That's a very cute little engine, although I suspect a few parts may not exist in the colours you've used. Would a minifig or two be able fit on the footplate?

Thank you both! I'd somewhat forgotten about this MOC, so it was nice to be reminded of it. I don't think I'd call it a particularly detailed model, because the main focus was on getting the functions to work realistically. Reading through the previous posts, I saw that 3 months ago I said I'd draw a diagram of the string set-up - so here it is! Red, Light Blue and Green are the three operating strings, spooled around various axles in the engine compartment, threaded around the boom and tied to their respective sections (denoted by the "x"). Two pieces of elastic help return the dipper and bucket - the dark blue band wrapped around the boom and dipper, and the lime green piece representing the bucket's hydraulic ram. Unfortunately, that last one was missing when I took the photos of this model, because it had snapped! It's possible to use the excavator without it, provided you only want to use the hook attachment rather than the bucket. I hope this clears a few things up. If you want to build the model, a reminder that the LDD file is available in the Bricksafe folder: https://bricksafe.com/pages/Collet22/road-rail-excavators

Stupendous work capturing some very tricky shapes from the prototype, well done! I love all the little details too. How fragile is she, and does she run well? It's a shame you can't post the video, it would look fantastic!

Despite my profile picture being a narrow gauge loco, I've never had much luck with Narrow Gauge experiments! I believe one of the most important factors is weight - keep it low to avoid becoming top-heavy and falling off in the sharp corners, and keep it over the driven axles. Don't tow the battery box as a dead weight on an unpowered wagon, get it to provide the adhesion! As for examples of working chassis, the two that usually come to mind are this one, by @mtrkustoms of these forums: And also this one, posted a while ago on Lego Ideas: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/e9819af7-c0ca-4e4c-8014-e84f298862e6 Whatever you do, keep us posted!

[MOC] DSB Litra MZ I & III (8-wide locomotives)
ColletArrow replied to dtomsen's topic in LEGO Train Tech
These are some jaw-droppingly beautifully modelled coaches, presented by some very clean renders! They look perfect with the loco, awesome work. -

Excellent digital models, you've managed to capture plenty of details and colours from the real thing. I especially like the windscreens, and the interior detail - is there any in the cabs? For the screenshots, I would recommend 1. turning on "outlines on bricks" in LDD's preferences menu, and 2. using LDD's built-in screenshot tool (keyboard shortcut ctrl+k) - it usually provides a sharper image, and takes away the background and base grid. Or even better, try Stud.io for beautiful renders - they just take longer to make! -
Excellent work! You've included some fantastic parts usage for all your greebles, and produced a very tidy, well-drained model. I too can't wait to see her in real bricks!

LNUR TFOLS -- A New Group for Teenage LEGO Train Fans in the U.K.

I would have loved to be a part of this - it sounds like an excellent idea, and and I can't wait to see what you will do. It's a shame I'm 3 years too old! -
I love the effort you always put into your backstories for your MOCs, it's always an interesting read. I wonder what running rights Lord Sinister has, and how that sits with the tightly-timetabled trains! And this engine. It's an unusual concept - the forward-raked firebox and high running boards definitely give it a WD Austerity vibe. And yet it's plausible the LNER might have tried it. Overall it fits your style perfectly, nice work.

I can't count the number of times I had to retrieve my jaw from below the desk whilst reading this... you've perfectly modelled every tiny little detail, from the smokebox hinges to the bogies. I love those windows and the curve of the running boards behind the bufferbeam - and the custom lining and stickers are the icing on the cake. I think this needs to be frontpaged! Absolutely stupendous work, well done!

This is an excellent idea, and you've executed it very well - I especially like that the base is still fairly thin, and the battery box is hidden within the scene. I'd love to see what other trains could be built in this scale.

Very nice work! Any trackside details are always a bonus, and I do like the tooth part for the signal hood even if it's not that noticeable from some angles. The equipment cabinet is another often-overlooked yet important feature of real-life railways. Semaphores are signals with mechanical moving arms. In British I'd call this type a Colour-Light signal, but I think searchlight works too.

[moc] Great Northern M-2 class 2-6-8-0
ColletArrow replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
As a Brit I quite like that 'bare-table-top' boiler, it looks quite tidy - unlike everything below the running boards... Anyway, I think you've done a marvellous job modelling this machine with (digital) LEGO bricks - as far as I can see, every 'untidy' little detail is perfectly presented, and I'm impressed you've even managed to get the LDD flex-tool to behave as well! Good work. -
The shaping and parts usage - especially the 2x6 cab windows sideways on for those gorgeous cab windows - on this model is fantastic. And it's topped off by your beautiful renders - I think you've outdone yourself this time, especially with the blue one. Excellent work all around, well done!

I enjoy seeing models of the less 'attractive' rolling stock such as PWay equipment, and this is no exception - I love all the little greebles all over the model. Can the rail wheels be lifted up for normal road travel?

[MOC] DSB Litra MZ I & III (8-wide locomotives)
ColletArrow replied to dtomsen's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I love the colours of the older version, I think it fits and emphasises your work on the shaping (especially around the cab) far more than the newer scheme. Excellent work! -
I've recently been logged out of the forum on my laptop. I'm unable to remember my password, and although the "forgot my password" link accepts my email address (it's definitely the same one I've registered with) it doesn't actually send me anything - not even to my spam folder. Strangely, it worked perfectly when the same thing happened at the beginning of the month. Any tips? (posted from mobile)

I agree with Thorsten - that's an awesome method to get those curved windows, and the detailing over the rest of the loco looks pretty spot on. And as always, I love your renderings and presentation of your digital models - it feels much better than existing in a white void! Good work all round!

I do love these details - the parts usage is certainly novel. Regarding parts visibility - black is always difficult, even in real life. However, it looks like you're using LDD, so there's an easy in-program fix: Go to "edit", then "preferences". In the dialogue box, tick "Outlines on bricks" (you'll need to restart the program for them to show up). I've reproduced the detail section you've shown earlier to demonstrate - it makes a big visual difference, especially to stacked bricks or plates. Do you plan to build anything (digitally or physically) to use these bogies?
-
I've seen those come up in my searches, but I'm slightly concerned they would have poorer max. voltage or running time. Are you happy with them? I've just spotted a pair on Amazon at a heavily discounted price, I might have to try them! And I figured, just wanted to take the opportunity to add more detail

[MOC] Drewry - CP1000 Shunter (with Powerfunctions)
ColletArrow replied to Sérgio's topic in LEGO Train Tech
This feels distinctly British Rail Class 04-ish... That's probably because these were UK-built by Drewry, who built both their own shunters for industrial use and export, as well as the basically indistinguishable BR Class 04s. Confusing. Anyway, I love the technic frame and the lift-off bodywork, and the positioning of the PF components is certainly novel. However, I'm concerned about it's stability - with much of the weight of the battery box behind the rear axle, this shunter might be doing rear-wheelies a lot of the time...
