I loved this when I saw it on Flickr, and I still love it here! The gold half-fences look great as lattice windows along the walls, and I love those minarets. Kaliphlin needs more of those, I think, and the dome is excellent. The round top completes the whole thing very nicely. The ground texture could use something a bit more, perhaps, but that is the only thing I can nitpick. Great work!

The Small Council Chamber of Khadira
Henjin_Quilones replied to Muakhah's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great story, and the small room is very effective for illustrating it. I actually kind of like the floor, so I would not be too harsh on that if I were you. I like the side-board with the snacks and drinks, and the tiled wall-top makes the whole thing look sharp and clean. It would look a bit better, I think, with taller walls, at least taller than the stuff on the top of the bookshelves, but you might have a shortage of tan pieces that prevented that. It still looks good, though, as is. -

Truth! Having two now changes things dramatically. Although since one is so new and small still she can be carried around for some casual one-armed building time, at least. -

Looks epic! Who knew that goblins could do keg stands? Perhaps the goblin party was the origin of our modern-day frat party... -

You could also consider the torso of March Harriet from the LEGO Batman CMF; with different arms and legs she could be quite serviceable as a fleshie medieval female torso of some kind. -
Book II, Challenge V, Category C: Historica United

Thanks, glad you like it! Thanks, Mpyromaxos! I hope to keep using the colors for the elvish kingdom of Hesperia. It's easy to miss stuff in long posts like this... Thanks, LJ! Hope you liked the presentation of Aymeri. Wow, thanks, ME! I am glad you like it. Anfauglir was there, but only his back was visible in the overview shot, and was not in the close ups due to his position. Here he is, safe and sound: Your praise is very encouraging to me, and I am happy to receive it. Raavage was a fun villain, and I finally have all of the pieces to make him. Perhaps he'll get resurrected by some necromancer in the future...- 29 replies

1. TitusV 2. Captain Braunsfeld 3. MiloNelsiano (For build quality and most of the story, I would love to include MKJoshA in here somewhere, but I hate his ending! I do NOT want the Desert King ruling Historica...)

You have some good minifig posing here as they battle it out in the dusty plain. The base could use some more detailing, though, and some connection to one of the four Guilds (as this is the Guilds of Historica) would improve the presentation (along with a plain, solid color background). Welcome to the Guilds, though, as you seem to be freshly joined! (I would recommend reading this to get yourself up to speed).

It looks good all put together, dathil! My one complaint is that the horse area is so comparatively plain, and meets the rest at a straight line. A more natural transition between the sections, as well as some detailing on the ground, would improve it. The ground detailing need not be merely tan, as you seem to be short on it, as you say, but just something to add a bit of color, or debris in a corner, or plants overgrowing it in one section. In fact, the path from the archery area joining up to the horse area, with a few pebbles from the path in the tan section, would have connected them more naturally and allowed you to have the detailing that that area deserves.

AoM: Ginnon Valley(Archery phase one)
Henjin_Quilones replied to dathil's topic in Guilds of Historica
The target is lovely, and the bales behind it complete the picture. The platform on the rocks is also nice. I think the rocks themselves could use a bit of work (something similar to your tower would have looked better) and the tree also could use some further detailing, as it looks incomplete as it is. I like how you left the corner open to put your tower there, though! -
Great forced perspective, Legofin! The log palisade and the tops of the pine trees as a mid-ground between the mountains in the background and the buildings in the foreground make the depth illusion work well. The photo is a bit dark, however, which is a bummer. The other thing I think needs some work is the texturing of the stone on the building on the left. There is something just a bit off about it to me, perhaps due to the three colors of stone with the different textures, all in such a small area. I find that in smaller areas, too many textures and colors detract from the wall's appearance, whereas in larger areas too few textures detract. Just a thought. The layout and the angles are great, and as I said, I love the illusion of depth that you have created, as it is one of the better forced perspective all-LEGO builds I have seen in that regard.

The microfig with the headdress is a fun detail, getting it in proper scale. The purple swirls are well-used, but overall, the build does seem a bit unfinished. I think the studs on the base are what cause me to feel that way about it. It is a great idea, and the sense of menacing power is well captured.

Looks very impressive, LJ! I particularly like all of the different types of columns you used in the different pavilions and buildings. Your cheese slope mosaics look good as always, and the layout, with all of the different angles (and curves) looks good, too. Like zoth33, I am a big fan of the trees in dark grey. My favorite detail, however, might be one of the smallest: the way you made your benches with 2x4 tiles and the horns. It is so simple, and so elegant! I will have to keep that one in mind and steal it for a later build of my own.

The texturing is amazing, SK! I will be stealing this for something else down the road, for sure. I love the way you did the round tower part, especially. The best part, though, is the way you did those arches; I will be stealing that, too (so thank you, LJ!). The one thing I do not like is the use of the black vents for door hinges, but beyond that, this is a very fun and innovative modular castle!

Looks great, LJ! I love how you used a simple 1xn plate border for the building, giving a studs-out texture without anything fancy. With all of the great inlay work you did, anything more would have been distracting. I love the sand green and gold walls. The only thing I am not sold on (besides the trans-blue water, as others have mentioned) are the peculiar rocks made from the triple-curved wedges, but perhaps they are part of the landscaping, as prayer pillars or something; they look unnatural as it is. The white curved low wall along the path by the spring is my favorite part, though. Overall, a tremendous small build for Kaliphlin!

Beyond your own critiques, en_zoo, I don't have much to add. I do like it, though, if that makes you feel better about it. One suggestion I have would be to include just one more step up of land closest to the viewer, and to put minifigs there to give it even more scale. Then we, the viewers, could be joining Laesonar and the others in viewing the desolation of the lake. As it stands, though, it looks good. I like the small village on the right.

AoM: Ginnon Valley(Tower phase one)
Henjin_Quilones replied to dathil's topic in Guilds of Historica
There's a lot to like about this little tower, from the nice SNOT rockwork of the base through the cedar shingles on the sides in medium dark flesh and the beautiful mounted deer head and rack of antlers made from a brown frog and minifig hands, all the way to the shingles of the roof. I have two small critiques: first, like others have said, photography; a clean background is essential to get rid of distractions. It does not need need to be fancy, a sheet of white posterboard, or even just some white printer paper taped together carefully, but the textured walls behind don't really work. Also, I would advise against taking pictures in full sun, as it makes them washed out and full of glare. In the shade is a better place for outdoor pictures. Second, while I love the medium dark flesh for the shingles, it does not really work for the crenelations, perhaps due to the visible brick print on the back. That being said, the tower itself is nicely constructed, and I love the lack of exposed studs! -
You are welcome to publish a file for Henjin Quilones, since I know you already started one for your category C build. A picture of Henjin is below (he's the one on the right, obviously; Galaria, an elf princess and another of my main characters, is on the left):

There were not as many Pie entries as I expected, so this did not take that long to put together. It is possible that I missed an entry or two, but I took all of the ones from the Minichallenge III thread as well as searched through the guild topic history back to August, and found only these. Hi Z, Would this help? I compiled a list of all of the Challenge V entries that I could find in the challenge thread, and even found a few that had never been posted there. Hopefully I did not miss any (if I did, let me know and I can add it). If I have another free period, I might try to do the same for the Pie Contest as well. Too bad I posted a bunch of them in the afternoon or evening of April 30th in the United States; though it was almost certainly May 1st somewhere in the world when I posted them... I do have at least two Joust builds cooking, though, but it remains to be seen how much time I will have to make them nice. My second child will be born any day now, so that factors in, too, as well as the end-of-the-semester grading of a middle/high school teacher.
