Well done, I like it. Maybe you could use a black base instead of an orange one. I would also add the little exhaust to the top and the horns in front of the cabin. Other than that I think it looks pretty cool. I've never seen such an engine before.

I agree. I have two crossings because I used to build this track back when I only had my first 9V train as a kid: But now that I have more 9V track and new PF track, I just can't find a good use for them... I like them a lot but the 90° angles are very limiting. :/ too bad really.
-
I have 3x2m of space planned for the layout. In the screenshots above, the big loop is supposed to be built out of 9V track and the rest is a mix of PF and 9V where necessary to fill in gaps. I just don't find them appealing too much.

Hey guys, I've recently been trying hard to come up with a useful layout to use both my old 9V trains and my PF trains on the same layout. I just can't come up with anything that works and is interesting. Most of the time I end up with one loop and a dozen sidings and that would only allow me to run one train at once which is a bit boring. I have a decent amount of track (150+ pieces), both 9V and PF, but I just can't figure out something that I like. Here are a couple examples of some layouts I came up with: I don't really like either of them too much but I can't come up with anything better than these two. I'd like to know how you designed your layouts and how you go about designing new ones. I'd like to utilize as much of the track I have as possible. I've already looked at dozens of pictures online but most layouts are either too big or not interesting enough. Looking forward to seeing yours :)

Thanks for the feedback. Priority seems interesting. Just so I understand correctly, you mean something like giving passenger trains priority over freight trains so they can "overtake" a freight train at the next possible opportunity? I think that would look really cool if two trains are following each other and one overtakes the other at the next two track rail road. Thanks for the idea :)

I think this sums it up. I don't need a WiFi coffee machine, I don't need my washing machine to send a tweet when it's done washing and I don't see a point in controlling Lego trains via the web.

To start of, I myself am working on a fully realistic and fully automated Lego train management system. I'm looking forward to see what other people come up with. But then I have to say - without being offensive - that the IoT movement is a big pile of stinking garbage. Every unnecessary device that's hooked up to the internet is just a potential security risk - software & hardware wise - produces unnecessary internet traffic that nobody needs (yes, those few kilobytes a day that your stuff sends may not sound like much, but lets just think about how many washing machines and fridges people have and suddenly the traffic situation looks entirely different). What I'm saying is keep your trains out of the web. Other than that I'm very impressed with your app. Looks great and I love your lighting setup on the train! Will you also make it that the light colors change according to the direction of travel? In my personal setup I don't have any bi-directional trains, so I'm not too concerned to change colors according to direction of travel. But I'd be interested to hear how you would determine what way your train is actually going or how you define "forward". Anyway, keep up the good work!

Hey guys! As some of you know, I recently got back to Lego trains after 15 years of neglect. A close friend of mine thought it was a good idea to document my progress, thoughts and plans on a personal blog, so others would be able to one day build their own big layouts and see what I struggled with and how they can do it better. I'd like you guys to check it out and use this forum to comment on my posts and maybe give me suggestions (I love ideas) on things you would want to hear about or see of. This blog is entirely dedicated to my Lego trains project. So far there are 4 blog entries (The latest one is being uploaded right this moment). If you wish to comment on something, let me know which post you're referring to, so I know what the topic is. http://wafa-sadri.de/pages/blog.html Thanks for checking it out! //Edit: By the way, I try to post once a week, every Monday.

Ugh, I got really excited for a second.

Oh my! That Loco is so adorable! You gotta make instructions for it. Seems like the perfect 9V shunting locomotive. I'd love to build one!
-
I'm also back at it again after 15 years or so. I'm 23 and I just bought myself the blue Cargo Train and I love it! I still own 2 9V trains so those go well together. I really hope there's going to be new trains in 2017. I like the red Cargo Train they're offering right now, but I'm not a fan of the dual-cab engines so I'm going to pass on that. And I don't like the huge nose-pieces on the passenger train. Those pieces are otherwise completely useless and that's just not "Lego" enough for me. I'm hoping to see a new creator passenger train. Maybe something vintage, like a Santa Fe type thing or something iconic like an Orient Express... I'm gonna keep my hopes up :D

I love the purple/silver & yellow livery, but I think getting train window parts in purple should be a rather difficult task :D Thanks for all your ideas guys! Does anyone have an idea what windscreen would be best to build an MPI MPXpress engine?

