later. And the videos aren't properly embedded. I will fix that right away. -
A wizard is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to, as do some reviews Sorry, this took so long, but here's my take on the 42083 - Bugatti Chiron.

I reckon/hope that they are driven by two separate axles, turning in a different direction. Otherwise the model would be working properly, in the video, right?- 1,224 replies
