[Cor - FB1] Surveying the Land

Nice wigs dude! I want one! Oh, and the build is great too! -
Fantastic modelling. I really like these industrial type builds. Unglamorous but fascinating! Where would all those swanky ship's captains be without the sweat of these guys? Feeding the fishes, that's where. Perhaps you should build the outside yard next? Even more potential for fascinating unglamour (I made that word up)!

Well it can go into the starting thread if you wish, I made it a seperate thread to avoid cluttering the starting thread! Happy to take advice on this and general posting etiquette. And yes, it has been well answered, I am much clearer now. Thanks! -

Nice build, I especially liked the attention you gave to the interior detail. Not sure about mixing up yellow and flesh coloured mini figs though. -

This is a great little fort, just what is needed to give you a secure night's sleep in a strange land. The gate and roof are particularly clever, and there's loads going on in a small space. Did you make that wonderful tent yourself? I have no problem with the different wood colours, which I think is normal in a newly built structure, but I think a Spring tide or storm at sea might cause the residents to have wet boots! -

Thanks guys! Very useful advice and all sorted out now. Perhaps someone should change the published advice? It is near the top of the 'Rules' page under 'Freebuild': http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=118415 20160216_231049 by Chris Warburton Brown, on Flickr Above: Frederick Stephens accidentally becomes the first Westerner to witness The New Moon Ritual of Xaponteclan. Read the full story now! My first ever MOC! I was disappointed with how the photos came out, I would appreciate some tips.- 897 replies

This was supposed to be for Challenge 1A but I couldn't get the photos taken in time. It is my very first MOC! I am pleased with the build and the story but not with the photography. If anyone has any tips, I would love to improve for next time. 20160216_231049 by Chris Warburton Brown, on Flickr Above: Frederick Stephens accidentally becomes the first Westerner to witness the New Moon Ritual of Xaponteclan. Frederick Stephens was a young midshipman on the Corrian frigate HMS Antelope, and during the years of peace between Corrington, Oleon and Eslandola had been able to develop his sailing and navigational skills with little incident. However, all that changed when the Antelope was despatched to New Terra. A hurricane blew up, and the ship was driven miles of course before being smashed on the rocks of an undiscovered island. Two days later, Frederick awoke on an unknown beach, utterly and terrifyingly alone, the sole survivor of the wreck. He was able to keep himself alive on fruit and shellfish as he explored the island. After several weeks a new storm blew in, and in desperation he took shelter in an apparently abandoned tower not far inland. Cold, wet and exhausted he fell into a deep sleep. 20160216_232437 by Chris Warburton Brown, on Flickr Next morning Frederick was awakened by the sound of chanting. To his horror, he realised he was not alone. The tower was in fact The Moon Temple of Xaponteclan and it was not abandoned at all. Every lunar month, the Xaponteclan natives used the temple for their New Moon Ritual. The Xaponteclans believed that the new moon is an egg laid by the White Eagle Goddess (Manxagatlatl). The egg is guarded by the Celestial Fire Lion (Pormogolatlatl), and it rolls across the sky for 29 days before hatching, at which point the goddess lays a new egg. In order to ensure that this continues to happen, the Xaponteclans enacted this ritual at every new moon. In their ritual, the priestess dressed as the White Eagle Goddess throws a quartz egg down the steps of the temple to the priest dressed as the Celestial Fire Lion waiting below. It is vital that he cleanly catches the egg, something that requires great practice. 20160216_231014 by Chris Warburton Brown, on Flickr Frederick of course had no idea of the significance of this ritual in the life of the Xaponteclans, but simply watched in terror as it was enacted below him. Luckily the dim light and the overgrown state of the temple meant he was not seen and shortly after the priests had departed he was able to make his escape. One day he would write this story in his autobiographical best seller Incidents of Travel in New Terra. But that was a long way in the future, and for now he faces a long road home; we have not heard the last of Midshipman Frederick Stephens. (NB: The temple is a miniature version of Temple II at Tikal, Guatemala, dating from the 8th century AD. This temple featured as part of the rebel fighter base in the first Star Wars film. My wife visited it the year before we were married, but sadly I did not!)

Thanks for so many warm welcomes! I am now trying to post my first free build MOC. I believe I need to post the build in a new thread and then complete two registrations, one in the faction's freebuild thread and one on the monthly free build web form. The guidance says: 'The link to the freebuild thread and the webform will be in the first posts of your faction’s thread.' Where is this please?- 897 replies

Great build, made me laugh out loud! Very imaginative use of lego pieces to build this. I like that it doesn't look too classically perfect, its more like something from so called 'primitive' art, like the Easter Island statues.

