German Toy Fair – LEGO To Increase Focus On AFOLs
Masked Mini replied to danth's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That is the same thing in the context of determining future investment and predicting ROI, revenue is market share. Arguably that makes the (number pulled out of my bulk bin) 0.0001% that AFOLs make up in the market , MUCH more attractive if all you need to do to generate 10% of total revenue is please that tiny minority. The problem is in how TLG approached that tiny minority with deep pockets. They are trying to treat us like the unwashed masses (joke) making up the other 90% of their revenue. We don't need necessarily need an AFOL fan service line to be in stock 10-15 deep in every store (big cost). They just need an actually modern, reliable way online storefront that will put those sets into AFOL hands. There is no reason why TLG couldn't have a presence here to pitch AFOL set ideas and then sling a few (ten) thousand of them through S@H or Bricklink. They could milk a lot more than 10% total revenue out of us with a different form of engagement that meets us where we live and coincidentally avoids some of the major costs of old fashioned mass market retail. Damn. You make an excellent point here. Adult Fan of Lego could very well mean vastly different things to us and TLG. To them it could mean any Adult with deep wallets who happens to buy, as you put it, a UCS priced set. And yes additional licensing allows TLG to draw in more of their "AFOL"s. But it would leave us AFOLs out in the cold. Once in the bag though you need to keep feeding them or they leave said bag. -
German Toy Fair – LEGO To Increase Focus On AFOLs
Masked Mini replied to danth's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Funny thing is.. You're both correct. I've seen people argue both points endlessly with much gusto, passion and no support. 10% ballpark from TLG is massively more than I personally would have figured. I buy a lot of lego but most of it is second hand or clearance. TLG basically gets very little of my lego budget directly (BAM, PAB, BNP). -
That was me. Your theory holds a reasonable amount of water. I'm still holding out for a resurgence of Classic Pirates. But I'm happy we're getting anything at all thrown our way. If this ship and the Pirate Bay sell well, it may push the beancounters at TLG to look into releasing a Pirate wave.

I wouldn't hold my breath for intricate plate or tile sails. The piece count would be outrageous. Furled brick/plate sails maybe or larger Technic bricks are most likely in my opinion.

There is an AMA going on at Bricklink. Go ask your questions of TLG's plans for Bricklink and tell them what you'd like to see happen. https://www.bricklink.com/v2/community/newsview.page?newsid=50 "We will update the LEGO FAQ on an ongoing basis with your most top-of-mind questions, until the closing of the AMA on 31st January 2020 at 9AM EST."

Pirate ship! Pirate SHIP! PIRATESHIP! PIRATESHIP!!1! Benjamin's PIRATESHIP! I bought that one just because it was Pirate-y. I haven't built it yet or even tried to rob bits and pieces. But if I want pirates to come back, I gotta buy what little pirates lego puts out. You can always replace them with home made sails. It would be awesome if TLG brought back cloth sails though, no doubt.

Why do Lego catalogs have no dioramas anymore?
Masked Mini replied to Medzomorak's topic in General LEGO Discussion
They could do both you know. Top two thirds of the centerfold - Diorama. Gives the ethos for the theme. The inspiration for the buyer. Bottom third - show the actual sets that make up the diorama in little boxes with set number and piece count. Maybe MSRP as well. You could move this onto the back side and have the centerfold act as a poster. I'll argue that the dioramas ARE the cause for our my nostalgia. I spent YEARS of my life looking at the catalogues and posters, dreaming of building the depicted world. IT is what drove me to continually ask for Lego sets. I needed the additional sets to build the world I saw teased in the catalogues. All that yearning left an imprint that I am now, as an adult, fulfilling. I absolutely did not have a good childhood that I yearn for as someone implied. I used lego as escapism and the help that TLG gave towards worldbuilding made the difference. I almost wore out the 6 cassettes of audio dramas they put out! -
Should LEGO Bring Back Raised Base Plates
Masked Mini replied to Lego David's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I had several as a kid and have more now. I'd like to see them come back. But I'd love it more if they came out with new styles that are complementary to the original raised baseplates and the original river and crater plates. -
Love it! That Castle is an inspiration! My suggestions concern the jousting area. The dividing rail is too low, it should be about to the bottom of the horses shoulder. You also added great texture elsewhere so you should add brown tracks on both sides. Horses really tear up turf at a gallop.