First of, thanks for the replies so far, guys! I've never heard of Caltrain before but man their trains look great! So far I that's my favorite. I like the MPI MPXpress engine. Looks too European-Styled to me. I live in Germany so I get to see those euro-trains every single day (I ride the train to work). Thanks for the suggestion though. Well unfortunately I only have one of the bi-level bases, but yeah I'm definitely going to build a bi-level car out of the one I have available.

Hey Guys! I'm super delighted! A college of mine told me that he used to have a Lego train when he was a kid and he'd see what he could find. Turns out, he used to have an original Metro Liner - including a double deck carriage. Unfortunately, all that's left of the train are the bogies, the 9V motor and the base plates of the train. He sold them to me for 10€. Quite a bargain if you ask me. I'm going to convert my Santa Fe Engine into a 9V train (it was not powered at all before). I'm left with this: http://i.imgur.com/v6UwRij.jpg A completely stripped out Metro Liner base. Nothing more, nothing less. I really wished he still had the complete parts but oh well, can't have everything I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Now I'm looking for ideas to create a new train. I'm planning on making this one a power functions train. I currently have a Santa Fe Engine (conversion to 9V coming up) with one Santa Fe carriage, the complete blue cargo train (set 60052, I believe, with PF) and the blue Railway Express (also a 9V train). I've never really liked the look of the Railway Express' Engine. So stubby and weird. The majority of my trains have a north-american look, so I feel like going the same direction with this MOC train. So if you got an idea of something cool that would go along with my other trains, I'd be glad if you posted some pictures. This is going to be my first MOC train. Super excited for the opportunity.

Looks great! I would like to know what kind of current the motor draws under normal operating conditions. Would it be possible to add this information to the documentation?
-
Okay, that's great! Exactly what I wanted to hear. I guess you've got a new costumer then! Looking forward to get some of your servos once they're available and I got my layout ready :)
-
Sorry for the previous post, somehow the text got lost. Second try: Now I'm confused. So nControl is a routine for the servo? But then you say people who use their own hardware have to pay a subscription. What I would like to do is just to buy the motors, hook them up to my Arduino and have it control them. As I understand in that case I'd have to pay the subscription, because I'm using my own Arduino instead of your controller, right?
-
First of, great work you're doing! Love your quick responses and adaptations. I was planning on making some automated track switch motors for my own layout when I stumbled upon this. It's perfect for what I want to do with it except for one thing: I really highly dislike paid software subscriptions. I understand the work you're putting into this and I think the pricing is fair but I hate subscription based payment models and it's probably the reason I'm not going to buy your motors, even though I like them a lot. I don't quite understand why one need a subscription for controller software anyway. It's not like there's going to be a lot of software updates on something that moves a servo one way or the other. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Man this is amazing! I always wanted to see a narrow gauge tram going though Lego cities. this is perfect, love it.
-
That looks really nice! I wonder how that would look in DB livery (red). Good work!

Hmm I might give it a try but BlueBrick needs Mono if you try running it natively and that's just bad... I tried to get it to run but I had no luck. I might try running it over wine some time. If it work's I'll post a tutorial. Mono is just an awfully written software. //Edit: I did some tests and it looks like it's working with Wine. I'll try out a couple of things and maybe update this thread, since the steps are extremely similar //Edit2: By the way, Track Designer is also specifically made for Lego ;)

Getting back with my Lego trains after 10 years

As promised, here are some photos of our office train :D I can also post a short video of the train running if anyone is interested- 16 replies

For a small application like TD I think Wine is an absolute adequate solution. Since TD is extremely old, I highly doubt that there will be a native Mac version of it. Since being a hacker is my profession and I do things like this for a living, I wouldn't think this is a bad way of running TD. I find it quite nifty Thanks for your feedback Much appreciated