This is amazing! You have set such a high bar here. After struggling (and failing) with the lighting for the photos of my first MOC last night, I am in awe of your photographic skills as much as your modellng ones. And thanks for your tips; if I am going to carry on with this new hobby, I may need to invest in a tripod!- 33 replies

I was wondering if there is any guidance on the passage of calendrical time in BoBS? Is there some kind of timeline of current events as they get MOC'ed? It says on the BoBS intro page that the year is 615, and that was written last year so if we are following real time it must now be 616, right? Maybe its 17th February 616? But then it presumably takes several months to sail to New Terra and nobody wants to wait for their sigfig to make that journey in real time, equally many of the bigger builds would take months of real time, so maybe the game is going faster than real time? Anyone got any ideas or guidance on this? And just so you don't think I'm a total dork, I don't mind what the answer is, I just want to keep my sigfig's adventures within the bounds of the space time continuum. I realise we're all here to have fun, not to create a perfectly realistic parrallel world!

Hi Stig and Bregir, thanks for the great advice. Stig, I wil try and write to my faction leader now though it is nearly my bed time - I have work in the morning! (Its 10.30 GMT here) . Bregir, I worked out the flickr thing eventually and found a good guide to it here on the site, I have not used Flickr before so had to start from scratch; all sorted now though . One of the reasons I wanted to join was because it seems such a supportive and non-trolling community; neither my Lego nor my photography skills will be winning me any prizes but I intened to have some fun!

Great build. I especially liked the battery, and the sliding loading mechanisms on the guns are genius. The use of ships' cannon will also make this easy to construct wherever land fall is made. Considering the limit on this challenge is 48x48, you have instead made brilliant use of a small number of pieces to great effect and interest. But i agree with MKJ that the helmets are a little out of place.- 12 replies

Hi, I am a brand new member who only discovered your site on Sunday night, quite by chance. I then raced to complete an entry for Challenge 1A but have missed the deadline. I finished the model in good time but have had some trouble working out how to upload the photos. Would it be possible for me to get special dispensation for a 24 hour entry extension? I don't think my model will set anyone's world on fire (and the photos aren't great!) but it would be nice to be included. Yes, I know I am cheeky to ask! Also, I have not submitted my introductory sigfig MOC yet so I'm not actually sure if I am allowed to enter challenges before that (my sigfig is uploaded with his biography but not the larger intro diorama). If I can't enter for either of these reasons, could someone please explain how to submit it as a free build? I read the registration instructions but didn't really get it, sorry I'm not very technicaly minded and have never used a site like this before. Many thanks and best wishes, Fuzzy

20160216_193620 by Chris Warburton Brown, on Flickr For the attention of Viscount Oxley. Most secret. Dated this 16th day of February in the 616th year After Empire Sir, I, John Hawksbrugh, wish to inform you of my return to Corrington after two years unfortunate absence in Oleon, and to offer you the use of my humble talents in whatever way you deem most fitting for furthering the interests of our Crown and our Nation. I hope you may remember me from our last meeting, albeit a brief one. I was born to humble parents in an obscure rural backwater, but by great fortune my boyhood talent for drawing came to the attention of that most gentle man and peerless architect Sir Christopher Finch, who found me an apprenticeship in his drawing office. I was a capable draughtsman, and rendered some small help to Sir Christopher on several grand building projects which he then had in hand. Upon completion of my apprenticeship, I decided to broaden my education by an architectural tour of Oleon, as Sir Christopher himself had undertaken in his youth. Hearing of this, you summoned me and requested I secretly take a 'tour' of some of the fortresses newly built on the frontiers of Oleon. This I did, and spent many happy summer days pretending to draw some old church or romantic ruin while really sketching a fortress close by. I successfully smuggled a number of my drawings back to Corrington, but to my great chagrin I was then discovered by an over-zealous customs officer and imprisoned. I was treated well enough in prison, and spent my days learning the Oleon language and drawing fantastical palaces combining the finest Oleon houses with the military and prison architecture I saw from my cell window. Then, by great providence, I was able to escape, and though I demonstrated some cunning and aplomb the stupidity of my guards was such that I cannot take over much credit to myself. (Forgive me, but I cannot trust the details of my escape to writing; rather I will wait until I meet with you or one of your officers and then all shall be told). Thankfully, I have now returned to the bosom of my native land, and, undaunted, wish to offer myself again to the service of my country. Whether through building, drawing, travelling or spying I care not, for all four bring me equal pleasure, but I hoped that my previous experience, and our existing contact, might convince you that I am well fitted for some adventure in the new lands now being discovered to the east. I await your reply with earnest trepidation. God save the Queen! I remain, sir, your most humble and obedient servant, John Hawksbrugh (NB: Any resemblance between the early career of John Hawksbrugh and those of two of Britain's finest 18th century architects is entirely deliberate)- 897 replies

Thanks Puvel, that is the solution! You need to be on your photstream and have the picture on public settings. If you are on Camera Roll, as I was, it doesn't work.

I agree with dr spock, neither my download or share buttons on flickr produce the options described in the tutorials. They offer only social media (for 'share') or a download to my own pc (for download). I have played with all the privacy settings to no avail; are tthere permissions settings I am missing? Or does the tutorial need up dating to cope with recent changes to flickr? Many thanks, Fuzzy Sorry, I meant I agree with Freddy Bricker. Perhaps dr spock can offer an entirely logical solution?