Bit of a necro bump (OP Dec 5th 2017). Also the OP hasn't visited eurobricks since april 2019 so prepare to wait awhile for a response. Best bet would be to try and reverse engineer it from the flickr and linked pages if you're really wanting to build it yourself. Really nice ship though! I always had a soft spot for SP I (since they go with my favorite space faction, Blacktron I).

Indentifying a Fake Piece From Bricklink Order
Masked Mini replied to StudWorks's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Most clones muff the color match. I can usually tell right off the bat that there is something wrong with a brick as soon as I pick up a handful. Then there is the feel and finish of the surface, shape of the stud, injection mold markings in odd/wrong places and ofcourse the lack of LEGO on every stud. I'll grant that some clone bricks actually slip by me on the initial sort BECAUSE of their raised lettering on the studs. But they are pretty obvious on the subsequent sort as they'll be mixed in only with like bricks and their other features really make them stand out. I used to not toss my clone bricks as I used to be more financially limited than currently. Now I purge religiously because I can literally afford to.- 10 replies

OH MAN!!! Thanks for that close up!!! I hope someone can get some high-res shots of those. I can't see enough detail to work out the bricks/ reverse the builds.

I have a question about Lego's IP usage.
Masked Mini replied to Changhyeon Kim's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I am Not a Lawyer. However, If you do not gain from the videos monetarily then fair use doctrine should apply. Even if you DO gain monetarily, TLG would have to become aware of your use of their IP and take steps. That would likely mean sending YouTube a DMCA take down notice, possibly demanding your monetization going to them and sending you a Cease and Desist letter. Depending on your content, channel size and views they may not even notice or care at all. How to solve? Don't use IP you did not create or received explicit permission to use from the IP rights holder. -

KORUIT Warhammer 40K Imperial Guard Minifigures
Masked Mini replied to CMI's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
No worries. Space Marines are the gateway drug to 40k. Most of the advertising and lore revolves around the Space Marine chapters. You really only run into the Guardsmen when you get bored of supermen in ironman suits and aren't interested in Chaos or Eldar. Some really good book series were published starring Guardsmen. I happen to really like the POV of a normal Joe trying to be a soldier and survive in a world of Space Marines and Titans. -
[MOC][LEGO Ideas] The Modular Knight's Castle
Masked Mini replied to klockizbroda's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I really like this one! Good feel and easy to expand with DIY wall sections. -
I'm honestly hoping for more color variants of the Hattori Hanzo bandana/bald head. There are two variants already out so with luck we'll get a few more re-colours. And frakking epaulettes! Bane of my existence trying to source enough epaulettes for my Soldiers. Bring back Blue, Red and Black epaulettes por favor. And Tan backpacks.

I like it! More *tron, more better! But "Technical" put me in mind of a Pickup truck or UTV with a rear (bed) weapon mount. Think Toyota Hilux with .50BMG on fixed tripod in the cargo bed. The build itself is pretty cool, need to replace the crane hook with magnets though. Get on it Lego!! We need an updated magnet system compatible with click hinges already!

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Masked Mini replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
So I've been occupied with work again (12hr days pay well but leave me drained by evening). But I raided a Mom+Pop toy store in Austin last weekend and got away clean with 17 brick built cannons worth of bricks and sundries. That put me up to 33 or 34 built, more than enough for both of the hulls I have laid up. I also snagged every single round 2x2 in brown and black I could find making the rounds (hue hue) of the Austin Lego sellers. Not nearly enough black to make a set of masts yet. Also picked up some more centerpieces and a set of the black and green hulls. In the meantime I've decided to start a Frigate build. After input from my Wife I will try to build it as a tribute to the Barracuda. No I generally do not finish any given project until I have at least a dozen more in the works. #procrasti-nation -
KORUIT Warhammer 40K Imperial Guard Minifigures
Masked Mini replied to CMI's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
I disagree completely. These are spot on for Guardsmen! I wish they'd do a Deathkorps of Krieg version. Could try to kitbash some with the WW2 minis floating around but it'd be great if I could get some with Koruits attention to detail and quality. Now if we were talking Space Marines then yes the whole fig would need to be scaled up atleast 45% to scale to minifigs. I bought 10 of these fine Guardsmen and will try to build them a Chimera or Rhino to bring the Light of the Emperor to the Heathens of the Star Wars sub-forum. Xeno loving scum that they are! DEUS VULT!
